During the 12th century, German settlers known as Transylvanian Saxons were invited to defend the frontier of the Kingdom of Hungary and established a settlement in present-day Sighișoara by 1191. The town was built on the site of a Roman fort and received various names over time before becoming known as Sighișoara in 1337 when it was granted urban status by the kings. Sighișoara is located on the Târnava Mare river in Mureș county, Romania and has a population of around 28,000. It is considered one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe due to its authentic architecture and fortified citadel built on a hill overlooking the lower
