At the XXIV World Congress of Architecture (UIA), held in Tokyo in 2011 after the historically devastating events in Japan in March 2011, professionals and students working in architectural and urban fields consequently made a pledge to "promote responsibility within our profession, support architects and architecture, and enhance the regional quality of life for all people, together with governments and others, by closing the gaps in social justice, whilst working towards sustainability". This commitment is expressed in the idea of the cooperation of well-known architects, architecture students and local communities in the creation of architecture in selected examples of completed buildings in South-East and South Asia, particular in Cambodia and Sri Lanka. The architects referred to the traditional local materials and construction techniques that had been forgotten or superseded by global ones, and rediscovered centuries-old solutions, which in turn allowed the appropria...

Post-graduate course in architecture at Mejan Arc at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, 60 academic credits
Deadline for applications: June13th, 2011
Africa is rapidly urbanizing. 40% of the continent’s population is now urban, but despite Africa’s extensive natural resources and strong economic growth, neither international nor local investments find their way to the cities. In postcolonial Africa the City is still considered an exception. Basic infrastructure is still lacking and urbanization is occurring primarily in the form of slums, as silent encroachments. However, African urban researchers note that the African city should not be considered simply incomplete versions of their western counterparts. Indeed, the African city is following its own route with a very different map. These cities are growing as nodes in mutually dependent networks that span over national boundaries. Their populations are in perpetual movement – constantly in search of work and possibilities.
The city of Cape Town has a young, multi-cultural population and engagement from grassroots movements as well as academics and practitioners spans from social to spatial issues. Nowhere is the discourse on the Right to the City more urgently apparent than here. The conditions for an inclusive future based on equitably distributed resources are here and now. The city begs the question – can Cape Town show the way towards a genuinely more sustainable urban Africa, or will a refusal to act keep this development from occurring?
Resource.11 continues its present program series Happy Grounds – a multiple-year investigation of alternative urban models and perspectives on development generated from particularly advantageous breeding grounds, such as climate, topography, cultural expressions, resources, economies or social phenomena. We now look towards South Africa where we will take part of the intensive debate concerning the African city that is going on right now in Cape Town.
Are you an architect, landscape architect, urban planner, artist, designer or simply passionate about architecture and urban issues? Join us for a year of cross-disciplinary studies during the academic year 2011-12.
BRAVE NEW WORLD Architecture Masters Studio 2021-22_Caroline SohieCaroline Sohie
The Brave New World Master Thesis studio at the Faculty of Architecture of KU Leuven University operates in the space between design, critical fiction and speculative futures.
Set up as an urban futures think-tank, the framework of the studio positions architecture as a critical medium to articulate the unknown – and in some ways unknowable – futures.
The objective is to identify strategic design agendas and enable alternative development patterns to leverage empowered responses to 21st century global challenges.
The studio examines the entangled local and global implications of our changing habitat. Using speculative design techniques, future worlds are envisioned in response to the complex questions facing us today. Framed by the ‘what if’ question, the studio opens up spaces of debate, research and imagination.
Brave New World offers an alternative design lens to examine how our urban existence could be, to imagine alternative trajectories and investigate what future we collectively want. ‘The City’ forms the studio’s playing field and the research-by-design process is led by the central question; what is the future of the city, or conversely, what will be the city of the future?

Infrastructural Urban Voids as an Instrument for Homogenous Urban Fabric Case...civejjour
In historic time social factors around the spatial existing framework generated development of the city.
What we see today is contradictory as economic factors govern the growth of the city. Speed of
transformation is noticeably high, while the growth of the city majors in a quantity of physical
infrastructural development rather than the quality of public life. Ironically, when we look at a newly
planned city like Navi Mumbai infrastructural needs sometimes are becoming the reason for the creation of
urban voids in the city fabric. This paper is going to focus on Infrastructural linear voids which are cutting
the morphology of the city. Urban Infrastructural voids in Kharghar are identified and typologies are
formulated by observational study. This paper investigates if we can utilize these Infrastructural urban
voids holistically to formulate a network of public spaces to bind the city holistically.

Unlocking the Potentials of Urban Architecture in Enhancing the Quality of Ur...IEREK Press
Currently more than half of world population are living in cities, while world is witnessing a rapid urbanization process particularly in cities of the developing and emerging countries, where urban poverty areas (UPA) with low quality of urban life (QUL) and lack of the usual urban spaces are the most significant urban phenomena that characterized those cities. In such an urban context there is a need for an efficient tool that contributes positively to the enhancement of the QUL, meanwhile to provide the best use of the rare vacant lands. This study argues that urban architecture as a design field offers a distinctive approach to a special type of buildings made for an urban setting, thus it can enhance the QUL in UPA through community projects. The study is based on an analytical study of selected cases of community projects in UPA that represents examples of how urban architecture through its potentials has a positive impact on its urban context, notably through community projects that strongly linked to real community needs. The results showed that urban architecture as a design approach for community projects have multiple roles that boost the socio-economic daily life, as well it supports various environmental issues towards better QUL.

The Study of Safavi Northern Chahar-Bagh Street of Shiraz, Iran; from the Sta...Dorna Eshrati
The historical urban landscape is a new approach towards the historical city as the product
of human interaction with micro ecosystem over the passage of time that has recently gained a special
position in urban conservation. This paper begins with raising the question that how this approach can
be used to solve the challenges of conservation and development of historical cities. Exploring the
conservation documents indicate that viewpoint to historical city has shifted from ‘the atomistic perspective
to holistic’, ‘static to dynamic’, ‘product-oriented to process-oriented’, ‘conflict with micro-ecosystem
to interact with micro-ecosystem’, and ‘the contrast of conservation and development’ to the integration
of them. The purpose of this paper is to review the northern Safavi Chahar-Bagh street of shiraz in the
city master plan to find out how the street conservation and development is based on historical urban
landscape. The data for this research were collected through observations and documents review and
were analyzed qualitatively. The survey results show that the new doctrines of urban conservation seek
to integrate conservation and development based on historical urban landscape; however, the definition
of the Historical city boundary in the master plan of shiraz is still based on static and atomistic doctrines
that consider historical cities limited to the historical wall. This is while the northern Chahar-Bagh street
of shiraz which was the main historical axis of the city during the Safavi period was located outside the
historical wall of the city. Not paying attention to this street has caused the gradual destruction of this
historical urban landscape, despite the individual protection of some of its elements. Reviewing the case
study based on the historical urban landscape approach reveals the need for a reconsideration and revision
of the developments urban plans.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

In the field of Architecture and Urban Planning, a global awareness is growing, questioning
established development and settlement patterns in regard to future societal needs and ensuing
planning strategies and architectural interventions. Whereas until now, Western society could take its
advantageous position for granted, the current fast-forward global development increasingly strains
the western and European model, inducing a whole range of urban planning and architectural
challenges.
Facing the consequences of an ageing society and a post-industrial and knowledge-based economy,
these developments stand in stark contrast with rapidly developing economies and a still expanding
population worldwide. Instigating important and unchartered societal shifts, our conception of
urbanity and the city is fundamentally affected. Traditional urban planning methods and architectural
strategies might not offer the necessary tools to recognize and address these future challenges and
therefore need to be reconsidered.
Within these changing context and transition processes, the International Urban Architectural Design
and Urban Cultures Master seeks to research, develop and teach alternative architectural and urban
planning tools, not so much aimed at reinventing urban landscapes, but as it were to edit the given
condition from within.
A critical and coherent attitude towards recent urban phenomena is considered the base for research
and design on different levels.
