Iskra, d.d. are successfully managing urban traffic in
Ljubljana and other major cities in Slovenia for more than 50
years. We are following modern trends of urban traffic
automation and are implementing most contemporary
solutions, ready for future challenges. Our traffic controllers
MSKE are outdoor computers, combining engineer’s
knowledge and years of experiences. Fully modular hardware
and high-capacity state-of-the-art software of the
controllers are installed in stainless steel housing with
excellent mechanical and anticorrosion characteristics and
necessary ventilation to provide for reliable operation. Our
goal is not successful management of one intersection, but
current traffic flow in whole urban traffic system. We
successfully completed road traffic automation in Ljubljana
with more than 200 intersections and implemented more
than250trafficcontrollersinallmajorcitiesinSlovenia.

Roundabout Tomacevo is the first automated 4 lane turbo
roundabout in Slovenia. We adopted traffic light system to
on-time traffic flow of each lane. Traffic is supervised by 76
inductive loops, indicating traffic flow and possible
congestions to a traffic controller. That way the length of
green phase is adapted to a real situation. Roundabout is
managed by 44 three part traffic lights which are connected
to a traffic controller which is connected to Ljubljana Urban
Traffic Control Center. Different regimes are implemented in
roundabout management: time management, manual
management. All programs are fully adoptive during day
time, night time, weekends and holidays. The results were
shown on the first day, when we detected no congestions in

It is crucial for cities to monitor traffic and provide it’s flow in
all important junctions. To ensure efficient supervision and
control,Iskra,d.d.hasdevelopedUrbanTrafficControlCenter.
Computer is supervising traffic flow in all intersections and is
monitoring status of all traffic controllers, traffic lights and
other traffic systems, such as video monitoring, traffic count,
weather stations etc. On the base of received information
supervisor or software itself choose the perfect traffic regime
for time given. That way the result is not just current traffic
flow at all times, but also positive environmental effect,
accidents reducing, decreasing congestion phases and a lot
more. It is also managing emergency vehicles routes, helps
locate stolen vehicles and managing access control in the
very center of the city. Supervisors are monitoring all city
traffic systems by the video wall, which is connected to all

challenge. Level crossing operation is track and station
dependent. Level crossing was connected to station
interlocking and station operator desk assuring automatic
(by route) or manual operation. Relay interlocking control
devices are equipped with remote supervision system
enabling remote logging of level crossing operation
states. On 0.4 Fiprom project Iskra demonstrated qualitative
and rapid installation and commissioning where time from

Level crossing 41.4 Taklce was modified with additional
functions due to changes on the signaling rules and it lies on
the line section between stations Rogatec and Stranje and
local road LC 356070 Rogaška Slatina – Brezovec, and

equipment SpDrL30 and equipped with three barriers and
five road signals due to complicated road configuration and it
is operated automatically with track magnets and control
signals for loco driver or manually with additional ON/OFF
buttonsforlocodriver.
A special feature of this crossing is also that shunting of rail
vehicles sometimes takes place in the Rogaška Slatina train
station and in such cases these vehicles do not cross the rail-
road level crossing. To avoid unnecessary activation of level
crossing and disturbance to road traffic during shunting
maneuvers, the level crossing can be deactivated by pressing
a button in the telephone box located in the train stop. When
shunting maneuver is finished the level crossing protection
operation should be activated by pressing the button in the

upgrading the network by reducing the TDM capacity and increasing the Ethernet capacity, using the SDR
platform. Due to the poor coverage of rural areas the deployment of the microwave network was inavoidable
in order to enable the Mission's operations in the territory. The network has been used for voice and data
communicationamongregionaloffices,headquatersandmobilestations.

2005-2008
Completion
The electrical power segment is of strategic importance for Bulgaria. Until recently, Bulgaria was exporter of
power to the EU, and decided to build up a new power plant. Being located within an area where three power
networks are interconnected (the ex-Yugoslavian network, Eastern European Network of former Soviet Union
and the Turkish network) it imposed responsibility and gave an opportunity to Bulgaria to play an importnat role
in the EU. The scope of the project was to establish a redundant management center to take over the control in
caseofanaturaldisaster,warorotherunexpectedsituations.InordertoconnecttheDisasterRocoveryCenterto
thepowerplants,theyneededanewnetwork.Iskra’smicrowavesolutionhasbeenselectedasitprovidedarapid
deployment and was much more rezillient to natural disasters than optical solutions. During the 2008 gas crisis,
this network was used to manage the power plants remotely from Sofia in real time, reducing the great financial
losses significantly. The end users in this project are NEK, BulgarGaz, TPP Mini Maritza 2, NPP Kozlodui, Ministry
OfDefence,etc.ThenetworkinfrastructureisbasedonSparkWaveSDRmicrowaveradio.

University of Ljubljana is the biggest public university in Slovenia with over 50.000 students. Academic
environment requires special approach which public ISPs are not able to deliver with their commercial services.
That's why they decided for implementation of their own academic network, connected directly to the national
academic provider, Arnes. University has developed non-commercial services for 27 faculties which are
connected to this network. Implementation of 10G MPLS network started with the goal of virtualizing the
physical network. The core is built on fully redundant switches, with load balancing. The redundant links to public
networks are secured with IPS devices. The wireless part of the network enables pan-European connections to
anyEuropeanuniversity.
Iskra has been living with the Ljubljana University network for the last 15 years. In the latest network

Mercator is the biggest supermarket retail chain in the Balkans, and only in Slovenia it has over 17.000
employees. With centralization of the data centers, Mercator needed a reliable, redundant and high-speed
core network. Iskra Sistemi configured and implemented two redundant modular core switching systems.
Finishing the core phase, the project continued on the distribution level - by equiping over 1000 remote
locations in Slovenia with LAN networks. Iskra delivered, installed and configured the whole distribution
level of the national network. The new network provides a sound platform and a stable enviroment for the
newcardpaymentsystemofMercator.
Besides delivering the design and the equipment, Iskra also helped Mercator to carry out the project with

CBBH (Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina) network interconnects 42 commercial banks of three national
entities with three national bank centers in three main cities. Its function is Gyro Clearing among commercial
banks and Real Time Gross Settlement. The network has been designed and constructed in a fully redundant
way. Commercial banks are connected to their respective national bank centers by a primary and a secondary
connection with two different communications media. The national centers are connected in the same way with
the country's main banking node in Sarajevo. The equipment in Sarajevo is fully redundant so that there is no
single point of failure. In case that one of the national centers fails, the network is programmed to seamlessly

There were 42 nodes set up for the commercial banks, plus aggregation nodes in Sarajevo, Banja Luka and
Mostar. In 9 years of operation there was not a single failure of the network, though there have been outages of
individual operator lines, but the network automatically recovered every time. The network has been under a
