2. Introduction
Social refers to the consumer or end-user level, where data is created and collected. Social media
gives businesses a way to reach a large number of consumers quickly and efficiently.
Mobile describes the shift to smartphone and tablet-driven computing. Mobile technologies
provide the diverse and roaming computing solution to both enterprise users and consumers.
Analytics speaks to the growing ability and need to interpret and understand data big and small.
Analytics makes broad usage of mathematics and statistics to transform raw information into
significant information which can help and support decision making process.
Cloud refers to the advent of virtual computing through untethered storage and access to data,
applications, services, and more. Cloud computing gives businesses an affordable and efficient
approach to evolve enterprise solutions.
SMAC – Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud – is a popular framework for optimizing
business performance through IT. The basic idea is that these four elements all play
key roles in generating value from data through capture, storage, and application.
3. Introduction
• Social media, mobile, analytics and cloud, as individual technologies have
been known to add a new element to business models. However, to exploit
these technologies to their fullest potential, a new mantra has been
formulated, using the combination of these technologies.
• SMAC, which is being touted as the ‘next big thing’ in the IT
industry, stands for social, mobile, analytics and cloud on one integrated
stack, where one function facilitates another for amplified impact.
• Social and mobility solutions are seen as effective drivers of productivity
and engagement, while business analytics and cloud-based applications are
enabling decision-making at optimal costs.
• In nearest future, these technologies will alter how organizations interact
with customers and one another to deliver quality products & services
while keeping costs down.
4. Trends
• Virtualization of Patient Care
Medical device manufacturers are creating new ways to minimize office visits for both patients
and clinicians. This can be done by monitoring patients remotely. By utilizing cloud-based
mobility services that deliver full reports via their mobile devices, clinicians can provide instant
remote care. Usage of analytics for to purpose of providing personalized reports also holds
promise.
• E-Commerce
Emerging technologies such as social, mobile and analytics (SMAC) are not only helping e-
commerce players in designing innovative marketing campaigns but are also helping them stay
ahead of competition. According to a report , there has been a 65% increase in online shopping
from last year and the e-commerce market in India is expected to grow to $200 billion by 2020,
triggered by SMAC and the trend will continue to increase.
• Other
At United Airlines, technology convergence has helped the airline reduce costs and increase
efficiency.
Mobile business intelligence being delivered through tablets and handheld devices is
revolutionizing business processes.
5. Future Trends
Utilizing context is the next wave of SMAC convergence . We have to be in step with users, from hotel to airport to
adventure, without being too invasive.
• Healthcare
It is one of the areas where is SMAC will have great impact in the next 5 years. Given that SMAC can be used to drive
cost savings and better outcomes for patients, its influence on the healthcare landscape is going to be considerable.
In fact, these technologies are already beginning to alter how health organizations interact with patients and one
another to deliver care and manage health. Health IT providers, physicians, hospitals, small practices and also the
insurance industry, are now collecting and analyzing meaningful data, when and where they want it.
• Marketing Intelligence
Corporate auditors can collect, process and share critical product insights from a single device. With intelligent,
powerful mobile applications, store visits become a lot more productive. Information about promotions, inventory,
pricing, product placement and competitors is transferred digitally and stored in the Cloud for further analytics and
processing. All of which drives smarter marketing strategies to increase sales.
• Other
In 2015, we should witness a close integration of big data analytics and data visualization.
In the next 5 years, there will be an increase in the adoption of Hybrid Clouds. There will be an increased growth in
the market and more applications will be available on the cloud thus enhancing the adoption of SMAC.
6. Interest Areas
• My interest areas in this topic is in the area of data analytics and
cloud computing.
• Big data and analytics is white hot in the market and is rapidly
emerging as the game-changer. It will play an instrumental role in
how organizations manage and capitalize on tonnes of structured and
unstructured data and analyze patterns and make crucial decisions.
• If provided an internship I would like to work on applications of
SMAC, especially data analytics and cloud computing, to applications
like healthcare and e-commerce.
