This presentation was given at an Altmetrics seminar at the UCT Research Office on 5 June 2014.
A previous version of this presentation was given during an OpenUCT Impact Analysis Pilot Discussion on 6 May 2014 (http://goo.gl/NWoJ7K). This discussion included a look at tools, methodologies and considerations for measuring impact of scholarly outputs, with a focus on altmetrics.
This presentation is a step by step introduction to ImpactStory, an online tool (by Heather Piwowar and Jason Priem) that helps researchers look at the impact of their research outputs.
You can use ImpactStory to get an idea who is bookmarking, recommending, saving and citing your papers as well as other outputs (e.g. software and blog posts) and where this is happening.
(Note: This is the version 7 of this presentation; due to several changes to ImpactStory a few updates have been required since the original upload)
Presentation held at the dutch digital author identifier conference 2013-03-14, to demonstrate the range of metrics services can come available to researchers, when the identifer infrastructure has been set into place.

SYNAPSYS Professional Profiling System for College StudentsParakram Mishra
College students are at the threshold of academia and the professional life ahead of them. Academia equips them with domain knowledge but may not train them on the psychological parameters critical to success in careers.
The Synapsys SPIA is an attempt to bridge this gap...not just building a career but more importantly, building a life.
An enterprising future for social psychology postgraduatesJenna Condie
These slides are from an enterprise workshop with social psychology postgraduates at the British Psychological Society's Social Psychology Section Annual Conference at the University of St Andrews, 2012.
In the workshop, there were some great entrepreneurial ideas & some very interesting discussions about the compatibility of psychology and enterprise. We might even produce a summary of those discussions - watch this space:)

What you get out of your citizen science programming depends on what you put into it. See some creative ways to think about the resources you can build on. We introduce a logic model approach to program planning, that will help set you up for achieving desired learning outcomes. This is the third in a series of workshop slideshows on integrating citizen science into informal science education programming.
Calculating how much your University spends on Open Access--and what to do ab...Heather Piwowar
#NASIG2020 presentation
Librarians are working hard to understand how much money their university is spending on open access article processing fees (APCs), and how much of what they subscribe to is available as OA. This information is useful when making subscription decisions, considering Read and Publish agreements, rethinking library open access budgets, and designing Institution-wide OA policies.
This session will talk concretely about how to calculate the impact of Open Access on *your* university. It will provide an overview on how to estimate the amount of money spent across a university on Open Access fees: we will discuss underlying concepts behind calculating OA article-processing fee (APC) spend and give an overview of useful data sources, including Unsub.

How to Calculate OA APC Spend for Your UniversityHeather Piwowar
Universities are hungry to know how much they spend on Open Access fees. This data is important to planning transformative and read and publish agreements, forming library strategy, and understanding scholarly communication on your campus. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been easy to calculate how much your university is spending on Open Access.
Learn how recent developments in data sources and tools have made this easier during this webinar. We will discuss the underlying concepts behind calculating OA article-processing fee (APC) spend, and provide you with paths to calculate the Open Access fees paid by your institution. ALCTS webinar.
Intro to Managing Serials with Net Cost per Paid UseHeather Piwowar
This webinar will introduce a new metric for evaluating the cost effectiveness of Serials: Net Cost Per Paid Use (NCPPU). NCPPU goes beyond the standard Cost Per Use calculation to exclude free content (OA and back catalog), incorporate ILL costs, and value citation and authorship. ALCTS webinar.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
