2. What is Socialization?
 Simply put, socialization is norms and
patterns that society agrees are fit and
normal. They are what people in the society
are expected to do and how they should act.

3. Gender Roles
 Gender roles are constantly being presented to
viewers on everything they see, from advertisements,
TV shows, movies, cartoons, and so on.
 The roles exist because society is accepting them.
 Young kids are primary targets for gender roles
especially when it comes to toys. Girls are always
shown to play with babies, barbies, pink and soft,
while boys are showed to play with cars, action
figures, and tool sets.

 When children are exposed over and over to the
roles that they are “supposed” to be a part of, their
minds are contorted to think that is the only way.
This is how the media and the movie industry are
gaining control over the audiences.
 Girls are shown in predominantly soft spoken, house
wife type, and emotionally situations where boys are
shown in macho man, athletic, and hands on
situations.

5.  At such young ages, children are being socialized into
what they should be doing in society. This can teach
positive things but it also leaves the door open for
those who don’t fit such tight knit roles.
 Bullying becomes an issue and if you’re different or
if you don’t fit the “norm” you are the target just
because the media has engulfed the young minds of
your peers.

6. That being said…
 Such power to be able to manipulate the mind of
children, the movie industry has taken their power
and use it to manipulate the thoughts and opinions
of the adult viewers as well.
 Movies are usually based off of something real or
something that has happened and then sometimes
they are made with twists on them; this enables the
audience to feel sympathy for possibly the “good
country” as opposed to the enemy.

7. Other countries..
 Some see the movie industry as so powerful with its
persuasion and ideas that they are banned in other
countries.
 In North Korea, dozens of people have been
executed recently due to them watching foreign films.
Their government sees the films as a tool to alter
their people’s thoughts that they made it against the
law to do this.

8. Government and movies
 In the U.S. the movie industry creates and produces
movies that generally are pro government, unlike
other countries like North Korea.
 When young minds watch movies that show the
government as valiant, and strong and as a friend to
the people, it helps alter the perception of the young
audience to think more favorably of our own
government in the U.S.

10. Socialization to extreme
situations…
 Although, there are those who argue that the movie
industry is out to brainwash everyone and there are
those who think the movie industry is nothing more
than entertainment.
 With that being said, what people, at least in the
United States, think to be entertaining may not
always be something so delightful and pleasant.

11. The trends are what people
sought to watch.
 Love, crime and sex are the three commodities that
seem to be a reoccurring theme in movies, and that is
because that is what people want to see.
 For people of all ages, they see the most exposure to
violence in movies. Some could argue that video
games are a huge outlet to crime and violence as
well.
 It would appear that deviants had some sort of
predisposition, but it turns out that exposure to
movies wasn’t the cause from crime and violence.

 A huge downside with the constant reoccurring
themes of love, crime, and violence, is that it
desensitizes people to those situations.
 Horror films are always a thrill seek and people
continually go see them which draws the question,
why would we pay to go see a slasher flick where
annoying teenagers get killed? This completely ties
back into the psyche factor.

14. Movies are movies
 Violence is exposed to the audience without question
in movies, but it is also highly exaggerated because it
is just that, a movie.
 No aftermath of what is going to happen to the
characters is thought about, the plan seems to be so
simple, and it’s as if the love, crime, and violence are
such easy and simple ideas that can be so easily
handled.

15. Positive or Negative
 With the socialization of society, the movies that are
created for the public can be either positive or
negative. Especially now, movies really almost have
no boundaries of what they can be about. Body
dismorphia teaches people to hate themselves, anti-
religion movies can depict religion poorly, and
mobster movies can glorify a bad way to live because
it looks so good.
 Technically, movies do have an impact on the psyche
of it’s audience. It can skew their outlook on life, but
in the end hopefully just continue to stay as
entertainment.

16. Mass Communication
 The movie industry is so powerful because so many
different audiences have the ability to see different
movies.
 Each movie contains its own message, and with that
it communicates an idea.
 People can interpret the idea presented in many
different ways and this is where misunderstandings
can really come into play.

 With communication, we know that sometimes the
ideas are not clearly understood by the other party. It
can misconstrue the idea that was trying to be
expressed and completely alter the meaning which
can cause tension between parties.
 Being as the movie industry can’t respond to it’s
audiences, the audience has the interpretation of the
idea that they have just seen, and no further
explanation. They now can do with the information
what they will.

18. Access.
 Due to so many people being able to have access to
see different movies, this allows a different form of
art to be expressed and shared.
 Reflection, discussion, and education sit right along
side of entertainment when it comes the movie
industry.
 History, theories, documentaries, and so much more
are all accessible agents from the movie industry and
by being a part of mass communication, multiple
people have the power to engage in it.
