Features and benefits
QuadraMed’s Smart Identity Exchange (Smart I/X) can:
n Identify and link patient records from disparate systems. Smart
I/X improves the accuracy of patient identification to support
patient care and health information exchange.
n Resolve duplicate patient records. The SmartMerge component,
which is included with Smart I/X, provides powerful workflow
tools to resolve identity issues.
n Improve Meaningful Use compliance. Better patient identification
and a clean MPI will provide a strong foundation for your
organization to meet objectives of Stage One of Meaningful Use.
n Reduce time updating or reviewing multiple MPI systems for
additional patient information. Smart I/X can be customized
to include additional data you’d like to analyze and collect.
n Improve patient safety. MPI data integrity errors create patient-
safety risks that may negatively impact operations.
n Increase physician confidence. An MPI database containing
multiple patient records for the same patient decreases
clinician confidence.
Increase the total value of your MPI systems. With add-on modules
and services, QuadraMed provides all of the tools needed to resolve
your toughest identity management challenges.
The value of Smart I/X
Patients often provide different personal information each time they
visit a healthcare facility. For example, a female patient may be in
your system as Liza Barton (as a child) and Elizabeth Hexom (as a
married adult). How do you ensure that your EMPI recognizes this
patient as the same person?
Ranked #1 in KLAS for six years, Smart I/X, a tool from QuadraMed’s
award-winning Smart Identity Management Solutions suite,

data isn’t an exact match. Smart I/X recognizes common nicknames, and,
based on a patient’s demographic information, it uses advanced probability
calculations to confirm a patient’s identity.
Smart I/X can be implemented without replacing existing technology,
whether your health system is linked to a health information exchange or
you’ve just purchased additional facilities with different MPI systems. Smart
I/X provides your organization with a seamless addition to your current
information systems, and it improves system performance with its focus
on one task: effectively managing patient identification.
Advanced matching capabilities
The high accuracy rate of QuadraMed’s Smart I/X is due to the probabilistic
matching algorithm it uses to analyze records. Through this algorithm,
Smart I/X performs a frequency analysis (i.e., the number of times the same
information appears in the database), which it uses to determine the relative
weight value of each data element as it reviews records and assigns unique
enterprise identifiers.
Smart I/X automatically values each data point based on the results of the
frequency analysis, so a match on a common name, such as John, would
likely have a low weight, while a match on a unique name, like Igor, would
have a high weight. Other vendors’ EMPI solutions often use nonprobabilistic
tools, meaning that personnel use their own judgment when assigning values
to data points—without the added benefit of a frequency analysis.
Easy correction with Smartmerge
To manage the correction of duplicate records, overlaps (cross-facility
matches), and overlaid record errors, Smart I/X includes the integration of
SmartMerge, a program that displays and categorizes data-integrity errors
and provides workflow tools to aid in the correction process.
With SmartMerge, you can view, analyze, mark, filter, and sort record
matches using custom-defined preferences and standards. You can also run
reports to quickly assess the status of all identity issues within the EMPI.
