In officially revealing out of curiousity and for information, that I was originally planning to run for the now defunct post of SHSU Activities Officer in 2019: I do formally share the Manifesto I had developed during the 2018/2019 Academic Year and of which would have been my Election platform!
Vacha resource centre for Women Girls annual report 2018 19VIBHUTI PATEL
Vacha has impacted the lives of 77784 individuals through its creative and engaging programmes in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar Districts for building capacities in different areas.
Out of these, 70343 were extension beneficiaries, who have attended our events such as street play performances, meetings, rallies, newsletter release functions and public debates. Of these, 70 % were girls and women and 30% were boys and men
A total of 7441 i.e. 10 per cent were direct beneficiaries, who enrolled themselves for Vacha’s regular sessions, workshops, trainings, career fairs, gender and health fairs and camps and film screenings with follow up discussions on gender issues. Of these, 48% were girls, 23% were boys, 25% were women and 2% were men. We work with boys as they too are deprived, though the prevalent son preference gives them a preference at home for education and mobility. However with gender sensitisation, teenage boys become an excellent support group for girls, and together with girls in equal leadership roles, work on community issues.
The community residents (contemptuously called ‘slum dwellers’ though they themselves identify with the term basti for the community) are usually migrants from socioeconomically backward and very poor districts who have come in search of livelihood. Girls are affected in multiple ways as, besides the over arching gender and poverty issues many of them belong to religious and linguistic minorities. All of them have to deal with the orthodox mind set of elders as they still follow rather feudal practices of their villages.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

1. KASHMIRE DS HAWKER
ACTIVITIES THAT SHAPE EXPERIENCES
ELECTION MANIFESTO
FOR ACTIVITIES OFFICER OF
SHEFFIELD HALLAM
STUDENTS UNION FOR
2019/20
3RD YEAR BA (HONS) POLITICS STUDENT
2. "I WANT TO TRULY GIVE BACK"
SOME OPENING REMARKS
The City of Sheffield is a truly special place, that will always be in my heart. And a place through Sheffield Hallam, I
want to truly give back.
Hallam is just a small part of the City of Steel. And it really doesn't matter if you’re a Blade or an Owl, or study at SHU
or University of Sheffield - every one of us binds through that Steel within.
It’s that steely spirit that makes me incredibly proud to call Hallam my home of study and somewhere I want to serve
with a sense of honour and humble nature.
And it’s that spirit that makes the extraordinary students, of an institution that is really beginning to turn heads in,
shine within voluntary service – whether on a committee of an individual society, the way in which folk go about
fundraising for many a worthy cause and be involved with charities right across Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond.
That wonder is what has shaped my life, since first volunteering with City of Wolverhampton Council’s former Youth
Bank in 2011 – a project that got my love for public service and doing good right off the ground. And over 7 years on, I
look back fondly having served thousands of young people; whether as a Youth MP, Youth Councillor, an NCS
ambassador and of course through Hallam – particularly as Disabled Students Representative 2016-18, the Societies
Committee, the Committee of the award winning Hobby Soc and the University Mental Health Day Planning Group.
That 7 and a half years of experience, along with the passion which floods all of my veins, makes me determined to
follow in the same manner, of the incredible service of Bethany Howden who as a result of her drive, has transformed
all areas Activities wise and made the post one in which Hallam truly stands tall.
Whether its doing my utmost to increase the number of societies by another 2/3rd’s – with specifically wanting many
more academic societies being welcomed into the ever growing family or seeking space in the academic calendar, so
that Student Volunteering Week can be open to all 30,000+ students and whether it is giving Student Media the
resources it deserves; so YOU hear all the stories at SHU or ensuring Raising and Giving is as constant feature through
every academic year: my vision stretches right through the very real hope of things that leave a mark – and ultimately
change some people’s lives.
If my life was changed from the very first moment of public engagement, then I am sure others can too and that with a
lot of graft, co-production, creativity and a whole lot more, a lasting and defining legacy for Hallam’s Activities can be
laid.
Let’s give the whole of Hallam Activities That Shape Experiences - and to be given such an opportunity, in leading such
a mission, would be the greatest honour I have ever had!
3. THE JOURNEY SO FAR AND
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
From October 21st 2016 - the date of a successful By-Election campaign within the
Autumn Elections, I have been engaged and active as not just a Representative, but as a
champion for SHU Students concerns and dreams. Highlights have included:
Establishing a good working relationship with the Disabled Students Support team whilst as Disabled Students Representative,
enabling myself to put forward the voice of the many & having 2 questions from myself as the Rep within DSS's Annual Survey in 2018, that
saw well over 150 responses; brought around important feedback
Engaging with fellow Disabled Students through an attempt of a monthly Disabled Students Network - of which when it met, became a
platform for engagement with myself and a chance to hear directly of folks concerns and ambitions
Co-producing a joint Hallam and Uni of Disability in Sports Awareness Week in February of 2017 and the two held in 2018 (February 2018 which
was during my term and November 2018 which was after it ended) with SHSU's Sports and Physical Activity Officer, of which aims to deliver
Awareness, Inspiring Stories and chance to try out popular Disability Sports and in the process, engaging with Team Hallam and various
sports teams, as well as the Sheffield FA
Being a Member of the University Mental Health Day Planning Committee for 2017, 2018 and also 2019 - which organises events and raises
important awareness across both campuses, to mark the annual day led by Student Minds
Actively feeding back all my work to students, within various Student Union Zones and The Union Council—the highest decision making body
of elected representatives in Hallam Union, as well as members of SHU's Board of Governors
Maintained a strong social media presence throughout, to ensure that people know as full as story as possible and to give students the best
possible visual scope of the work undertaken
Always supported campaigns and events, of the 2016/17 & 2017/18 Officers and Part-Time Representatives; whether heavily engaged or
otherwise
Representing SHSU at National Union of Students (NUS) Events such as 2017 and 2018 Disabled Students Conference (Also attending 2019’s),
National Conference 2019 as well as at National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts Free Education Demo in November 2017
Worked in partnership with Disabled Students Committee, which aimed to run campaigns to make students aware of various disabilities
All this to note, enabled a natural step up on to NUS’s Disabled Students Committee as an Open Space Representative for 2018/19 and shows
what the strength of disability representation can and should be!
Awarded Outstanding Achievement to Student Campaigns at the SHSU Awards 2017, Outstanding Commitment to Inclusion and Diversity at
the SHSU Awards 2018 and overall Society Member of the Year at the 2017 SHSU Society Ball and Awards, in recognition of my work
Influencing the establishment of the Hallam Guild and the projects it seeks to supports
Being on Societies Committee 2018/19, as the Political and Campaigning Societies Representative & thus being part of a wide decision making
process
Finally, the Runner-Up, in the Presidential Election for 2018 and awarded Candidate's Candidate for the example I set during the campaign!
4. Increase the number of Societies by a further 2/3rd’s of the current total; 1 in 3 of those in
academic and vocational areas and thus work closely with the Facilities and all four respective
Academic Representatives to push the case
Co-produce the easiest, fairest and most stress-free Room-Booking system, which would allow
events and socials to be held on campuses – and at times which suit every group, rather than only
being allowed for things after 6pm
Subject to wide consultation, set limits on the numbers of people attending and trial a 1-in, 1-out
policy at selected and popular Union events, particularly those within the period of Hallam
Welcome and Give It A Go activities; which would ensure the safety and well-being of all students
Ensuring all Society Committees are the most equality trained yet and working with our Liberation
Representatives in making every society 100% welcoming for all Disabled (both Physical and
Hidden), LGBT+ and Transgender students and updating the Society Constitution to reflect the
modern day
Commit and require all Societies to holding 2 events per semester at Collegiate Campus, in
encouraging engagement and participation on as wide as scale
Make Student Volunteering Week 2020 the biggest yet, through collaborations in all areas of
Hallam and I will lobby to seek if every student can be accommodated 2/3 hours in the timetable,
within the week, to Make Your Mark – whether in a charity or an event in Sheffield
Co-lead a widened effort with all the Officers, in making all societies more Mental Health Friendly
than ever
I therefore pledge, that if Elected I will:
SOCIETIES AND VOLUNTEERING
The more than doubling of the number of Societies and a firm rise in those giving
voluntary service during there studies, demonstrates an ever bigger participation,
which needs to be responded to; through stronger opportunities which reflects the
current day.
And seeing the vibrant variety of things also increasing, knocking into the areas
which lack is also imperative, so voluntary service and the wonder of Societies
reaches all areas.
5. Target an increase of the overall amount raised in 2018/19, with Societies
being asked and encouraged to holding events and partake within Union
led activity
Create the Representatives Charity Fund, which will look to benefit three
charities close to our hearts through donations and events during the year
Highlight those whose efforts really make an impact, with the creation of
an annual RAG Recognition Awards; to take place during the annual set of
Awards ceremonies and Balls in May
Alter and expand the range of Awards given at both the Volunteer
Celebration Evening and Society Balls, in order to reflect the work which
takes place during the year
Consider bidding to host the National Society Awards at Hallam in 2020
I therefore pledge, that if Elected I will:
RAISING AND GIVING (RAG) AND
STUDENT RECONIGTION
Knowing of the scale of Activities which occur in every corner of Hallam, giving
back in celebration, appreciation and through fundraising to causes which bind
groups, couldn't be more correct.
The progress has been positive over the past few years, but I want to go the extra
mile and demonstrate Hallam as a force in these areas, knowing what it means to
many folk, to say Thank You and possibly even changing a life in the process.
6. Support and work with Steel Students (formally HMedia), who were
established in September 2018
Permanently re-establish H-News and make SHURadio a Union and
Media Department Co-venture, thanks to working with SHSU, the
University and Facilities in the biggest and best co-operation yet
Ensure resources for Steel Students are brought up to the best
standard possible, through the request of strong financial backing;
whether through the University or seeking grants from elsewhere
Giving volunteers for these groups a massive presence at not just
important Union and Uni events such as SHSU Elections, SHUFest and
Sheffield Varsity amongest things, but give a platform to highlight the
human stories that define the Hallam journey
Create a new and bold strategy, that not just gives Steel Students the
resources they deserve but ensures the permanence and presence it
too needs
I therefore pledge, that if Elected I will:
STUDENT MEDIA
Knowing the stories and all the developments, across every part of our institution is
critical in every sense, so accurate and up to date information can be shared, along
with the odd drama that plays out.
And in this time of history, seeing that there are students who already play there
part, makes me determined to give them the best possible platform and in the
process, makes all aware of the progress at Hallam.
7. Work with all charities SHSU has links to ensure such activity can be at the heart, of SHSU’s mission of
“Building a Legend”
Continue to be welcoming to organisations such as locally based NCS Providers, Sheffield Futures and
many others, in using The HUBS for events and thus showing voluntary service at its finest
Engage with Hallam’s Alumni scheme, to bring in former Hallam Students; not just for events, but to use
there examples to inspire Societies in the process
Maintain as strong as partnership with our friends at the University of Sheffield, with the strengthening
of Societies Varsity and jointly collaborating in a number of areas to share good practice and host co-
run engagements at the heart
Continue our wider work with the National Union of Students (NUS), ensuring SHSU has a strong
presence on a national scale and making known the benefits of such a membership to all students
Ensuring of accessible viewing areas at Hallam facilities for events such as Varsity, Election Results
night and the annual set of Award Ceremonies
Link into various city wide organisations on a number of projects, which could be beneficial to the
student population, including the UK Youth Parliament's Make Your Mark Ballot for all 18 Year Old
students, partnered with Sheffield Youth Cabinet
Meet and work with Members of Parliament, Government/Shadow Ministers, Sheffield City Councillors
and Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, to push forward students concerns and get them involved
further within the decision making process
Seek to get Hallam into widely known national events, such as expressing an interest in SHU having
delegates for the annual Lords Chamber Event of which I've had the honour of attending - and speaking
in twice (picture above is from 2016)!
I therefore pledge, that if Elected I will:
OPPORTUNITIES AND COMMUNITY
LINKS
If it wasn't for the voluntary sector and the chances it has given me since 2011, I probably
wouldn't be submitting myself for your service. Repping NCS at the Armistice 100
Commemorations & speaking twice in the House of Lords, makes me beyond grateful and are
great examples of what one can achieve.
Sheffield - let alone the United Kingdom has some extraordinary projects, schemes and
organisations doing some utterly outstanding work. And developing every link SHSU has, as
well discovering new opportunities will be a central mission in being in such a position of
power.
8. STUDENT DEMOCRACY, WIDER
UNION AND UNIVERSITY ASPECTS
Work from Collegiate Campus for 1 ½ days per week, in order to demonstrate
the presence which the campus totally deserves
Opening The HUBS up for the screening of more national events, including the
Superbowl, major Sporting occasions, Political Election nights and the
Eurovision Song Contest; all of which bring student groups together
Engage with the Welfare and Community Officer on a number of Mental Health
related campaigns – particularly around student Mental Health through the
Mind Your Head Campaign and University Mental Health Day
Continue to lobby Hallam and work with the Education Officer in ensuring
Wednesday Afternoons are kept totally free from academic sessions, for
Society and Voluntary activity to take place, as stipulated by an agreement
between SHSU & the University
Work with the Sports Officer, in seeing where Sports Teams and Societies can
both create good practice and creatively collaborate, as well offering support
for Varsity and Sheffield Disability in Sport Week
Support the creation of a Full-Time Liberation and Diversity Officer, which truly
represents Hallam’s ever growing groups of LGBT+, Transgender, Disabled,
BME, International, Parents & Carers, Mature and Post-Graduate Students
Always support efforts of anyone, wishing to reduce costs particularly for
Disabled students and those from low-income backgrounds
I therefore pledge, that if Elected I will:
The Hallam family is more than just a body of students wanting to play there part, as
the University's excellent engagement with SHSU over the decades have shown.
With all areas of SHU wanting to expand, such cooperation here is vital and working
closely with other elected people - to fully harver the key concerns and interests of
all will shape a lot of what I and multiple others will be able to do.
9. I therefore pledge, that if Elected I will:
• Publish all minutes, of every meeting I intend - that I am allowed to make known on a public
scale: so all knows what really goes on
• Hold a Semesterly Question Time, which allows student to effectively holds Officers &
Representatives to account
• Ensure all emails are responded to within no more than 6 working days
• Regularly tweet via @HallamActivity and post from my own public Facebook page: Kashmire D.S
Hawker - University and Youth Representative, Snapchat (kashmire.hawker) and Instagram
(kashmiredshawker)
• Ensure these updates aren’t just statuses of writing, but also include imagery, videos and other
important material to show when needed and demonstrate the Union’s creative force
• A fortnightly post via Hallam Union’s website
• A 2 Minute YouTube video every week, which informs the wider public of my work and actions
• And hopefully a few surprises throughout the year too!
ACCOUNTABILITY AND KEEPING YOU
INFORMED
Becoming a key player of a Multi-Million Pound organisation should give that person no excuses
for not keeping one and all updated what one does, as well give chances to keep those to
account!
Some Officers haven't been as informed as they should have/should be - something which must
instantly change. And possibly sitting at one of the five desks - with a mandate of possibly
several hundred students certainly wouldn't make me sit on my morals.
10. FINAL WORDS, HOW TO VOTE AND
GET IN TOUCH!
FOR INFORMATION: Sheffield Hallam Students Union are registered

Serving you all and creating Activities That Shape Experiences, would be utterly special and I
