Gender Stereotypes and Attitudes Towards Information and Communication Technology Professionals in a Sample of Spanish Secondary Students

In this presentation the authors (Milagros Sáinz, Julio Meneses, Beatriz-Soledad López and Sergi Fàbregues) examine young people’s gender-stereotyped beliefs and attitudes about people working in ICT. Nine hundred students from Catalonia (51% girls) enrolled in the last course of junior secondary education (mean of age=15 years old; S.D.=1.73) participated. As expected, the boys and girls held several stereotypical beliefs about ICT professionals. , These stereotypical beliefs described a masculine portrayal of ICT workers. Contrary to expectations, most of the students’ portrayals of people working in ICT were either positive or neutral, not negative. Likewise, and contrary to predictions, young males did not show more positive attitudes towards ICT professionals than girls. No gender differences were observed in the type of characteristics associated with ICT professionals. However, young females were more likely to offer feminine references about professions where ICT is the tool rather than the object of their work.

This study examined how different types of 3D visualizations (interactive 3D animation, 3D animation, and static 3D illustrations) combined with narration and text affect learning among 212 eighth grade students in Greece. The study tested an interactive multimedia application on methods of separating mixtures that was produced in three versions differing only in the type of visualization. The results showed that versions with interactive 3D animations and 3D animations increased student interest and engagement. However, the version with static 3D illustrations allowed students more control over their learning pace and placed less cognitive load on working memory.

Designers need to consider these generational differences in privacy concerns, social relationships, and how technology metaphors are understood differently by age.

Female are more supportive and approachable while male are more cooperative in the study. The respondents are continue seeking knowledge to be promoted or to have a higher position. Men prefer a hierarchical leadership structure because it allows for easier role clarity and delegation of authority. And it is not usual for male to have corrective actions in every undertakings. Women are more efficient and almost perfectionist in all actions to be done .Women are less competent than men and lacking in leadership potential, because of these perceptions, women encounter greater challenges to or skepticism of their ideas and abilities at work. Men and women are correctly predicting the differential experiences that they would encounter with professional advancement and are making sound decisions. It is also possible that women are overestimating the negative consequences associated with power, that men are underestimating them, or both.

Sexting is recognized as a common public issue as
well as a prominent issue among researchers. Authors
usually define sexting as sending, receiving, or for-
warding sexually explicit messages or nude, partially
nude, or sexually suggestive digital images of one’s
self or others via a cell phone, e-mail, Internet, or
Social Networking Service (Brown, Keller, & Stern,
2009; Calvert, 2009; Corbett, 2009; Dilberto & Mat-
tey, 2009; Halder & Jaishankar, 2014; Jaishankar,
2009; Walker & Moak, 2010).
The prevalence of sexting behaviors increases with
the spread of new technologies (Bianchi, Morelli,
Nappa, Baiocco, & Chirumbolo, 2018). A recent
systematic review and meta-analysis of 39 stud-
ies (Madigan, Ly, Rash, van Ouytsel, & Temple,
2018), conducted between 2008 and 2016, exam-
ining the prevalence of sexting among adolescents,
reported that prevalence of sending and receiving sex-
ual explicit content ranged from 14.8% to 27.4%,

and forwarding content without authorization to
about 12%. The prevalence of sending nude pho-
tos decreases significantly, and in linear manner,
across increasingly older age groups from 19 to 24
years to 50+ years of age (Wysocki & Childers,
2011).
A review of the literature clearly shows that there
are two different ways of “understanding” sexting.
One group of authors describes sexting as a con-
temporary form of intimate communication between
young people (Döring, 2014; Hudson & Marshall,
2018). Accordingly, their view seems to be sup-
ported by the fact that other authors state that sexting
is “normal” in adolescents’ relationships (Mitchell,
Finkelhor, Jones, & Wolak, 2012), or represents con-
sensual behavior in which both sides participate
without coercion (Hasinoff, 2013; Levine, 2013).
According to other researchers, sexting is related to
certain risk factors, but also negative outcomes. Sex-
ting is sometimes used as a tool for blackmailing
young people (Kopecký, 2014) or even as a tool for
revenge on ex-partners (Walker, Sanci, & Temple-
Smith, 2013).

This study examined the use of social networks among 1,487 adolescents in Andalusia, Spain. The results showed that most young people consistently used social networks, with the average age of joining being 12.5 years old. Two main motivations for using social networks were identified: social and psychological. No significant gender differences existed in frequency of use, but motivations did differ - boys tended to be motivated by emotional factors while girls were more relationally motivated. The findings provide insights into how social networks can impact social integration, citizenship, and education among youth.
Identifying Trends in Discrimination against women in the workplace In Social...
In collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Country Office for Indonesia, Pulse Lab Jakarta conducted a feasibility study to explore online data as a source of real-time signals of discrimination against women in the workplace. Keywords were used to filter public tweets related to discrimination, identifying four topics with significant volume of discussions (over 100,000 tweets over three years); discrimination in job requirements, permission for women to work, perceptions on appropriateness of different types of work for women, and the multiple burdens of working women. The study found that, using these keywords, signals were not strong enough in ILO’s priority focus areas in Indonesia. Therefore, the tweets analyzed in the research did not lead to conclusive results. While most of the identified tweets corresponded to discriminatory job requirements, weak signals from messages coming from directly affected populations may imply that it is common for women workers to keep silent about their experience related to discrimination and violence in the workplace for various reasons including fear of losing the job and facing further discrimination.

The Harmful Effect of Personal Technology to Students

Abstract
This paper discusses the subject matter that students are being harmed by their overdependence on personal digital technology. It highlights four main points to support this argument and offers one counter argument. It concludes by stating that in as much as technology does harm students, it has contributed to the quality of education.
Overdependence of personal digital technology by students should be monitored and regulated as they are adversely affected.
First, statistics report that three in four teens (74%) aged 12-17 own cell phones, tablets and other devices (Pew Research Centre, 2013). This is alarming as one wonders what time do they get to their studies and even socializing. This paper intends to analyse a set of empirical dimensions of the digital divide, based on the narratives of 17 individuals with low levels of schooling. Taking as references the constructs of techno-capital, techno-competencies and techno-dispositions (ROJAS et al., 2010), linked to Bourdieu’s social theory, and that of chronotope developed within the framework of the historical-cultural theory, a model of analysis is put forward, focusing on experiences related to the digital divide in which historical-cultural, axiological, educational, generational and gender dimensions emerge.

Explanation of the topic and how psychology is presented as a science.
The article chosen for this paper is, “The development of personality extremity form childhood to adolescence: relations to internalizing and externalizing problems.” The study did an investigation of personality extremity development across childhood all through to adolescence coupled with relations between personality extremity and consequential adjustment issues (Van den Akker, Prinzie, Deković, Haan, Asscher, & Widiger, 2013). For about 598 kids, or rather children, the fathers and mothers reported the five common big personal dimensions almost four times across the eight years, personality extremity was represented. There is a well-established validity of big five approach for the description of the child and adolescent personalities.
Studies have indicated that the big five framework has an application to children and the adolescents in the same manner as it applies to the adults. Therefore the study of the development of personality across the entire life span within one single framework. Sciences is based on empiricism which states that knowledge is obtained through our own senses, that is, hearing ,sight and many more (Van den Akker, Prinzie, Deković, Haan, Asscher, & Widiger, 2013). There is a contrast to this in the sense that existing views had knowledge to be gained singularly on the powers of logical argument and reason which is described as rationalism. So science connects with psychology in the sense that the article presents empiricism through knowledge gathering which is an aspect of science.

This study examined how different types of 3D visualizations (interactive 3D animation, 3D animation, and static 3D illustrations) combined with narration and text affect learning among 212 eighth grade students in Greece. The study tested an interactive multimedia application on methods of separating mixtures that was produced in three versions differing only in the type of visualization. The results showed that versions with interactive 3D animations and 3D animations increased student interest and engagement. However, the version with static 3D illustrations allowed students more control over their learning pace and placed less cognitive load on working memory.

Sexting is recognized as a common public issue as
well as a prominent issue among researchers. Authors
usually define sexting as sending, receiving, or for-
warding sexually explicit messages or nude, partially
nude, or sexually suggestive digital images of one’s
self or others via a cell phone, e-mail, Internet, or
Social Networking Service (Brown, Keller, & Stern,
2009; Calvert, 2009; Corbett, 2009; Dilberto & Mat-
tey, 2009; Halder & Jaishankar, 2014; Jaishankar,
2009; Walker & Moak, 2010).
The prevalence of sexting behaviors increases with
the spread of new technologies (Bianchi, Morelli,
Nappa, Baiocco, & Chirumbolo, 2018). A recent
systematic review and meta-analysis of 39 stud-
ies (Madigan, Ly, Rash, van Ouytsel, & Temple,
2018), conducted between 2008 and 2016, exam-
ining the prevalence of sexting among adolescents,
reported that prevalence of sending and receiving sex-
ual explicit content ranged from 14.8% to 27.4%,

and forwarding content without authorization to
about 12%. The prevalence of sending nude pho-
tos decreases significantly, and in linear manner,
across increasingly older age groups from 19 to 24
years to 50+ years of age (Wysocki & Childers,
2011).
A review of the literature clearly shows that there
are two different ways of “understanding” sexting.
One group of authors describes sexting as a con-
temporary form of intimate communication between
young people (Döring, 2014; Hudson & Marshall,
2018). Accordingly, their view seems to be sup-
ported by the fact that other authors state that sexting
is “normal” in adolescents’ relationships (Mitchell,
Finkelhor, Jones, & Wolak, 2012), or represents con-
sensual behavior in which both sides participate
without coercion (Hasinoff, 2013; Levine, 2013).
According to other researchers, sexting is related to
certain risk factors, but also negative outcomes. Sex-
ting is sometimes used as a tool for blackmailing
young people (Kopecký, 2014) or even as a tool for
revenge on ex-partners (Walker, Sanci, & Temple-
Smith, 2013).

This study examined the use of social networks among 1,487 adolescents in Andalusia, Spain. The results showed that most young people consistently used social networks, with the average age of joining being 12.5 years old. Two main motivations for using social networks were identified: social and psychological. No significant gender differences existed in frequency of use, but motivations did differ - boys tended to be motivated by emotional factors while girls were more relationally motivated. The findings provide insights into how social networks can impact social integration, citizenship, and education among youth.
Identifying Trends in Discrimination against women in the workplace In Social...
In collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Country Office for Indonesia, Pulse Lab Jakarta conducted a feasibility study to explore online data as a source of real-time signals of discrimination against women in the workplace. Keywords were used to filter public tweets related to discrimination, identifying four topics with significant volume of discussions (over 100,000 tweets over three years); discrimination in job requirements, permission for women to work, perceptions on appropriateness of different types of work for women, and the multiple burdens of working women. The study found that, using these keywords, signals were not strong enough in ILO’s priority focus areas in Indonesia. Therefore, the tweets analyzed in the research did not lead to conclusive results. While most of the identified tweets corresponded to discriminatory job requirements, weak signals from messages coming from directly affected populations may imply that it is common for women workers to keep silent about their experience related to discrimination and violence in the workplace for various reasons including fear of losing the job and facing further discrimination.

The Harmful Effect of Personal Technology to Students

Abstract
This paper discusses the subject matter that students are being harmed by their overdependence on personal digital technology. It highlights four main points to support this argument and offers one counter argument. It concludes by stating that in as much as technology does harm students, it has contributed to the quality of education.
Overdependence of personal digital technology by students should be monitored and regulated as they are adversely affected.
First, statistics report that three in four teens (74%) aged 12-17 own cell phones, tablets and other devices (Pew Research Centre, 2013). This is alarming as one wonders what time do they get to their studies and even socializing. Students’ overdependence on technology adversely affects their social skills which enhance interaction and communication with others.

This paper intends to analyse a set of empirical dimensions of the digital divide, based on the narratives of 17 individuals with low levels of schooling. Taking as references the constructs of techno-capital, techno-competencies and techno-dispositions (ROJAS et al., 2010), linked to Bourdieu’s social theory, and that of chronotope developed within the framework of the historical-cultural theory, a model of analysis is put forward, focusing on experiences related to the digital divide in which historical-cultural, axiological, educational, generational and gender dimensions emerge.
The analysis of the narratives by individuals with low levels of schooling leads us to similar issues arising from the digital exclusion of older people, especially women. This reality emphasises the role of Public Pedagogy in promoting literacy and digital inclusion (SANDLIN, O’MALLEY & BURDICK, 2011).

The development of personality extremity from childhood to adolescence: Relations to internalizing and externalizing problems
Explanation of the topic and how psychology is presented as a science.
The article chosen for this paper is, “The development of personality extremity form childhood to adolescence: relations to internalizing and externalizing problems.” The study did an investigation of personality extremity development across childhood all through to adolescence coupled with relations between personality extremity and consequential adjustment issues (Van den Akker, Prinzie, Deković, Haan, Asscher, & Widiger, 2013). For about 598 kids, or rather children, the fathers and mothers reported the five common big personal dimensions almost four times across the eight years, personality extremity was represented. There is a well-established validity of big five approach for the description of the child and adolescent personalities.
Studies have indicated that the big five framework has an application to children and the adolescents in the same manner as it applies to the adults. Therefore the study of the development of personality across the entire life span within one single framework. Sciences is based on empiricism which states that knowledge is obtained through our own senses, that is, hearing ,sight and many more (Van den Akker, Prinzie, Deković, Haan, Asscher, & Widiger, 2013). There is a contrast to this in the sense that existing views had knowledge to be gained singularly on the powers of logical argument and reason which is described as rationalism. So science connects with psychology in the sense that the article presents empiricism through knowledge gathering which is an aspect of science.

Different theorists in personality, have their definitions varying with a unique outstanding definition as a pattern of unfamiliarly unique features and permanent human traits which issues individuality and being consistent in behaviour. There are many reasons why studying different personality theories is important and that is why this topic was chosen for analysis. When the different theories are studied, we are enabled individuals to see each of the theorist’s point of view about their speculations on personality (Van den Akker, Prinzie, Deković, Haan, Asscher, & Widiger, 2013). All those theories developed on personality have their explanations on what personality is all about quite differently and therefore studying this topic is very critical to psychology students.

During the 2011 wave of protests, millions of citizens around the globe employed a vast
range of digital media to demand greater democratic freedoms and social justice. Although
mobile phones were widely used in all these protests, their significance remains unclear.
This presentation draws from both qualitative and quantitative research to shed light on the recent uses of mobile technologies for social protest, with Spain’s Indignados (or 15M) movement as the case study. The authors (Arnau Monterde and John Postill) argue for the importance of processual analyses of the new protests that situate the uniqueness of each mobile technology and “mobile ensemble” within a particular moment in the collective biography of a movement. Integrity aims to ensure that the actions of public officials and employees are consistent
with the law in order to prevent conflicts of interest and corruption. Conflicts of interest can lead to favouritism, abuse of power, discrimination, a lack of impartiality and objectivity, and, ultimately, corruption. Integrity facilitates appropriate management of the various interests at stake and, thus, prevents conflicts of interest that could lead to corruption in public procurement.
In this presentation Agustí Cerrillo examines the mechanisms that ensure integrity in public procurement through transparency, good management, prevention of conflicts of interest and control and accountability mechanisms. It also explores how these mechanisms are reflected in the Spanish legal framework.

Desalination has been seen as the cure for everything that dams and inter-basin water transfers

User retention is a major goal for higher education institutions running their teaching and
learning programmes online. This is the first investigation into how the senses of presence
and flow, together with perceptions about two central elements of the virtual education environment (didactic resource quality and instructor attitude), facilitate the user’s intention to continue e-learning. The authors (Inma Rodriguez-Ardura and Antoni Meseguer-Artola) use data collected from a large sample survey of current users in a pure e-learning environment along with objective data about their performance. In recent years, several studies have been carried out into the reasons why students drop out of online higher education. However, more effort has gone into analyzing the causes of this phenomenon than into trying to characterize students who drop out, that is defining what a dropout is.
As one of the
main findings of this article, the authors (Josep Grau-Valldosera and Julià Minguillón) reach a pure empirical definition, at a programme level, of students who drop out of an online higher education context with non-mandatory enrolment. This definition is based on the probability of students not continuing a specific academic programme following several consecutive semesters of “theoretical break”, and is highly adaptable to institutions offering distance education with no permanence requirements. The use of P2P networks for multimedia distribution has spread out globally in recent years.
Therefore, there is a strong need for a content distribution mechanism over P2P networks that do not pose security and privacy threats to the copyright holders or to end users, respectively. The existent systems for copyright and privacy protection employ cryptographic mechanisms at a cost of high computational burden which makes these systems impractical for distributing large files. In this presentation, the authors (Amna Qureshi, David Megías, Helena Rifà-Pous) propose and analyse a P2P content distribution system which allows efficient distribution of large-sized content while preserving the security and privacy of merchants and buyers, respectively. The experimental results confirm that the framework provides an efficient solution to copyright infringement issues over P2P networks, while protecting the end users’ privacy.Automated Prediction of Preferences Using Facial Expressions
In this presentation the authors (David Masip, Michael S. North, Alexander Todorov, Daniel N. Osherson) introduce a computer vision problem from social cognition, namely, the automated detection of attitudes from a person’s spontaneous facial expressions. To illustrate the challenges, they introduce two simple algorithms designed to predict observers’ preferences between images (eg, of celebrities) based on covert videos of the observers’ faces. The two algorithms are almost as accurate as human judges performing the same task but nonetheless far from perfect.

Assessment of the correctness of software models is a key issue to ensure the quality of the final application. In this presentation the authors (Jordi Cabot, Robert Clarisó, Daniel Riera) present an automatic method for the verification of UML class diagrams extended with OCL constraints. A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- 11. I. Our participants have gender stereotypical portraits of who produces and uses certain ICT tools and services (Sáinz, 2007) II. This research illustrates a social phenomenon associated with the historical production and reproduction of power and status in technological fields in Spain, as well as with masculine forms of ICT occupations (Rudman & Glick, 2010) III. As most of the prestigious and managerial jobs are related to technology (López- Sáez et al., 2011), this field continues to be a male-dominated setting where women tend to occupy traditional feminine ICT positions and play a secondary role in the design and production of ICT tools and services (Sáinz & Eccles, 2012) IV.
