Investor Questions
•
•
•
•

What have you got (your thing/technology)?
Why should I care or listen?
How do I make money?
Could I work with this person?

12
What have you got?
Is your Product or Service a good way
to make money…
•
•
•
•
•

A strong solution to a clear problem?
Big market?
Differentiated? Safe from competition?
Gaining adoption?
What are the risks in your business?

Do your homework!
If you don’t find the problems and weaknesses in your
model, your investors and customers will.

13
Why should I care or listen?
Investors hear many hundreds of
pitches. Get their attention with a
great story…
• Sales and other evidence there is money to
be made
• Disciplined track record, above average
results with limited resources
• Solid go-to-market strategy
• Solid Founders/Team/Advisors/Strategic
connections

How do I make money?
•
•
•
•

The Ask
Use of funds? Future need for funds?
Basis for profits, investor returns and value growth?
Who else is looking to invest? Now and in the
future?

To investors, your company is a potential way to make
money. Don’t make investors do the work to figure
out how this will happen!

Are they thinking about my interests?
Trust?

16
Pitching
• Is about what the investor wants to know, not about
what you want to say.
• Include the bare minimum of technology
• Practice, practice, practice and listen to feedback
• Keep it brief
• Do not argue with investors!

Stand out as a good investment by
speaking to the investor’s needs
and interests.

17
Preparation
Investment Strategy
• What is end goal? – How much $, what will
$ be used for? How will it accelerate
business growth? Key differentiators, WIFM
for investor?
• How/When? - Existing investors vs. new,
expand sales/revenues, timing relative to
company milestones
• Cost of investment? – Is your valuation
defensible? How much of company will you
give up?
