The Slovak National Uprising was an armed insurrection launched on August 29, 1944 by 60,000 Slovak partisan forces and 18,000 additional partisans from over 30 countries against German Wehrmacht forces during World War II. The Slovak forces were eventually defeated by Nazi Germany on October 28, 1944, though guerrilla warfare continued until Soviet forces occupied Slovakia in 1945. The uprising is now commemorated every August at the Monument of Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, where celebrations include placing flowers at memorial sites, folk dancing and singing in town squares, and making campfires where people sing songs and play guitars.
