La réalité du progrès technologique veut qu’au XXIe siècle les innovations soient
efficaces énergétiquement, sans métaux lourds, non toxiques, sans terres rares et
durables.
Dans le domaine des sources d’éclairages et de lumière colorées, de grandes
améliorations sont apparues au courant des dernières décennies.
La technologie « Light Emitting Diode » (LED) en est un bon exemple. Une autre
technologie prometteuse est le pendant organique des LEDs, l’Organic Light Emitting
Diode (OLED).
Elle est actuellement utilisée dans la fabrication, entre autres, d’écran de téléphone
portable (Laäaäperi et al., 2007, p. 1183).
Mais le « Liquid Crystal Display » (LCD) est pourtant une technologie viable et mature
qui est en accord avec les exigences précédemment mentionnées. Alors, pourquoi il y
a autant d’attention sur la technologie OLED?

Cette technologie est très prometteuse de par ses applications actuelles et probables.
Sachant qu'il existe actuellement des prototypes d’écrans transparents et flexibles ou
courbés, ceux-ci pourraient être implémentés sur des surfaces vitrées comme des fenêtres
ou des lunettes pour des applications de réalité augmentée.
De plus, cela donnerait la possibilité d'avoir des écrans pliables ou enroulés. En considérant
ces manipulations, ceux-ci pourraient être plus grands et être transportés dans des espaces
réduits comme un sac à dos par exemple.
Il y a actuellement des prototypes d'imprimantes spécialement conçues pour imprimer des
écrans OLED de dimensions et de formes très variables.
Cela permettrait d'intégrer des écrans sur des murs ou meubles et ainsi avoir des surfaces
à apparence dynamique. Ces surfaces intégrant cette technologie auraient aussi la
possibilité de devenir un écran d'ordinateur ou de téléviseur.

Si cette technologie a autant de potentiel, pourquoi le marché n'est-il pas submergé par des produits OLED?
Malgré qu'il y ait déjà des écrans OLED pour les téléphones portables et les tablettes, le principal problème
avec cette technologie c'est que le matériau organique qui émet la lumière bleue a une durée de vie courte.
Les écrans OLED utilisant des pixels « Red, Green, Blue » (RGB) auront tendance à jaunir puisqu'il y a une perte
d'intensité des souspixels bleus (Laäaäperi et al., 2007, p. 1187). Le sous pixel bleu perd de son intensité plus
rapidement que le rouge ou le vert puisqu’il se dégrade plus rapidement que les autres.
Les variations de la durée de vie seront abordées plus en détail dans les chapitres suivants. La recherche
présentée dans ce mémoire a pour principal objectif de développer une méthode pour quantifier la durée de
vie d'un dispositif OLED selon des conditions ambiantes données.
Cette méthode permettrait d'écourter significativement les périodes de tests et ainsi accélérer l'élaboration
de nouveaux prototypes plus durables.

Ils utilisent le même principe qu'un écran LCD (écrans à cristaux liquides), mais
simplifié, puisque chaque pixel produit sa propre lumière.
Chaque diode LED OLED est organique, à l'inverse d'une LED « classique ».
Composant électronique luminescent composé d'une superposition de plusieurs
couches semi-conductrices organiques entre deux électrodes dont l'une (au
moins) est transparente ; surtout utilisée dans le domaine des écrans plats.
Quand on parle d’OLED, à la différence des écrans LED, on désigne l’ensemble
des écrans dont la luminosité dépend de micro-substances organiques.

OLED

diodes juxtaposées (bleue, rouge et verte) dont l’épaisseur ne
dépasse pas un millimètre.
