The world has changed dramatically since LEAN and Six Sigma were popularized in the early 1990′s. Globalization, product proliferation, information technology, intense competition, and an activist regulatory environment have contributed to a rapid rise in complexity. As a result, many companies are finding that LEAN and Six Sigma aren’t delivering the results they expected. In this presentation, delivered by Chris Seifert at APICS 2013, we discuss a new approach that a select few companies are utilizing to achieve Operational Excellence in the face of complexity.

In “ The Discipline of Market Leaders – Choose your Customers, Narrow your Focus, Dominate your Market, ” Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema describe three distinct value propositions or disciplines an organization can choose to compete in their market or industry– Operational Excellence , Product Leadership , and Customer Intimacy .
Market leaders choose to excel in delivering extraordinary levels of one of these three value propositions, while maintaining competitive standards in the other disciplines.
Based on Treacy’s and Wiersema’s findings, market leaders will not pursue a diffused business strategy across two or even all three disciplines, but will continually focus on their organizational design, processes, technology, and competencies to improve the one particular value discipline that they want to provide to their Customers better than anyone else.
Organizations pursuing an Operational Excellence differentiation strategy are able to deliver a combination of quality, price, and ease of purchase and service that no other organization in their market or industry can match.
Achieving Operational Excellence requires the successful implementation of a Business Execution System that effectively and seamlessly integrates the following four building blocks: Strategy Deployment , Performance Management , Process Excellence , and High Performance Work Teams .
First, Operational Excellence organizations follow a well defined Strategy and Operational Planning & Deployment Process that ensures collaboration and alignment among the different parts of the organization and effectively links strategic and operational objectives, initiatives and execution. Strategy Mapping and Hoshin Planning provide this systematic and collaborative planning, execution, and review process.

Companies need a sustainable model for leading continuous change - yet most leadership teams are too busy running the business to effectively lead change. Many transformation efforts fail due to false starts, organizational resistance, and a lack of effective governance. We will explore a strategic change project management model that has repeatedly resulted in successful ongoing change initiatives. The model draws on Agile and Lean principles and techniques to lead change initiatives in a way that is simple, provides focus and transparency, and builds trust.
The accounting profession has felt the impact of change. Over the past several years, operational changes in workflow and process have dramatically altered the scope of the accountant’s role. The profession’s workforce is aging, underlining the importance of succession planning and talent management. Additionally, as the digital universe doubles in size every other year, many firms struggle to keep pace with the latest technology trends.
For today’s firm, change is constant. And across the entire tax, accounting and audit profession, the forecast calls for even greater shifts in people, processes and technology.
These ever-evolving realities inspired Wolters Kluwer, CCH, a strategic partner to accounting firms, to explore two major questions in the 2014 Wolters Kluwer, CCH — Accounting Firm Preparedness Survey.

2. Introduction
• Catavolt launched a survey titled “How Leading Manufacturers
are Accelerating Operational Excellence” in September 2014, to
gain insight on how manufacturing organizations are working to
continuously improve their operations, workflows and business
processes
• We collected 111 responses from manufacturing professionals in
various disciplines on trends and technology that are driving
operational excellence.
3. Survey Respondents
Of the 111 survey respondents, 81% identified themselves
as executive management or plant, engineering or quality
managers in a manufacturing organization:
4. Survey Respondents
Employees at firms with
greater than 10,000 full-time
employees were the largest
group of respondents in
terms of company size, at
36%.
Nearly two thirds (64%) of
respondents come from
companies with greater than
1,000 full-time employees.
A wide variety of manufacturing industries
were represented in the survey responses.
Healthcare, transportation, aerospace and
energy were the most prominent.
5. Top Operational Excellence
Challenges
Three primary challenges for manufacturing organizations
when executing operational excellence initiatives:
① Doing more with current tools, people, and processes
② Increasing revenue and cash flow
③ Lowering the cost of production
6. Definition of Success
By understanding customer expectations, organizations can determine what service
levels are expected to keep them happy and enable their teams to focus on fulfilling
those expectations.
7. Putting Data to Work
Top Three Forces Impacting Operational Excellence:
① Organizations are not using data effectively
② Accuracy and completeness of data is not reliable
③ Data is kept in information “siloes”
8. All-In On Operational Excellence
85% of survey respondents say their organization will
increase investment of time and resources into operational
excellence initiatives.
Each initiative requires optimization of key resources
internally, including people, processes, space, time, energy,
and technology to achieve success.
The use of mobile devices and apps to drive operational
excellence in manufacturing facilities and supply chain
operations is a notable, recent development.

business management visibility
Create lean and secure operations
Replace manual, paper-based processes
Which of the following areas do you believe would be most
impactful for your organization when implementing
mobile technology projects?
Survey results indicated
that respondents from a
variety of disciplines are
able to articulate specific
manufacturing
applications where
mobility would add value.
12. Mobility and the Added-Value of
Productivity
Respondents overwhelmingly believe mobility can help drive
productivity, but there’s no consensus yet on how much.

13. In Conclusion
Manufacturing organizations cannot operate to their maximum potential
without being aware of the latest market trends in production, customer
service, sales, and resource optimization.
Responsive manufacturing organizations are always anticipating changes in
the workplace and the market, and they are rapidly adapting their
operations to satisfy them based on current trends and new, advanced
technologies.
Manufacturers realize that technology is providing organizations with the
