2. CLOSE UP’S
Horror films mainly use close up shot’s as it creates atmosphere and it increases the
audience’s fear as it shows the facial expression’s of the characters. A theorist
named Goddard believed that close up shot’s were invented for tragedy. He believes
that close up’s reveal an emotion and it creates emphasis. It also creates suspense
as the audience are only shown the character’s face and not the background.
However horror films often use extreme close up shot’s as well as add a dramatic effect
to the shot. For example Hitchcock's extreme close up : the famous shower scene in
Pshyco.
For my trailer, I will be using a range of different close up shot’s such as the pictures in
the next slide. I will only be using close up shot’s for the main protagonist only in
order for the audience to feel more involved and feel the tension as she will be in
danger. It add’s onto the fear.

4. ESTABLISHING SHOT
The establishing shot is a very wide angle that is mostly used in the start of the trailer
as it familiarises the audience where the scene is taking place. I will be using an
establishing shot for my trailer, at the start of the trailer so that the audience will
be able to feel like they know the character already, as it shows us her home.
Below is a establishing shot from the film ‘The Woman In Black’ which is a horror film.
I would like to use this type of shot as this film did, this appears to be an extreme
long shot of the house.

5. LONG SHOT
Long shot’s is a shot that usually shows the entire human figure. They are also used
a lot in horror films, as horror films usually include death scenes as long shots
can be used for a tragic event or it also may be used to show the setting of the
scene. Extreme long shots which are generally the first scene of the trailer, as its
also called an establishing shot and these are often used in horror films , creating
suspense and tension as it shows the audience the setting.

6. HAND HELD SHOT
Hand- Held shots is the camera carried by the operator and this is commonly used in
horror films and examples of films that use this shot are The Blair Witch Project,
Paranormal Activity and Clover field. Traditionally it was used in documentary
filming as it creates a sense of reality and it makes the horror films be even more
scary. For example Paranormal Activity was using hand held shot’s and they use
this to film scenes that previewed activity in the house. The ‘shaky camera effect’
is supposed to make the audience believe that this a sense of reality and it
almost makes the audience believe that they are in the movie.
I won’t be using hand-held shots for my film trailer as it’s very risky.
