‘Yuj’ is a Sanskrit word which means ‘to bind, to join, to attach, to yoke; to direct and concentrate one’s attention on, to use and apply. It also means union or communion.’
In the yogic lore, Shiva is seen as the first yogi, and the first Guru. It is a root word of ‘Yoga’ and a discipline that aims to unite the mind, body and spirit. It has a lot of physical, spiritual and psychological benefits.
Seals and fossil remains of Indus Saraswati valley civilization with Yogic motives and figures performing Yoga Sadhana suggest the presence of Yoga in ancient India. Though Yoga was being practiced in the pre-Vedic period, the great Sage Maharshi Patanjali systematized and codified the then existing practices of Yoga, its meaning and its related knowledge through his Yoga Sutras: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi. The Classical period can be mainly dedicated to two great religious teachers of India – Mahavir and Buddha. The concept of Five great vows – Pancha mahavrata- by Mahavir and Ashta Magga or eightfold path by Buddha - can be well considered as early nature of Yoga sadhana. According to modern scientists, everything in the universe is just a manifestation of the same quantum firmament.
Yoga works on the level of one’s body, mind, emotion and energy. This has given rise to four broad classifications of Yoga: karma yoga, where we utilize the body; bhakti yoga, where we utilize the emotions; gyana yoga, where we utilize the mind and intelect; and kriya yoga, where we utilize the energy.
Yoga allows you to find an inner peace that is not ruffled and riled by the endless stresses and struggles of life. The people with possibly stabled mind will enhance their mental and physical power to work in their profession more effectively.

Creating a Conscious Humanity: The Yogic Way
“It is rarest of rare to be born a compassionate and disciplined human” said the great Tamil Saint Avvai. The spiritual quality of such a human incarnation is further enhanced when we are given the chance to create a future offspring in a truly conscious manner. No conception is an accident in the Universal scheme of things and hence we as parents are bound by our responsibility to be as conscious as possible of all the positive factors influencing the creation, birthand nurturing of a new living being. When we truly ‘care’, we become ‘careful’ and when this is done with love, we enable the Divinity of each Athma to manifest through us in the best possible manner.
Yoga is the art and science of conscious, mindful and common sense living. It has enormous potential to help expectant parents prepare themselves physically, mentally, emotionally for this grand experience that should be a very spiritual one too. Yoga as a way of life focuses on right living and right thinking while utilizing various tools for the overall psycho-physiological health of the parent and child.
The various pratices such as the Jathis, Kriyas and Asanas help promote healthy functioning of all body systems while Pranayama induces psycho-somatic harmony with a Pranicenergisation of every cell of the body. Various Mudras and Bandhas such as Aswini Mudra, Yoni Mudra and MoolaBandhabalance ApanaVayu and tone up the pelvic musculature while inducing a sense of inner wellbeing. Various concentrative and contemplative practices (Dharana and Dhyana) enable an inner peace with the development of a deep sense of self-understanding. Yogic relaxation practices facilitate a balanced and relaxed anabolic inner environment that promotes the healthy growth and development of the baby with the facilitation of healing at all levels of being.
Yogic diet with a stress on natural life-giving (Satvic) foodsand adequate hydration helps the mother nurture the child growing within herself and fortify herself for the challenging events to come. A balanced lacto-vegetarian diet rich in calcium, iron and other essential vitamins and minerals is advocated with training in the preparation of soups, salads and sprouts. Foods of the Sattwic nature elevate the mother’s consciousness thus helping to create an uplifting psycho-mental-spiritual inner environment developing the inherent potential of the child in a wonderful manner.
The role of the father in the whole process must never be underestimated and his involvement in both the practical Yoga sessions as well as in the adoption of a Yogic diet with positive attitudes is vital for the success of the programme. Yoga can help the family top bond together and such a bond is a boon to the entire social unit that is based on healthy inter-personal relationships.

Dear readers,
A healthy body is home to a healthy mind. Only when something goes wrong do we realize just how much we depend on our bodies.
So, this November, Daaji, Luke Coutinho, Simonne Holm, Pooja Kini, and Alanda Greene explore aspects of growing and eating healthy food, for the good of body, mind, and spirit. Elizabeth Denley looks at simple ways Nature heals us, Karishma Desai and Alison Granger-Brown present aspects of emotional well-being, and KashishKalwani shares her fellow students’ attitudes toward eco-anxiety. IchakAdizes discusses the health benefits of effective delegation at work, and Daaji explains the physical and mental health benefits of mudras at work.
May these articles inspire you to take the time for hale and hearty health!
Heartfulness Magazine JUNE 2017 Issuesheartfulness
We celebrate International Day of Yoga, held every year on 21st June, with a feature article of Daaji. He highlights the essence of Yoga, which is unity and oneness, and helps us find ways to integrate the various aspects of life according to our heart’s longing. Also, a professional athlete shares her experience of integrating sport with meditation practice, we conclude our interview with Patrick Fleury on health, and Dr. Rene Descartes summarizes the status of research on meditation. The issue is filled other articles, photos, recipes and quotations, and for children we have a new story as well as an interesting experiment with water.
The beginning of January is when we evaluate what has been, and resolve to realize our hopes and dreams for the coming year. It is a time for change.
The ancient art of meditation is designed to clear the mind, open the heart, and allow us to access our inner
potential, so that decision-making becomes effortless, and we learn how to embrace change. Woolly brain syndrome disappears. Confidence and courage radiate from the heart. It is not magic – work is required – but the results arethere for all those who wish to make the effort.
If you would like to give yourselves a gift for the New Year, please join us for a series of three masterclasses in meditation on the 2, 3 and 4 January 2017, conducted by Kamlesh D. Patel (www.heartfulness.org/masterclass).
Happy New Year from all of us at Heartfulness Magazine. May 2017 be filled with peace, love and joy.

Reawakening the Soul, Exploration Guidebook for Self-DiscoverySundara Fawn
Many of us feel the pressures and anxiety that plague us in our daily lives. We were taught to do whatever it takes to achieve material gain, believing that this would bring us happiness. Then one day, we wake up to realize that the goals we have pursued do not satisfy our souls. We feel unhappy, discontented and stressed. Our soul feels empty, lost and hungry for truth.
2. Dear friends,
I offer my heartfelt blessings to you from the Yoga Retreat
in the Bahamas. It is my pleasure to present the 2013–2014
program, designed with great care to allow you to go deeper on
your spiritual path; to expand your heart, your mind, and your
horizons; and to discover the joy of our unity and the beauty of
our diversity.
This program is inspired by the vision of our Guru, Swami
Visnudevananda, who left a profound and complex legacy. As the years pass, it
becomes ever more clear that his mission to help humanity was based on deep
wisdom and insight. To him, the source of our human suffering came from the
level of our consciousness and the remedy involved a shift of consciousness
that would uplift humanity into higher dimensions. He foresaw this shift, which
is taking place at this time, but he also knew that like all transformations, it could
be painful and difficult. His work was to ease the pain, sooth the transition, and
help humanity move forward towards a bright future. He did so by training yoga
teachers, conducting peace missions, and teaching humanity about the four
paths of yoga and the yoga of synthesis.
Swamiji also recognized that some souls incarnated with the purpose of helping
mankind in this transition, including many yogis, saints, spiritual leaders, healers,
scientists, sacred artists, and musicians. He made it a point to find those
individuals, to invite them to our ashrams and centers, and to ask them to share
their knowledge, their wisdom, and their light. His vision was to bring them
together so they could interact with one another and let their light truly shine.
In next season’s program, we bring together previously skeptical scientists who
awakened to new truths and ground-breaking researchers investigating the
nature of reality; we gather rabbis, priests, lamas, and swamis to debate on the
ultimate goal of the spiritual path; we invite Ayurvedic healers, Chinese doctors,
herbalists, shamans, and physicians to share their vision of health and vitality;
and we welcome cantors, gospel choirs, Sufi singers, and kirtan groups to share
the ecstasy of devotional singing. Through these gatherings, we continue the
mission of Swami Visnudevananda to help humanity on its karmic journey.
I invite you to participate in these events of light, beauty, and wisdom and to
contribute by bringing in your own light. We are privileged to be alive at this
time, a time that yogis, mystics, scientists, and spiritual leaders recognize as the
most special and unique in the history of humanity and planet Earth. Join us, and
be part of this truth.
Wishing you a wonderful, fulfilling, and shining year ahead!
Om shanti, Om peace,

4. Our Lineage
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat follows an unbroken lineage of teachers
who practice the classical yogic wisdom of Swami Sivananda, which
was introduced to the West by his disciple, Swami Vishnudevananda. We are
part of an ever-growing international organization of Sivananda ashrams and
centers, with the mission to share peace, health, and joy through yoga.
Swami Sivananda (1887-1963)
A venerated saint of modern times, Swami Sivananda is the
inspiration behind the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta
Centres. Following a brilliant career as a medical doctor,
Swami Sivananda renounced worldly life and established the
Sivananda Ashram and Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, India.
He became one of the most prolific yoga teachers who has ever lived, authoring
more than 300 books. Although he rarely left Rishikesh, Swami Sivananda’s
teachings quickly spread worldwide, continuing to deeply touch and transform
the lives of many to this day.
Swami Vishnudevananda (1927-1993)
Swami Vishnudevananda trained under Swami Sivananda
in all aspects of yoga for ten years, becoming a world
authority on yoga. In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent Swami
Vishnudevananda to spread the teachings of yoga in the
West, where he founded and directed the International
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and created the first Yoga Teacher Training
Course to empower individuals to be ambassadors of peace through Swami
Sivananda’s yoga teachings. A tireless campaigner for world peace and a master
of Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga, he authored the now classic books The Complete
Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras.

Cultivating Vairagya
The Practice of Non-Attachment
We are all looking for happiness, but
according to the teachings of yoga, we
usually fail to obtain it because we are
looking in the wrong place. We think that
through more wealth, more entertainment,
more objects, we will become happy.
But yoga teaches us that happiness is
within, that it is our own nature. The
way to gain happiness is to let go of our
attachments to external objects and
false identifications. By letting go of the
false, we are left with the truth of our own
essential nature.
Swami Brahmananda
is Manager of the Yoga
Retreat and senior staff
member of the Sivananda

practitioner of yoga, he

philosophy and meditation for the Teacher

Vedantic Meditation
The Practice of Self-Inquiry
Brahmachari Shankar
Learn Advaita Vedanta philosophy
and experience a variety of meditation
techniques. Vedantic philosophy asserts
that we live in ignorance—that we see the
world in a distorted way, and therefore we
suffer. This philosophy states that the end of
ignorance is also the end of suffering, and
that the root of ignorance is our ignorance
regarding our own selves. Meditation then
becomes a tool for Self-analysis; we learn
to introvert and probe our inner world and,
ultimately, get to know our True Self.
Brahmachari Shankar is a

in scriptures and fluent in
Sanskrit, he spent three

Neuroscience
and World Religions
Different Practices, Different Brains, Different Spiritualities?
Stephen Kaplan, Daniel Drubach, William Waldron,
Prantik Kundu
For five days we will explore the interface between religious/spiritual practices and the
brain sciences. Our speakers will examine some of the different practices that can be
found in the world’s religions and explain how contemporary neurosciences understand
what is happening in the brains of those who engage such practices. We will not only
ask if different religious practices produce different brain states, but we will also ask if
these different practices produce different states of mental and spiritual health. Do some
practices produce one type of mental/spiritual health and other practices produce others?
These discussions may lead us to ask if these diversities of practice and neurological
function lead to a diversity of spiritual experiences.
