STRATEGIC INTERVENTION
MATERIAL in SCIENCE 7
SY: 2017-2018
Prepared:
BERNADETTE L.
MACADANGDANG
TITLE CARD
When you look-up in the sky you willsee a vast space whichis a thousand milesfarther from you. It iswhat we all call theAtmosphere.
In this StrategicIntervention Materialyou will know detailsabout the EARTH’sATMOSPHERE.
Have fun whilereading and learning.
GUIDE CARD
OBJECTIVES
This Strategic Intervention
Material (SIM) helps you to
know about:
What is atmosphere?
How atmosphere evolved?
What are the layers of the
atmosphere?
What are the importance of
atmosphere?
GUIDE CARD
DISCUSSION
Although some
details about the
atmospheres of other
planets and satellites are
known, only the earth’s
atmosphere has been
well studied, the science
of which it is concerned
called meteorology.
DISCUSSION
Atmosphere is the mixture
of gases surrounding a
celestial body with
sufficient gravity to
maintain it.
How our atmosphere
evolved?
I. The early atmosphere did not
support life. It contained deadly
gases such as Methane and
Ammonia. There was very little
Oxygen.
II. Over time, gases were added to
the atmosphere by volcanic
eruptions, and as a result of
chemical reactions due to
sunlight.
DISCUSSION
How our atmosphere
evolved?
III. The OZONE LAYER formed as a
result of the chemical reactions.
Ozone is made of three oxygen
atoms bonded together. It blocks out
ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
IV. The formation of the ozone layer
allowed MICRO-ORGANISMS such as
Blue-Green Algae to appear on earth.
They take in carbon dioxide and
release oxygen, so the amount of
OXYGEN in the atmosphere steadily
increased.
DISCUSSION
How our atmosphere
evolved?
V. Stromatolites were some of
the early organisms that used
Photosynthesis to convert CO2
into Oxygen. They still exist today
and have survived 5 mass
extinctions!
DISCUSSION
DISCUSSION
 Earth’s atmosphere is made of a
mixture of gases called air.
Nitrogen gas makes up about
 78% of Earth’s atmosphere.
The second most abundant gas is
oxygen, which makes up 21% of
Earth’s atmosphere.
The third Argon (Ar, 0.9%).
Carbon Dioxide (CO2, 0.03%).
DISCUSSION
DISCUSSION
Basis for Layers
• Layers are based on TEMPERATURE
CHANGE within the layer.
• As you move up through the
troposphere, temperature decreases.
• As you move up through
stratosphere, temperature increases.
• As you move up through the
mesosphere, temperature decreases
• As you move up through the
thermosphere, temperature
increases.
DISCUSSION
IMPORTANCE OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
 Absorbs the energy from the
Sun,
 Recycles water and other
chemicals,
 protects us from high-energy
radiation and the frigid
vacuum of space.
 The atmosphere protects and
supports life.
 Influences the weather that is
consists of the day-to-day
fluctuations of environmental
variables.
DISCUSSION
Directions: Find the words below in the word
search and then write their definitions.

Write true if the statement is true or false
if the statement is false.
_____ 1. Most of the heat in the troposphere comes
directly from the sun.
_____ 2. Convection currents occur in all five layers
of the atmosphere.
_____ 3. Most of the heat that enters the
mesosphere comes from the stratosphere.
_____ 4. Friction with gas molecules causes
meteors to burn up in the atmosphere.
_____ 5. The troposphere rises to about 50
kilometers above Earth’s surface.
_____ 6. The top of the mesosphere is warmer than
the bottom.
_____ 7. The aurora borealis occurs because of
storms on Earth’s surface.
_____ 8. The thermosphere contains charged
particles called ions.
_____ 9. The exosphere merges gradually with outer
space.
_____ 10. Gas molecules in the exosphere are
extremely cold.
ACTIVITY CARD
Fill in the blank with the appropriate
term.
1. If cool air stays close to the ground below
a layer of warm air, it creates a(n)
__________.
2. A layer of ozone gas is located in the
__________.
3. Meteors burn up as they pass through
the __________.
4. The northern and southern lights occur in
the __________.
5. The top layer of the atmosphere is called
the __________.
6. The densest layer of air in the
atmosphere is the ____________.
7. All of Earth’s weather takes place in the
__________.
ACTIVITY CARD
Complete the diagram by giving the
characteristics of each layer of the atmosphere.
ACTIVITY CARD
Draw something that can be observed in each of
the layer of the atmosphere.
