Smart Irrigation for
Sustainable Rural
Development
BMS ∆X TEAM – EVERY DROP
Preamble:
India is a tropical country and an agrarian society.
About 50% of the population depends directly or
indirectly on Agriculture.
South West Monsoon is the main source of
rainfall.
Monsoon is erratic both in space & time due to
climatic changes.
Kharif crops are rain fed whereas winter and
summer crops require irrigation.

Sprinkler Irrigation
Well Irrigation is common in South Karnataka and hence bore wells.
The farmers are forced to depend on diesel fuel operated
bore wells for irrigation due to scarcity of electricity.
The operational cost of diesel based irrigation and the
gradual reduction from the bore wells results in yield
reduction.
Local governments give electricity at a subsidy rate to
farmers.
Due to the scarcity of electricity, farmers get electricity
during night time for a limited time.

Objective:
To develop and deploy an automated process that takes
care of water requirements of a crop as and when the crop
demands (Right quantity at right time).
Water Requirements of crops
Water requirement of a crop is the total quantity of water
required by the crop from the time of sowing to time of
harvesting
Different crops require different depths of water.
Since the growing crops require water continuously, it is
essential to maintain the quantity of readily available
moisture in the soil by irrigation.
The quantity of water applied is such that it is sufficient to
meet the needs of the crops for a period between two
successive irrigations.
The frequency of the irrigation is very important.

Growth
Depth of Water Applied During Irrigation and
Frequency of Irrigation
During irrigation water is supplied such that the moisture
in the root zone is raised upto Field capacity.
After irrigation, the moisture depletes due to transpiration
and evaporation.
The total amount of water lost from the soil due to
evaporation and transpiration is termed as
Evapotranspiration or consumptive use.
The moisture content of the soil at any given point of time
should not fall below the readily available moisture.
When the moisture content reaches the lower limit of
readily available moisture, it should be replenished by
irrigation and raised to field capacity.

The minimum depth of water dw to be applied during irrigation is given by:
dw
= (ws/w)*d*(Field capacity – (Weight of moisture content held by soil at lower
limit of readily available moisture per unit weight of dry soil)
dw = (ws/w)*d*(Weight of readily available moisture per unit weight of dry soil)
dw = Depth of readily available moisture in the root
zone of the soil.
Frequency of irrigation depends on the amount of
readily available moisture in the root zone of the
soil and the rate of consumptive use.
Frequency = ((Depth of readily available moisture)/
rate of consumptive use) days.
Crop Seasons: Kharif & Rabi
Kharif – Monsoon Crops – April – September
Rabi- Winter Crops- October- March
Sugarcane is a perennial crop.

Smart Irrigation for Sustainable Development-22.pptx

  • 1. Smart Irrigation for Sustainable Rural Development BMS ∆X TEAM – EVERY DROP
  • 2. Preamble: India is a tropical country and an agrarian society. About 50% of the population depends directly or indirectly on Agriculture. South West Monsoon is the main source of rainfall. Monsoon is erratic both in space & time due to climatic changes. Kharif crops are rain fed whereas winter and summer crops require irrigation.
  • 3.
  • 6. Irrigation Scenario – Furrow Method of Irrigation
  • 7. Present Scenario – Furrow Method of Irrigation Present Scenario – Drip Irrigation
  • 11. Well Irrigation is common in South Karnataka and hence bore wells.
  • 12. The farmers are forced to depend on diesel fuel operated bore wells for irrigation due to scarcity of electricity.
  • 13. The operational cost of diesel based irrigation and the gradual reduction from the bore wells results in yield reduction.
  • 14. Local governments give electricity at a subsidy rate to farmers. Due to the scarcity of electricity, farmers get electricity during night time for a limited time.
  • 15. OMC (Optimum Moisture Content) Depth of Water Applied in cm Crop yield qn/ha Optimum yield Relation between yield Vs. depth of water applied
  • 17. Times of India- 3rd March 2014
  • 18. Present Method of cultivation
  • 19. Migration of farmers to urban areas looking for livelihood, creating urban slums.
  • 20. Objective: To develop and deploy an automated process that takes care of water requirements of a crop as and when the crop demands (Right quantity at right time).
  • 21. Water Requirements of crops Water requirement of a crop is the total quantity of water required by the crop from the time of sowing to time of harvesting Different crops require different depths of water. Since the growing crops require water continuously, it is essential to maintain the quantity of readily available moisture in the soil by irrigation. The quantity of water applied is such that it is sufficient to meet the needs of the crops for a period between two successive irrigations. The frequency of the irrigation is very important.
  • 22. Limiting Soil Moisture Conditions: Variation of crop growth Vs. Moisture content Optimum Crop Growth Optimum Moisture content Permanent Wilting Point Field Capacity Moisture content of the soil Rate of Crop Growth
  • 23. Depth of Water Applied During Irrigation and Frequency of Irrigation During irrigation water is supplied such that the moisture in the root zone is raised upto Field capacity. After irrigation, the moisture depletes due to transpiration and evaporation. The total amount of water lost from the soil due to evaporation and transpiration is termed as Evapotranspiration or consumptive use. The moisture content of the soil at any given point of time should not fall below the readily available moisture. When the moisture content reaches the lower limit of readily available moisture, it should be replenished by irrigation and raised to field capacity.
  • 24.
  • 25. Moisture content in soil Field Capacity Time Permanent Wilting Point Lower Limit of Readily Available Moisture Readily Available Moisture The minimum depth of water dw to be applied during irrigation is given by: dw = (ws/w)*d*(Field capacity – (Weight of moisture content held by soil at lower limit of readily available moisture per unit weight of dry soil) dw = (ws/w)*d*(Weight of readily available moisture per unit weight of dry soil)
  • 26. dw = Depth of readily available moisture in the root zone of the soil. Frequency of irrigation depends on the amount of readily available moisture in the root zone of the soil and the rate of consumptive use. Frequency = ((Depth of readily available moisture)/ rate of consumptive use) days. Crop Seasons: Kharif & Rabi Kharif – Monsoon Crops – April – September Rabi- Winter Crops- October- March Sugarcane is a perennial crop.
  • 30. Amount of water required by the crop at any time= f(FC-SM)*Root depth* bulk density of the soil. End of Flowering Day of Sowing Day of Harvesting Max. Root depth x Time in days Root Depth Model: (Ramaprasad et.al)
