★ Why OLED
○ low power consumption
○ no backlight required (self emitting)
○ brighter
○ thinner
○ high contrast

★ History of OLED
○ first developed by Eastman Kodak in 1987
○ first commercial PMOLED by Pioneer in 1996
○ many companies developed OLED display in 2000
○ Sony developed world’s largest fullcolor OLED in
2001
○ Over 10 million PMOLED sub-displays were sold in
2003
★ What is OLED
○ Organic Light Emitting diode
○ comprised of very thin films of organic layers
○ create light when corrent passes

Components
organic light emitting diode
1. Substrate
2. Anode
3. Organic layers
a. Conducting layer: transport holes from
anode.
b. Emissive layer: transport electrons from
cathode.
4. Cathode
Working principle
organic light emitting diode
Electrical current:
● remove electrons from the conductive layer
● gives electrons to the emissive layer
● conductive layer leaves holes that filled with
the electrons of emissive layer
● the holes jumps to the emissive layer and
recombine with the electrons.
As the electrons drop into the holes, they release
their extra energy as light.

Advantages
❖ layers are lighter, thinner and flexible
❖ substrate can be plastic
❖ brighter image due to thinner organic layers
❖ no light blocking system
❖ no backlight required
❖ large view angle
❖ capable to produce perfect black image
❖ blue OLED flims have short lifetime
❖ Manufacturing is expensive
❖ Interaction with water causes instant
damage.
❖ more power consume to produce white
image.
❖ white image leads to reduce battery life.
Disadvantages

● Mainly used as display of
○ TV screen
○ PC monitors
○ Phone screen
○ Camera screen
○ Car deshboard

Future Scope
organic light emitting diode
● OLED technology may usher in a new era of large-area, transparent, flexible and low-energy display and lighting
products.
● The flexibility of OLEDs enables manufacturers to produce OLEDs using roll-to-roll manufacturing processes,
and allows for the production of flexible display and lighting products.
● Developing sufficiently durable and flexible OLEDs will require better materials and further development of
manufacturing tools and processes.
● Research and development in the field of OLEDs is proceeding rapidly.
And this may lead to the future application in heads- up displays, automotive dashboards, billboard type
displays, home and office lightings and flexible displays.
Conclusion
organic light emitting diode
● OLEDs could open a new era in organic optoelectronics and serve as test beds to address general fundamental
optoelectronic and photonic issues.
● The focus of OLED development is the possibility to enable new display/light source technologies, and exploit a
transport geometry to suppress the deleterious photon losses and exciton quenching mechanisms inherent in
the OLED architecture.
