Descartes Ontological Argument For The Existence Of God
Section 6

Descartes Ontological Argument for the Existence of God
The Ontological Argument for the existence of God is an a priori argument that aims to
demonstrate that God s real world existence follows necessarily from the concept of God. In
Meditation V of Discourse on Methods and Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes presents his
version of the Ontological Argument for the existence of God. In this essay, I will argue that this
argument fails because necessary existence for a concept does not entail its real world existence.
Descartes argument for the existence of God relies on two key assertions:
1. His understanding of God as an infinite, independent being.
2. His claim that existence is a perfection.
In Meditation III, Descartes clarifies his understanding of God to be a substance that is infinite,
eternal, immutable, independent, supremely intelligent, supremely powerful, and which created
both myself and everything else (if anything else there be) that exists. It is important to note that in
speaking of God as infinite, Descartes seems to mean that God is infinitely perfect. He asserts God,
I take to be actually infinite, so that nothing can be added to his perfection. (p. 32) Descartes
understands God as a uniquely infinite and independent entity that exists by its own nature. By
contrast, all other entities are finite and contingent beings that must depend on another entity for
their existence. This

Wolf Gang
Wolf Gang; The Sheep in wolves clothing
What is the line between being civilized and tamed, against acting wild and savage? What separates
human intellect against animalistic nature? Humans have animalistic instincts, yet we fear it often
choosing to hide it calling it taboo or deeming it inappropriate to a civilized society. Famed
Psychologist Sigmund Freud once stated, The pleasure of satisfying a savage instinct,
undomesticated by the ego, is incomparably much more intense than the one of satisfying a tamed
instinct (Freud, ?) What Freud is saying is that satisfying a tamed instinct is artificial, compared to
satisfying something that is engrained in our animal nature. Animal Nature connects itself to the
short story The Company of Wolves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story is interesting by raising questions about what the savage instincts represents to a
community that is in the edge of civilization, in a location where nature and society clash. The story
in short represents Sigmund Freud s clash of human nature and the animal state (Id), the cultured
state (ego) and the self state (superego) and the representation of humanity in a state where there is
no discernible difference between humans and beasts. In the end the humans have the potential to
be as savage as the wolves in the right circumstances.
The circumstances that created this nature of humans as wolves are influenced partly by the
location in which the story takes place, the forest. Like the Original Red Riding Hood story the
woods are as ominous and threatening to the young female protagonist. Unlike Red Riding Hood
though, the story by Angela Carter is much more specific on the wolves and what they represent as
symbols of human barbarity. In the story, it is stated that, It is winter and cold weather. In this
region of mountain and forest, there is now nothing for the wolves to eat. (Carter,1085). The wolves
or savagery is created through condition, the influence of the location makes human harder both
physically and mentally,

Alison Wright s Influence On War
In this essay I am going to focus on how Alison Wright has photographed women affected by war
and conflict and how she has approached, created the story and how she has achieved this.
Wright is known internationally, from California, based in New York, a documentary
photographer, author and public speaker who works for National Geographic and travels the
world for the purpose of documenting endangered cultures, exile countries, people in poverty,
and issues that concern the human condition. After she survived an accident in 2002 in a Jungle
remote road in Laos where a bus she was on at the time was hit by a truck, Wright featured in
Outside magazine , Yoga Journal and National Geographic Adventure which showed her story of
survival. Alison set up Faces of Hope Fund what helps provide medical care and education for
children in the world who are in crisis or poverty.
Wright was influenced by work of photographers such as Lewis Hine, Eugene Smith, Dorothea
Lange, Sebastio Salgado and Henri Cartier Bresson. However, Wright s own documentary style
showed where she has worked on personal work projects, working for aid organizations such as
Unicef, BRAC, CARE and Women for Women, working close to the victims in war terror countries.

Diction In Poetry
1. How is diction important to writing and understanding poetry?
Diction is important part of writing and understanding poetry because each story helps create the
poem tone, mood, and all the poetic literary devices. Each word helps create a thoughtful heartfelt
short story. No word is put in a poem without a reason, in my poem I mentioned Jospeh colorful
coat because coat rhymed with boat. Poetry is about the diction and understand why they are
there, to reveal the hidden message within the poem. In the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by
Robert Frost the message about sinning and how that stays with a person. Robert Frost did not
use the word sin once in his poem but used other words to get his message across like Eden sank
(Frost 6) and nothing gold can stay (Frost 8). To me the diction is the key to poetry because the
author wants to send a message of the story to the readers, but also wants the readers to use their
mind to understand what the hidden message is.
2. How are literary devices used to enhance poetry and its meaning? (2 devices, including 1 sound
device)

You may start to think that prose do the same thing. Well, prose can tell people a story, fact, history,
making feel emotion, and make you think, but unlike poetry it has a deeper meaning and it has
something that the prose don t. Poetry is the literature that enable people to write about there true
emotions in a hidden way and people who read can talk about why did the poet put it in his poem.
What was the poet going thru? That is why poetry is so unique because a poet is able to unlock
their feels and put it on a piece of paper and turn it into something that has rhyme scheme,
metaphors, alliteration, and other poetic devices that can t be used in regular

The Legend Of Mulan By Mulan
The Legend of Mulan
Mulan was a legendary warrior, who disguises herself as a man to fight during the Southern and
Northern Dynasties (386 589).1 China was separated into North and South. Where North China
was under the control of the Tuoba Clan, a Mongol people not of Han descent.2 While the
Southern Kingdom was under the control of the Chinese people.3 It was during these time the
legend of Mulan can be interpreted in many different many ways across history. The earliest record
is the Poem of Mulan and Song of Mulan , who both referenced the heroine in the times of the
Northern Wei period (386 533). 4 These poems described Mulan as a heroine who disguise as a man

To make matters worse, the younger brother is not even at the age of fourteen yet. That only
leaves the mother, Mulan and her sister to take care of the family if the father leaves for war.
Feeling a strong sense of loyalty and love for her family, Mulan persuade her family to let her go
into military service. She was able to fit into her father s armor and successfully disguise herself
as a man and rode off to war. Along her trip to the nearest army base, Mulan was attacked and
bullied by other draftees. She was aided by another draftee by the name Liu Yuandu, who helped
Mulan beat up the harassers. Thus the two begin their friendship and ride off together to the
reporting station in Yan an.
Time passes, and by Act 4, we see Mulan as a Commandment officer on the front line fighting the
nomads from the North. She is described to be a successful warrior. As one of the troops
described her: We re already been at the border... it has already been three years. There hasn t
been a single achievement. Now take a look at that Hua. We all joined the army together. He

A Trip At The New World
Japes traveled for almost three days before he arrived in the new world, a relaxing trip as the
meandering trail passed many beautiful country estates a far cry from the bustling metropolis and
quite unexpected. When he finally arrived at the new hotel, he was surprised by the quaint
elegance. This would be the first time he worked at a Hilltop Hotela chain known for its
unparalleled commitment to customer service. He was welcomed to the hotel by a nice young
bellman, his new boss, however, was on vacation, just the same he was determined to evaluate the
lay of the land on his own. Although Japes served in hotelsfor a number of years he had never been

The lobby and front entrance were quite beautiful and truly fit into the town, the back of the
house, however, was in terrible disrepair. The cafeteria was all dark grey concrete with a small
salad bar set to the side. It looked like a prison cell. The laundry area and housekeeping department
were also all in concrete. The building was much older than he had thought, although it looked
almost new on the outside.
Japes entire focus changed from the hotel to the servers managing the hotel. He had been
enamored with the excitement in the activities of the guests and the servers with whom he
worked. Now, he was more curious about the managers he oversaw than the servers who interacted
with the guests. It was a tremendous change in perspective. Japes wanted to have fun as he
enjoyed in his previous jobs, but he also wanted to be a leader. His next introduction was to
Bobbin. Bobbin was the reservation manager who worked at the hotel for many years. She was a
happy server and possibly a bit of a racer at heart. She was quite active within the hotel and a true
friend to Japes. Bobbin lived in the town her entire life and knew everybody in the community.
This relationship gave him great insight not only into the hotel world, but also in the community.
The last server that he met that day was the front office manager Nod. Japes couldn t describe the
type of server that Nod was. At first sight he appeared to be a worker. He was

Japanese Gardens And The Garden
Japanese Gardens are a garden style that originated in Japan with design elements that are in line
with the Buddhist belief. Buddhist teaching is symbolized in the different elements that make up
the garden as a whole. Buddhism belief is used in the inspiration of various elements through the
use of water, stone, and architectural pieces. The Japanese Gardenthat used to break down the
broad scope of all the different elements is a Japanese Garden. I chose to use this Japanese
Garden as my primary garden since I have visited multiple times at the Dubuque Arboretum and
Botanical Garden here in town. In this garden, all the key elements of the water, stone, and
architectural features can be seen. In Japanese Gardens, water is one of the basic elements in
the water surface of the garden. This is the basis over which the whole garden consists. It
symbolizes the continuous flow of time and life change elements in the garden (5 Japanese
Garden Elements). There are several different ways to include the elements of water in a
Japanese garden: the use of a pond, water basin, and waterfall. A pond in these gardens is usually
irregularly shaped to reflect how a natural pool would look the mountains (Harte). The pond
within the garden symbolize vitality and how water is pure (Shinn). A tsukubai or a water basin
(as seen in figure 2), is a special dish with bamboo shoots, which is can be used by visitor to stop
and bend over to wash their hands and mouth. The symbolism behind a

One common trend throughout these unfortunate events is the way that the media perceives
African Americans since the beginning of slavery until the present day and age, and how society as
the audience connect and react with the portrayal of controversial events.
There are many information outlets today that help set the perception of Blacks in society.
Social media websites such as YouTube and World Star Hip Hop often hosts videos that show
blacks as animals. Viral videos, such as Sharkeisha , DcyoungFly s videos, POP Hold It Down , and
more, only portray Blacks as ignorant and violent. About four years ago it only took 220,000 views
to make a video viral, but today a viral video will have at least 1.5 million views (Fiorentino). This
is significant in that for every viral video showing Blacks in an unfavorable light, there are at least
1.5 million people reaffirming negative stereotypes and perceptions of Blacks today. There aren t
many viral videos that portray blacks that go to college and become doctors, professors, scientist, or
the president. Within their community, Blacks have grown and taken large steps from where they
were made to start. However, society continues to disregard these advances and return them to a less
than human status.
The media often presents Blacks in a negative light, especially when reporting to the mass public.

direct results of neurological changes that affect our sexual response and inhibits sexual pleasure.

perspectives in sociology that explain sexual problems and health: conflict theory, symbolic

Christianity and Liberalism by Gresham Machen-Machen Essay

The core of Machen s argument was that liberalism is totally different from Christianity, for the
foundation is different. (PAGE 67)
Doctrine
The foundation of Christianity is doctrine. Machen described doctrine as the setting forth of the
event with the meaning of the event. (PAGE 25) Christianity is based on the truth of the Gospel of
the life, death, and resurrection of Christ as the only sacrifice for sin. On the other hand, liberalism
does not have doctrine and the foundation is on the individual experience and feelings. Liberalism
is independent from standard or historical foundation of Christianity. Thus, Christianity and
liberalism are totally different kinds of religions.
Machen stated that the New Testament books are regarded by all serious historians as genuine
products of the first Christian generation. (PAGE 18) The statement merely could be false without
Machen s willingness to terminate as un serious all historians who ignore the validity and authority
of the New Testament. The argument of the New Testament authenticity is still conflicted between
in liberalism and typical denominations. A weakness in Machen s argument on Doctrine was while
Machen indicates that the New testament could be understood through the perspective of the
primitive Jerusalem church (PAGE 22), no supportive agreement was found what the primitive
church looked

A Near Death Experience
Sometimes a little near death experience helps them put things into perspective ~Annie Shropshire.
Near death experiences can be scary. Many people have had near death experiences. A lot of near
death experiences have certain things in common that occur during and afterward. Some of these
things are: change in priorities, time distortion, and fear. These are the three most common things to
experience.
Change in priorities is the thing that you hold more important than any other thing in your life
changes to something different. After Tom Benecke had his near deathexperience he saw spending
time with his wife was more important than a piece of paper. As he saw the yellow paper, the
pencil flying, scooped off the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window, sail out into the night
and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and then closed the door behind him. In

Heroin Negative Effects
What are the negative effects of Heroin usage? Heroin is a very addicting drug that if abused bad
enough, can be very hard to control. The user can learn how to control the thoughts or behaviors
that may have once led to the craving of the drug.
Heroin is a short acting opioid. In other words, it takes effect rapidly, however, it leaves the
bloodstream quickly. The NHTSA estimates that heroinwithdrawal symptoms start within six to
twelve hours of the last dose and it lasts five to ten days in total. There are dozens of symptoms
Heroin causes. Symptoms may only last a week approximately, however symptoms can be severe.
Some of these include bad teeth, cold sweats, weakening of the immune system, coma, loss of
memory, etc. There are a collection of other symptoms but those are the most common.
Withdrawal from heroin is not generally considered life threatening on its own. However, some of
the medical and psychological symptoms may have complications. For someone who did not
abuse heroin in massive doses, withdrawal may be more tempered and not last as long. When
heroin is abused, a rush of pleasure occurs, and when it is removed, the opposite effect happens.
Heroin binds to opioid receptors, which increases chemicals in the brain that are responsible for
feelings of pleasure. Heroin is an opioid drug that suppresses some of the functions of the central
nervous system. For example, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and temperature regulation.
Someone with a history of mental illnesses or addiction to other drugs may be more likely to
become more dependent on the drug taste. The longer someone uses heroin, how it was abused,
and how much was taken each time will all be factors in how dependent the brain and body are
to the drug. In the past decade, the CDC reports that abuse has doubled for Americans aged
eighteen to twenty five. In 2013, it is estimated that eighteen thousand two hundred people have
died from a heroin overdose, which is close to four times the number of heroin related overdose
fatalities in 2002. Heroin may be a cheaper alternative to powerful and addictive drugs such as
Oxycontin and Vicodin. CNN has reported that close to half of injection heroin users abused a

Australia s International Obligations Analysis
Australia s international obligations are framed by the United Nations, as this organisation is
paramount to enforcing international law and fundamental human rights. The United Nations (UN)
was founded in 1945, shortly after World War II, by a group of representatives from fifty nations.
Their motive was to establish a stable forum in which international issues could be discussed and
prevent wars between powerful nations. The power and purpose of the UN is bound by its founding
charter, similar to a constitution, containing one hundred and eleven articles which authorize the
rights and obligations of members (United Nations, 2017). All states are of equal sovereignty and
each state in the General Assembly is entitled to one vote regardless... Show more content on

Australia s international obligations extend extra territorially according to these agreements and
Australia is legally responsible for any contravention of obligations, regardless of whether or not an
Australian official was liable. However, the international obligations vary significantly between
Australia, PNG and Nauru, creating much difficulty in terms of effectively implementing these
obligations. For instance, Nauru is not a signatory to the Refugee Convention, nor do they have the
domestic legal structure to implement such obligations, due to the impoverished state of the
country (Dr Hathaway, 2016). PNG faces similar challenges in regards to the socio economic state
of the country and struggles to implement such obligations, despite being a signatory to the Refugee
Convention. Neither of these designated offshore processing states have the legal capacity to
uphold international obligations, thus creating great potential for violations of these obligations
(Archbold, 2015). This impacts the Australian government as it is difficult to regulate activity in
the regional processing centres and if obligations were to be breached, the government would be
responsible regardless of who contravened. The Hon Chris Bowen MP commented on this issue,
claiming that

The Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol has both established its place in history for climate

history of environmental regulation, its follow up, the Kyoto Protocol, fell short of the same

the different schemes. The type of politics, client politics, that followed the Montreal Protocol

Who Is Pierre Auguste Renoir La Promenade
Although La Promenade was not the title given to this painting by Renoir, this painting is partially
a tribute to previous artists whom Renoir tremendously esteemed. Pierre Auguste Renoir was born
on February 25, 1841 in France. Renoir lived during the Impressionist movement, which was a
French art movement from the 1850 s till around 1900. He studied under a man named Charles
Gleyre, who also taught skillful painters such as Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and FrГ©dГ©ric
Bazille. Monet, Sisley, and Bazille would later become some of Renoir s closest friends.

However, the man only has little pieces of sunlight streaming down on him. Dissimilar to the
man, however, the path is well lit and illuminated by sunlight. This leads our attention to the path
that the man enjoins the woman to follow. This playful contrast between well illuminated
subjects, and poorly lit subjects is enhanced further by the shade covering the man s face, and
the almost cartoonish depiction of his face. Renoir acknowledged no rules, and did not set limits
on his capability to extemporize. Renoir s work was a paradox. While he painted scenes that
were not generally painted by fine artists such as himself, he employed oil painting, which was
associated with the world of fine art. From the statements about Renoir that did survive about his
personal practices and conduct, it is sufficiently shown that he resolvedly rejected the idea of
yielding to common social standards. The span of different various social and artistic viewpoints
that Renoir embraced affirms his rejection to be stereotyped. Unfortunately, Pierre Auguste Renoir
died on December 3, 1919. He lived to see the post impressionism era, fauvism and expressionism,
cubism, and more. Even when

Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Horror Genre Essay
Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Horror Genre The horror genre has very set conventions and rules and
horror films have stuck to these but in Buffy the vampire slayer a new set of rules are written. Joss
Whedonhas given the audience another dimension to horror by subverting the genre, in doing this
the effectiveness of the program is increased.

unconventionally the boy gets hurt looking at Buffy. This continues through out the program with

By having a group dynamic this subverts the genre again, as normally it is a lone hero that fights
evil. In many cases it is not just Buffy that fights the vampires but the group work together to plan
and workout the historical facts on many of the characters that they are up against.
In season 2 Buffy and Angel are going out with each other although Buffy is aware he is a
vampires. This relationship shows that the difference between good and evil is very close with
many of the evil characters having human characteristics. The relationship between Buffy and
Angel complicates the genre, as Buffy is as strong as Angel so there is no patriarchy in the
relationship.
The use of dreams in Buffy the vampire slayer to show Buffy s conscious fears are very powerful
as it puts a question in the audiences mind that maybe her dreams will come true. The dreams that

Security Versus Privacy Essay
Security Versus Privacy
As a result of 9/11, our country has been faced with a new issue: electronic privacy. The terrorists
that attacked us used our own technology against us to protect their activities from our view.
Because of this, we are now forced to make a decision between two desirable things: privacy and
national security. On the one hand, our right to privacy will ensure that our personal rights are not
violated, whereas, on the other hand, national security would allow us some comfort against the
evil in the world. What are we supposed to do? This issue, however it is decided, will have
tremendous impact on each and every one of our lives. The ruling that the government makes

This would eliminate the sheltering of illegal activities and allow increased, tighter surveillance of
cyberspace. Another similar solution would be to give the government a back door into all
areas of cyberspace. Basically, that would allow them to see whatever they want, whenever they
want. Encryption technology would not have to be eliminated, but it would be required to
include a government ?back door?, so that any encryption code can be quickly broken if the
need arises. A writer for the Christian Science Monitor put it this way: ?people are willing to
trade almost anything for increased security, if they think it would make a difference? (Grier).
Overall, however, this position is held by very few people. The last solution is the one that is
generally supported by those who favor the right of personal privacy. They propose that
everything should remain as it is. There will be some minor adjustments to the current encryption
technologies, but it will be allowed to exist free of any back doors or restrictions. In a debate of
the new Anti Terrorism Bill, Senator Patrick Leahy stated that ?as Ben Franklin once observed, ?if
we surrender our liberty in the name of security, we shall have neither?? (Leahy). This is the
position that is currently held by the Senate on the matter of internet security.
The first side of this issue involves those people that are strongly concerned for our

Wal Mart s Core Competencies Essay
There is a growing body of literature that recognises the importance of Resource Based View
(RBV) in strategic management. This paper attempts to identify Wal Mart s core competencies,
applying RBV literature such as VRIO framework with supporting evidence from Wal Mart
Stores in 2003 case study. RBV suggests that each firm acquires a collection of capabilities,
which can be mobilised by strategists to gain competitive advantage (McGee et al., 2005). In
other words, a firm can be viewed as a bundle of resources, which are the drivers of strategy and
growth in a firm. When creating a unique product, a firm also develops a unique competence
(Mintzberg et al., 2009). Prahalad and Hamel (1990) ascertained that three tests could be used to
determine a core competence. Foremost, a core competence should provide a promising access to
a variety of markets. Second, a core competence would make a substantial contribution to the end
product in view of customers. Lastly, a core competence should be unique, hard to imitate. In
fulfilling the three tests, a resource would be a core competence of a firm. Moreover, to be a
sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), Barney (1991) stated that a corporation s resources
should consist of four characteristics: (i) valuable, in adding value creating strategy to the product,
not in the monetary sense, (ii) rare, in view of the business current market position, (iii) imperfectly
imitable and (iv) non substitutable. Furthermore, a firm s

The Arab Region
The Arab region has a conspicuous dilemma regarding countries inability to develop into
democratic nations. One would expect that because of historical events and transformations in
government policies that at least a few of the Arab nations would emerge as democracies. And yet,
none have been able to do so. There are several factors that may cause this democracydeficit in the
region, but one must realize that every country has its own specific and unique case. Arab countries
of the Middle East and North Africa have undergone several changes in politics but none that have
caused them to transition into democratic states. The Arab worldhas become a region where
corruption and authoritarianism has become the bulking features of politics. Analysts, historians,
and political researchers have strived to find a single solution or answer to the puzzle regarding
Arab exceptionalism. Arab exceptionalism refers to the current unreachable transition to
democratic rule in Arab nations. Every Arab country has a specific reason for its democracy
deficit but because all Arab countries have very similar cultural and religious practices and
beliefs, analysts tend to seek one feature they all have in common that may be the cause of this
lack of democracy. Algeria is one of the Arab countries that to this very day have not yet been able
to become democratic. Like many of the other Arab nations in the world, it is still identified as a
state that has a corrupt government that has proven to

Consequences And Implications For The Globalization Of Crime
1)Held, describes globalisation as the growing interconnectedness of states and societies and the
progressive enmeshment of human communities with each other (Held,2000) over the last few
centuries, human communities have come into increasing contact with each other; their collective
fortunes have become intertwined (ibid) His definition is useful because it points to the long
history of the globalising processes. Globalisation also has consequences that come along with its
growth and interconnectedness, Held et al claimed that there had been a globalisation of crimedue to
the increasing interconnectedness of crime across national borders. Globalisation aids in creating
new opportunities for crime and new means of committing crime and new offences for example
various cyber crimes. A principal driver that can be identified to explain globalisations acceleration
in the last few decades is technology. Information and communication technology has allowed
international trade and finance to become despatialised to a large extent (J. Pakes 2013) This has
allowed outsourcing for instance, and the emergence of a truly global marketplace, increasing the
value and proficiency of multinational companies.
Consequences of globalisation for the discipline of criminology has beneficial advantages but it also
comes along with disadvantages. A beneficial effect is that Globalisation may help in making
people aware of global issues such as deforestation and global warming and alert

Conflict In Doctor Faustus
Doctor Faustus is basically a play by Christopher Marlowe firstly published in 1604, almost
eleven years after Marlowe s death and at least ten years after the first performance of the play. It
is a story of a man suffering because of his unquenchable thirst for knowledge and power that led
him to his final damnation. It is a play of deep questions which concerns morality, religion and man
s relation with both the things. This play actually fulfills the desire of the supernatural beliefs in the
Elizabethan times. And this play also conveys a strong message to its readers that instead of being
greedy about something one should simply listen to their conscience and should then take a right
decision accordingly.
Doctor Faustus was a great scholar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
O they are means to bring thee unto heaven.
Bad Angel. Rather illusions, fruits of lunacy,
That makes men foolish that do trust them most.
Good Angel. Sweet Faustus, think of honour and of wealth.
In the first part of this scene, Faustus mind begins to falter. There is a conflict within Faustus as
to whether he should carry out his plan or not. This inner conflict is then externalized by the
appearance of the Good Angel and the Bad Angel. The advice of the Good Angel and the Bad
Angel serves to keep constantly before us the struggle which Faustus is facing and reminds them
that Faustus is in severe danger of external damnation. The problem of salvation and damnation is
now central to Faustus conflict. He is deeply concerned over his own fate. In each appearance,
Faustus is more influenced by the advice of the Bad Angel, and thus Faustus centers his thinking on
the wealth and power that he is about to receive.
In Act 2, Scene 2, Faustus is in his study with Mephistopheles. He cursed the devil, for depriving
him of heaven. Through petty logic, Mephistopheles proves that heaven is inferior to men. The
Good Angel and the Bad Angel enter repeating their old advice. The Good Angel tells Faustus, that
there is still time to repent and she tells him that may be God will forgive you for your deeds. But
the Bad Angel tells him that, as Faustus is a spirit now, God cannot pity him or can show any kind

Charles Taylor Doesn t Think So And His Almost 900 Page...
Why was it virtually impossible not to believe in God in, say, 1500 in our Western society, while
in 2000 many of us find this not only easy, but even inescapable? Was it really an inevitable
conclusion of uncompromising reality as Tom Hardy assumes? Charles Taylor doesn t think so and
his almost 900 page answer is an ambitious retelling of the process known as secularization. His
narrative style documentation of the massive cultural shift of the past several centuries
demonstrates the inadequacy of Mainstream Secularization Theory and the spiritual complexity of
our cross pressured society. The culmination of this story lends voice to a hemisphere s
subconscious, diving beneath the taken for granted assumptions of the Western mind to hear the
truth.
That underlying level of assumption is what Charles Taylor calls a social imaginary:
What I m trying to get at with this term is something much broader and deeper than intellectual
schemes people may entertain when they think about social reality in a disengaged mode. I am
thinking rather of the ways in which they imagine their social existence, how they fit together with
others, how things go on between them and their fellows, the expectations which are normally me,
and the deeper normative notions and images which underlie these expectations.
Charles Taylor definition of social imaginary is much different than a social theory in many ways.
He uses imaginary because he is speaking about the way ordinary

Legislative Branches Of The United States Essay
In the United States, we have a Constitution that divides our federal government into three
branches that carry out different jobs and consist of important leaders to help with laws and
other aspects of the country. There is the Legislative Branch, Executive Branch, and the Judicial
Branch. Although the three branches are all very different in what they can do and perform,
they are all still equal. We equalize these branches by a system we call Our System of Checks
and Balances. Legislative Branch is where the laws are made, and it consists of the Senate and
House of Representatives. The Executive Branch is where the laws are carried out. This branch
includes the President, Vice President and the Cabinet. The Judicial Branch interprets and
applies laws, and this branch consists of the Supreme Court and all the other courts. The
Legislative Branch checks over the Executive Branch by overriding presidential vetoes and also
by impeaching and convicting presidents in the Executive branch. The Legislative Branch
checks over the Judicial Branch of our government by impeaching federal judges and Supreme
Court justices. The Legislative branch also has the ability of confirming or refusing judges or
justices for elections for the Judicial Branch. There are many roles in each branch of our
government. The Speaker of the House is both the presiding officer of the House of
Representatives and the leader of the majority party. The speaker is also second in charge to the vice

U.s. Foreign Policy Decisions

mundane reasons. (Kaufman pg. 3). Here Kaufman begins to unravel the differences between
these two types of foreign policy. The extraordinary are the issues surrounding war, terrorist

as who is allowed entry into the U.S.. These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as
Kaufman argues the foreign policydecisions that most people know about and follow closely are
those that are extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3). Although
there appears to be strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign policy, that is not reflected
in American culture.
As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In today s world we

think this would lead to a more informed and educated public. While this could be the case in
some areas of study, it is not the case in foreign policy. Mead addresses some of Americans views

about American foreign policy stating one of the most remarkable features of contemporary U.S.

Intricacies Of Precognition
Intricacies of Precognition Divine precognition is a phase of clairvoyance that brings knowledge
of future events without relying on any physical senses. While clairvoyance is an awareness of
past or future events that happen at a distance, precognition is knowing about events that will take
place soon. For instance, you may be shown forthcoming events while you are in a dreaming state,
during meditation or via flashes of clarity. The Bible is rich with examples of precognition. For
example, the Wise Men were forewarned in a (precognitive) dream, not to return to Herod, but to
take a different route home after finding the Christ child. History is rife with astounding examples
of precognition: reportedly some surviving passengers, who were aboard the Titanic, experienced

something will happen. Also, precognition usually comes when we are in the dream state and
premonitions can take place anytime, day or night. Both involve heightened emotions and/or
feelings, such as anxiety, fear or as feelings of doom and gloom that keep nagging at your
consciousness. Let s explore precognitive dreams. Of course, not all dreams are precognitive, but
if you should have one, it will deliver a warning. There is a slim chance to change the outcome.
Precognitive dreams are often symbolic and may not be understood until the event happens. But,
there are literal precognitive dreams where the dreamer can see what is about to happen in vivid
detail as if they were participating in the

The Importance Of Use
Notwithstanding its prominence in the literature, a major shortcoming of the TAM method is its
utilitarian focus on cognition and intentionality, rather than affect and emotions. While this may be
useful for explaining SNS account creation, it is insufficient for explaining continuous SNS use and
engagement. Furthermore, the framework assumes that all users have the same preferences for the
same technical factors, such as usability. This view completely neglects that users may adapt SNSs
for their own idiosyncratic purposes that may defy the original intentions of designers. As a case in
point, Lu and Lin (2011) demonstrate that perceived enjoyment is a significant predictor of
continued SNS use even more so than other design based... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Other scholars have continued to criticise the over reliance on Facebook in this field of research.
Stoycheff and colleagues (2017, p.9) point out that 559 (84.3%) of the reviewed publications
were single medium studies that examined one SNS in isolation. This represents a burgeoning
literature on the effects of Facebook use, but we oftentimes forget to ask, why we are studying
Facebook in the first place despite the wealth of alternative platforms. Single platform often
studies run the risk of potentially omitting important distinctions between different SNSs in terms
of their social affordances, audiences and uses. Furthermore, focusing on one particular SNS
paints only a partial picture of how people use and are affected by social media (Kim 2014, p.2).
This may limit the generalisability of studies due implicit biases towards particular user groups,
usage patterns, platform policies and social affordances. Examining a social media platform in
isolation, as opposed to being part of a larger social media environment, may thus inadvertently
inhibit the reliability, generalisability and interpretation of results. Despite the wealth of studies on
users motivations for joining individual SNSs, in addition to recent scholarly work on the
gratifications obtained from each site (Papacharissi Mendelson 2011; Shao 2009; Whiting Williams
2013), little

Persian Gulf War Essay
The Persian Gulf War all started because of one country s greed for oil. Iraq accused Kuwait of
pumping oil and not sharing the benfits, and Kuwait was pumping more oil than allowed under
quotas set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, it decreased the price of oil, Iraq
s main export. Iraqs complaints against Kuwait grew more and more harsh, but they were mostly
about money. When Iraqi forces began to assemble near the Kuwaiti border in the summer of
1990, several Arab states tried to intervene the dispute. Kuwait didn t want to look weak so they
didn t ask for any help from the United States or other non Arab powers for support. Arab
mediators convinced Iraq and Kuwait to negotiate their differences in Saudi Arabia, on... Show

Still other countries made other contributions: Turkey allowed air bases on its territory to be used
by coalition planes, and Japan and Germany gave financial support. The primary goal of the force
was to prevent further Iraqi action, but most countries were aware the force might eventually be
used to drive Iraq from Kuwait.
The Iraqis tried to prevent and split the growing international coalition through several means.
They made it clear that their adversaries would pay heavily if war broke out, and they hinted they
would use chemical weapons and missile attacks on cities. Iraq also held citizens of coalition
countries who had been in Kuwait at the time of the invasion and said they would be held in
militarily camp areas in effect using them as human shields to prevent coalition attacks. Iraq
finally released the last of the foreigners in December 1990 under pressure from several Arab
nations. The coalition s greatest military concern during the closing months of 1990 was that Iraqi
forces would attack before coalition forces were fully in place, but no such attack took place.
On November 29, with coalition forces over whelming in Saudi Arabia and Iraq showing no signs
of retreat, the

Understand The Difference Between A Hoist And A Crane
To understand the difference between a hoist and a crane, one needs to understand what each is.
Hoist
A hoist is the machine that does the lifting. It can move in a vertical direction and runs along the
bridge girder. A hoist can either be fixed to a single beam (single girder) or it can run on the top
of the trolley trucks in between two beams (double girder). The hoist lifts or lowers an openly
suspended (unguided) load. The hoist runs along the girder (the principal horizontal steel beam)
with the trolley in the x direction. A trolley is a wheeled mechanism that the hoist suspends upon to
provide horizontal motion of the hoist along the girder. The girder is supported by the end trucks
(units consisting of the truck frame, wheels, bearings, axels, etc.). It can either run on the top of the
frame or under it.

The crane uses a runway which is the rails, beams, brackets, and framework that it operates on. It
uses the pendant or radio to control the movement of the end trucks, trolley, and the hoisting motors
and it can either be movable or stand directly under the bridge panel. A festoon guides a set of
power supply cables connecting power from the runway conductors to the crane components.
Differences
The main difference between a hoist and a crane is that a hoist can move in one direction while the
crane can move in many directions using the hoist, trolley, or bridge. The hoist can either be
individual or submerged into a

The American Dream In The Overnighters And The California...
Since the inception of this country, the concept of the American Dream has been driven forward by
men and women who believe that they can be as successful as they desire if they only roll up their
sleeves, take charge of their lives, and work hard to accomplish their goals. Indeed, it was this idea
that brought many foreigners to settle in this country in the first place. These types of men and
women jump at any opportunity to better their lives, such as when hundreds of thousands flocked
out to California in 1849 to become wealthy through the search and acquisition of gold. The
underlying situation at play in The Overnighters is no different from the search for the New World
or the California Gold Rush. The communities that form around such fountains of opportunity often
strain the surrounding areas, however, and the Overnighter community of vagabonds and strangers
that formed in the town of Williston, North Dakotawas no different, ultimately becoming a source
of conflict that forced the metaphorical moral hands of nearly everyone they surrounded. In recent
years, the North Dakota oil boom has attracted men and women looking for wealth and success
from all over the United States. In some cases, these people packed up nearly everything they
have, left everything they had ever known, and made the hike to North Dakota to seek a job in the
oil industry that they did not know they would receive once there. These individuals no doubt heard
stories of plentiful jobs with

A Rose for Emily 17
A Rose for Emily
A Rose for Emily is a story that deals with a women s sentimental illness caused by isolation.
Emily Grierson looses her moral compass, and her trace of reality, her inability to be loved, her
desire to be considered as someone important, was never accomplished. The author shows plans of
development; using characterization, symbolism, and setting. This is a very symbolic and animatic
story. William Faulknerpoints out his views of empathy towards Emily in the story when he
illustrates that Emily had an emotional abusive upbringing with her father. In addition, we see the
historical fiction and setting which reflects the racist times that was given in the past. A Rose of
Emily is also a symbol of a gothic, and horror ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emily s house symbolizes her state of mind, it was once nice, but then turns into the town most
stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps an eyesore
among eyesores (140) The breakage and liberation of her freedom held much imagery through her
hair cut. The poison represented revenge against Homer. The story shows archetypes of her
emotional state of denial for example, she told them that her father was not dead (143) . She
denies her father s death, when clearly doctors and ministers were trying to persuade her to that she
needed to dispose of his body. This is a great symbolism of her emotional attachment to her father,
and how it affected her state of mind.
The empathy and sorrow sets the atmosphere of Emily s fallen monument, her emotional breakage
into sadness. The setting of 1894 gives the historical fiction and the enveloping action of the racist
times in America, No Negro woman should appear on the streets without an apron (140) At this
period America still had a racial mind set, and where the rich were treated differently than the
poor. We see the atmosphere of her once upon a time pretty house, described as squarish frame
house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spices and scrolled balconies in the
heavily lightsome style of the seventies (140). In addition, this quote also demonstrates local color
fiction of the rural areas in southern America, and Faulkner s regionalism in these

The Moral Issue Of Vivisection
Paige Simone English Research Skills Atrocities are not less atrocities when they occur in
laboratories and are called medical research. ~George Bernard Shaw (1856 1950) Introduction
The everyday products we use such as toothpaste, makeup, and medicines have more than likely
been tested on an animal in a laboratory before being available for human consumption. These
animals suffer greatly and live lives of isolation and torture. They endure cruel treatment all in
the name of scientific research. Many people believe that these tests are necessary to discover
cures for human illnesses. This is simply not the case. There is a large amount of research that
indicates that animal experiments often lacks validity and do not stand up when transferred to
human beings. In addition, the moral issue of vivisection is one that we must all struggle with as
human beings. Mohandas Gandhi said I abhor vivisection with my whole soul. All the scientific
discoveries stained with innocent blood I count as of no consequence. and To my mind the life of
a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a
lamb for the sake of the human body. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is
to the protection by man from the cruelty of man. Scientists and all human beings alike have an
obligation to develop alternative methods of testing drugs and products that do not harm animals.

Macy s Business Analysis

Macy s is a mid range chain of department stores owned by American corporation Macy s, Inc. It
is one of two divisions owned by the company, with the other being Bloomingdale s. In the last 3
years, Macy s has made many changes to their brand. By implementing discount outlets and
changing coupon policy to closing 40 stores, Macys has been through a lot (Market Line, 2016).
In 2013, Macy s merged with LIDS Sports Group, and became an exclusive launch partner for
Apple s new iAd supported radio service (Market Line, 2016). Essentially, listeners will be able to

the advertisements very repetitive and shown to a mass market. Having repetitive advertisements
shown within the different medias gives the company brand awareness, and more cost effective, as
they do not have to create multiple ads for the same product. This also gives Macy s an advantage
to promote multiple products at the same and customers will remember which companies created
the products. Although Macy s is constantly launching new and multiple products at once, the print

A Feminist Film Theorist Who Is Best Known For Her Essay...
Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist who is best known for her essay Visual Pleasure
and Narrative Cinema. In this essay, she claimed that men and women are positioned differently
by cinema: men are the subjects who drive the story s plot, while women are objects solely for
male desire. Her theories were heavily influenced by Jacques Lacanand Sigmund Freud, while also
including psychoanalysis and feminism. Mulvey used Lacanian psychoanalysis to support her
account of gendered subjectivity, visual pleasure, and desire. She is also widely known for her
theory of sexual objectification of women in the media, or more commonly known as The Male
Gazetheory. As one of the most recognized theorists in the world, Mulvey s ideas and proof of
misogyny in film opened eyes around the world and female objectification was finally
questioned. Mulvey was born in Oxford on August 15, 1941 and studied History at St. Hilda s
Oxford University. She came to prominence as a film theorist in the early 1970s and wrote for
periodicals such as Spare and Seven Days. Her early critical works analyzed questions of
spectatorial identification and its relationship to the male gaze, and her works, especially her essay
Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, helped feminist film theorybecome a serious field of study.
Mulvey is currently a professor of Film and Media Studies at Birkbeck College, University of
London.
Between 1974 and 1982, Mulvey co wrote and directed six projects with her

Reconstruction Vs Republican Reconstruction Essay
The Civil war came to an end in 1865 after the Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to
the Union. The Civil War left a huge number of destructions along the way in the North and the
South. The North were required to reconstruct the Confederate States. And that caused the
appearance of the Reconstruction Era in 1865. It was a period in which Americans put the pieces
together . People were split after the Civil War, some wanted to reconstruct the Confederate states
where it is politically and economically damaged and the others wanted to have revenge against the
South because they caused the war that resulted with memories of death and suffer the Americans
had to endure. And that was a reason of the emerging of the Presidential... Show more content on

They believed in three things, first, they were mad at the South because they had caused the war.
Second, they wanted to punish them. Third, they wanted to help the slaves who are now considered
as freemen after the war ended. the Radical Republicans didn t like Andrew Johnson s plans, which
are almost mirrored his previous president Abraham Lincoln, they felt that he did not pay attention
to the major issue, which was the rights and protection for slaves, and because of that Andrew was
considered weak and was impeached in 1868. Even though he was considered a southerner and
should sympathize with the South except he was considered a racist for ignoring the blacks and
consecrating only about the white men.
The Presidential Reconstruction which was led by Andrew Johnson was considered harsh towards
the South. Johnson believed that African Americans doesn t deserve to vote, he thinks that they can
t manage their own life so they should stay slaves for white men. He believed that black men
should emigrate out of the states. Johnson returned all property to the Confederates who supported
the 13th amendment and pledged loyalty to the North States, but, he didn t return their slaves.
Johnson vision of Reconstruction was considered a fail because African Americans are still treated
badly, and Black Codes were established by white powerful rich men, which was designed to
restrict the free

John Lee Hancock, On the sidewalk bleeding by Evan Hunter and The last spin by Evan Hunter.
Our life experiences teach us that when we stop trying to belong, we realize that we have
always belonged, we have always belonged because of the actions we take but once we stop
trying to fit in with the world and stepped off the bubble of belonging we can see that we ve
always belonged. In the short story, on the sidewalk bleeding by Evan Hunter, The character used
to show the theme of belonging was Andy. Andy belonged to one of the top gangs referred to the

  • 2. Descartes Ontological Argument For The Existence Of God Section 6 Matthew Shields Word Count: 10/30/2014 Descartes Ontological Argument for the Existence of God The Ontological Argument for the existence of God is an a priori argument that aims to demonstrate that God s real world existence follows necessarily from the concept of God. In Meditation V of Discourse on Methods and Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes presents his version of the Ontological Argument for the existence of God. In this essay, I will argue that this argument fails because necessary existence for a concept does not entail its real world existence. Descartes argument for the existence of God relies on two key assertions: 1. His understanding of God as an infinite, independent being. 2. His claim that existence is a perfection. In Meditation III, Descartes clarifies his understanding of God to be a substance that is infinite, eternal, immutable, independent, supremely intelligent, supremely powerful, and which created both myself and everything else (if anything else there be) that exists. It is important to note that in speaking of God as infinite, Descartes seems to mean that God is infinitely perfect. He asserts God, I take to be actually infinite, so that nothing can be added to his perfection. (p. 32) Descartes understands God as a uniquely infinite and independent entity that exists by its own nature. By contrast, all other entities are finite and contingent beings that must depend on another entity for their existence. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Wolf Gang Wolf Gang; The Sheep in wolves clothing What is the line between being civilized and tamed, against acting wild and savage? What separates human intellect against animalistic nature? Humans have animalistic instincts, yet we fear it often choosing to hide it calling it taboo or deeming it inappropriate to a civilized society. Famed Psychologist Sigmund Freud once stated, The pleasure of satisfying a savage instinct, undomesticated by the ego, is incomparably much more intense than the one of satisfying a tamed instinct (Freud, ?) What Freud is saying is that satisfying a tamed instinct is artificial, compared to satisfying something that is engrained in our animal nature. Animal Nature connects itself to the short story The Company of Wolves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story is interesting by raising questions about what the savage instincts represents to a community that is in the edge of civilization, in a location where nature and society clash. The story in short represents Sigmund Freud s clash of human nature and the animal state (Id), the cultured state (ego) and the self state (superego) and the representation of humanity in a state where there is no discernible difference between humans and beasts. In the end the humans have the potential to be as savage as the wolves in the right circumstances. The circumstances that created this nature of humans as wolves are influenced partly by the location in which the story takes place, the forest. Like the Original Red Riding Hood story the woods are as ominous and threatening to the young female protagonist. Unlike Red Riding Hood though, the story by Angela Carter is much more specific on the wolves and what they represent as symbols of human barbarity. In the story, it is stated that, It is winter and cold weather. In this region of mountain and forest, there is now nothing for the wolves to eat. (Carter,1085). The wolves or savagery is created through condition, the influence of the location makes human harder both physically and mentally, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Alison Wright s Influence On War In this essay I am going to focus on how Alison Wright has photographed women affected by war and conflict and how she has approached, created the story and how she has achieved this. Wright is known internationally, from California, based in New York, a documentary photographer, author and public speaker who works for National Geographic and travels the world for the purpose of documenting endangered cultures, exile countries, people in poverty, and issues that concern the human condition. After she survived an accident in 2002 in a Jungle remote road in Laos where a bus she was on at the time was hit by a truck, Wright featured in Outside magazine , Yoga Journal and National Geographic Adventure which showed her story of survival. Alison set up Faces of Hope Fund what helps provide medical care and education for children in the world who are in crisis or poverty. Wright was influenced by work of photographers such as Lewis Hine, Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, Sebastio Salgado and Henri Cartier Bresson. • 6. Diction In Poetry 1. How is diction important to writing and understanding poetry? Diction is important part of writing and understanding poetry because each story helps create the poem tone, mood, and all the poetic literary devices. Each word helps create a thoughtful heartfelt short story. No word is put in a poem without a reason, in my poem I mentioned Jospeh colorful coat because coat rhymed with boat. Poetry is about the diction and understand why they are there, to reveal the hidden message within the poem. In the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost the message about sinning and how that stays with a person. Robert Frost did not use the word sin once in his poem but used other words to get his message across like Eden sank (Frost 6) and nothing gold can stay (Frost 8). To me the diction is the key to poetry because the author wants to send a message of the story to the readers, but also wants the readers to use their mind to understand what the hidden message is. 2. (PAGE 25) Christianity is based on the truth of the Gospel of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ as the only sacrifice for sin. On the other hand, liberalism does not have doctrine and the foundation is on the individual experience and feelings. Liberalism is independent from standard or historical foundation of Christianity. Thus, Christianity and liberalism are totally different kinds of religions. Machen stated that the New Testament books are regarded by all serious historians as genuine products of the first Christian generation. • 15. Heroin Negative Effects What are the negative effects of Heroin usage? Heroin is a very addicting drug that if abused bad enough, can be very hard to control. The user can learn how to control the thoughts or behaviors that may have once led to the craving of the drug. Heroin is a short acting opioid. In other words, it takes effect rapidly, however, it leaves the bloodstream quickly. The NHTSA estimates that heroinwithdrawal symptoms start within six to twelve hours of the last dose and it lasts five to ten days in total. There are dozens of symptoms Heroin causes. Symptoms may only last a week approximately, however symptoms can be severe. Some of these include bad teeth, cold sweats, weakening of the immune system, coma, loss of memory, etc. There are a collection of other symptoms but those are the most common. Withdrawal from heroin is not generally considered life threatening on its own. However, some of the medical and psychological symptoms may have complications. For someone who did not abuse heroin in massive doses, withdrawal may be more tempered and not last as long. When heroin is abused, a rush of pleasure occurs, and when it is removed, the opposite effect happens. Heroin binds to opioid receptors, which increases chemicals in the brain that are responsible for feelings of pleasure. Heroin is an opioid drug that suppresses some of the functions of the central nervous system. For example, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and temperature regulation. Someone with a history of mental illnesses or addiction to other drugs may be more likely to become more dependent on the drug taste. The longer someone uses heroin, how it was abused, and how much was taken each time will all be factors in how dependent the brain and body are to the drug. In the past decade, the CDC reports that abuse has doubled for Americans aged eighteen to twenty five. In 2013, it is estimated that eighteen thousand two hundred people have died from a heroin overdose, which is close to four times the number of heroin related overdose fatalities in 2002. Heroin may be a cheaper alternative to powerful and addictive drugs such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. CNN has reported that close to half of injection heroin users abused a ... Their motive was to establish a stable forum in which international issues could be discussed and prevent wars between powerful nations. The power and purpose of the UN is bound by its founding charter, similar to a constitution, containing one hundred and eleven articles which authorize the rights and obligations of members (United Nations, 2017). Australia s international obligations extend extra territorially according to these agreements and Australia is legally responsible for any contravention of obligations, regardless of whether or not an Australian official was liable. For instance, Nauru is not a signatory to the Refugee Convention, nor do they have the domestic legal structure to implement such obligations, due to the impoverished state of the country (Dr Hathaway, 2016). PNG faces similar challenges in regards to the socio economic state of the country and struggles to implement such obligations, despite being a signatory to the Refugee Convention. Neither of these designated offshore processing states have the legal capacity to uphold international obligations, thus creating great potential for violations of these obligations (Archbold, 2015). In the first episode Buffy arrives in Sunnydale, straight away she is under the male gaze but unconventionally the boy gets hurt looking at Buffy. This continues through out the program with the roles reversed; now the heroine is the hero. This is the bases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By having a group dynamic this subverts the genre again, as normally it is a lone hero that fights evil. In many cases it is not just Buffy that fights the vampires but the group work together to plan and workout the historical facts on many of the characters that they are up against. In season 2 Buffy and Angel are going out with each other although Buffy is aware he is a vampires. This relationship shows that the difference between good and evil is very close with many of the evil characters having human characteristics. The relationship between Buffy and Angel complicates the genre, as Buffy is as strong as Angel so there is no patriarchy in the relationship. The use of dreams in Buffy the vampire slayer to show Buffy s conscious fears are very powerful as it puts a question in the audiences mind that maybe her dreams will come true. The dreams that Buffy has are that Drusilla has killed Angel, these don t come true but to Buffy they seem very real as she saw what could happen. The vampires in Buffy the vampire slayer would conventionally choose the popular kids or people who have had sex to kill but the genre is subverted because they choose the social outcasts and virgins. Later in season 2 Angel kills Miss Calender who is a member of a gypsy tribe whom Angel had previously killed a member, resulting in the rest of the tribe being killed. As ... The terrorists that attacked us used our own technology against us to protect their activities from our view. Because of this, we are now forced to make a decision between two desirable things: privacy and national security. On the one hand, our right to privacy will ensure that our personal rights are not violated, whereas, on the other hand, national security would allow us some comfort against the evil in the world. Another similar solution would be to give the government a back door into all areas of cyberspace. Basically, that would allow them to see whatever they want, whenever they want. Encryption technology would not have to be eliminated, but it would be required to include a government ?back door?, so that any encryption code can be quickly broken if the need arises. A writer for the Christian Science Monitor put it this way: ?people are willing to trade almost anything for increased security, if they think it would make a difference? (Grier). Overall, however, this position is held by very few people. The last solution is the one that is generally supported by those who favor the right of personal privacy. They propose that everything should remain as it is. There will be some minor adjustments to the current encryption technologies, but it will be allowed to exist free of any back doors or restrictions. • 24. Wal Mart s Core Competencies Essay There is a growing body of literature that recognises the importance of Resource Based View (RBV) in strategic management. This paper attempts to identify Wal Mart s core competencies, applying RBV literature such as VRIO framework with supporting evidence from Wal Mart Stores in 2003 case study. RBV suggests that each firm acquires a collection of capabilities, which can be mobilised by strategists to gain competitive advantage (McGee et al., 2005). In other words, a firm can be viewed as a bundle of resources, which are the drivers of strategy and growth in a firm. When creating a unique product, a firm also develops a unique competence (Mintzberg et al., 2009). Prahalad and Hamel (1990) ascertained that three tests could be used to determine a core competence. Foremost, a core competence should provide a promising access to a variety of markets. Second, a core competence would make a substantial contribution to the end product in view of customers. Lastly, a core competence should be unique, hard to imitate. In fulfilling the three tests, a resource would be a core competence of a firm. Moreover, to be a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), Barney (1991) stated that a corporation s resources should consist of four characteristics: (i) valuable, in adding value creating strategy to the product, not in the monetary sense, (ii) rare, in view of the business current market position, (iii) imperfectly imitable and (iv) non substitutable. One would expect that because of historical events and transformations in government policies that at least a few of the Arab nations would emerge as democracies. And yet, none have been able to do so. There are several factors that may cause this democracydeficit in the region, but one must realize that every country has its own specific and unique case. Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa have undergone several changes in politics but none that have caused them to transition into democratic states. The Arab worldhas become a region where corruption and authoritarianism has become the bulking features of politics. Analysts, historians, and political researchers have strived to find a single solution or answer to the puzzle regarding Arab exceptionalism. Arab exceptionalism refers to the current unreachable transition to democratic rule in Arab nations. Every Arab country has a specific reason for its democracy deficit but because all Arab countries have very similar cultural and religious practices and beliefs, analysts tend to seek one feature they all have in common that may be the cause of this lack of democracy. Globalisation also has consequences that come along with its growth and interconnectedness, Held et al claimed that there had been a globalisation of crimedue to the increasing interconnectedness of crime across national borders. Globalisation aids in creating new opportunities for crime and new means of committing crime and new offences for example various cyber crimes. A principal driver that can be identified to explain globalisations acceleration in the last few decades is technology. Information and communication technology has allowed international trade and finance to become despatialised to a large extent (J. • 27. Conflict In Doctor Faustus Doctor Faustus is basically a play by Christopher Marlowe firstly published in 1604, almost eleven years after Marlowe s death and at least ten years after the first performance of the play. It is a story of a man suffering because of his unquenchable thirst for knowledge and power that led him to his final damnation. It is a play of deep questions which concerns morality, religion and man s relation with both the things. This play actually fulfills the desire of the supernatural beliefs in the Elizabethan times. And this play also conveys a strong message to its readers that instead of being greedy about something one should simply listen to their conscience and should then take a right decision accordingly. This inner conflict is then externalized by the appearance of the Good Angel and the Bad Angel. The advice of the Good Angel and the Bad Angel serves to keep constantly before us the struggle which Faustus is facing and reminds them that Faustus is in severe danger of external damnation. The problem of salvation and damnation is now central to Faustus conflict. He is deeply concerned over his own fate. In each appearance, Faustus is more influenced by the advice of the Bad Angel, and thus Faustus centers his thinking on the wealth and power that he is about to receive. In Act 2, Scene 2, Faustus is in his study with Mephistopheles. He cursed the devil, for depriving him of heaven. Through petty logic, Mephistopheles proves that heaven is inferior to men. The Good Angel and the Bad Angel enter repeating their old advice. The Good Angel tells Faustus, that there is still time to repent and she tells him that may be God will forgive you for your deeds. • 28. Charles Taylor Doesn t Think So And His Almost 900 Page... Why was it virtually impossible not to believe in God in, say, 1500 in our Western society, while in 2000 many of us find this not only easy, but even inescapable? Was it really an inevitable conclusion of uncompromising reality as Tom Hardy assumes? Charles Taylor doesn t think so and his almost 900 page answer is an ambitious retelling of the process known as secularization. His narrative style documentation of the massive cultural shift of the past several centuries demonstrates the inadequacy of Mainstream Secularization Theory and the spiritual complexity of our cross pressured society. The culmination of this story lends voice to a hemisphere s subconscious, diving beneath the taken for granted assumptions of the Western mind to hear the truth. That underlying level of assumption is what Charles Taylor calls a social imaginary: What I m trying to get at with this term is something much broader and deeper than intellectual schemes people may entertain when they think about social reality in a disengaged mode. I am thinking rather of the ways in which they imagine their social existence, how they fit together with others, how things go on between them and their fellows, the expectations which are normally me, and the deeper normative notions and images which underlie these expectations. Charles Taylor definition of social imaginary is much different than a social theory in many ways. He uses imaginary because he is speaking about the way ordinary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is the Legislative Branch, Executive Branch, and the Judicial Branch. Although the three branches are all very different in what they can do and perform, they are all still equal. We equalize these branches by a system we call Our System of Checks and Balances. Legislative Branch is where the laws are made, and it consists of the Senate and House of Representatives. The Executive Branch is where the laws are carried out. This branch includes the President, Vice President and the Cabinet. The Judicial Branch interprets and applies laws, and this branch consists of the Supreme Court and all the other courts. The mundane, is as simple as the labels on your clothing, but as complex as who is allowed entry into the U.S.. These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as Kaufman argues the foreign policydecisions that most people know about and follow closely are those that are extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3). Although there appears to be strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign policy, that is not reflected in American culture. As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In today s world we have more access to information than we have ever had in the history of the world. One would think this would lead to a more informed and educated public. While this could be the case in some areas of study, it is not the case in foreign policy. Mead addresses some of Americans views and the role they play throughout history. Also, precognition usually comes when we are in the dream state and premonitions can take place anytime, day or night. Both involve heightened emotions and/or feelings, such as anxiety, fear or as feelings of doom and gloom that keep nagging at your consciousness. Let s explore precognitive dreams. Of course, not all dreams are precognitive, but if you should have one, it will deliver a warning. There is a slim chance to change the outcome. Precognitive dreams are often symbolic and may not be understood until the event happens. But, there are literal precognitive dreams where the dreamer can see what is about to happen in vivid detail as if they were participating in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. The Importance Of Use Notwithstanding its prominence in the literature, a major shortcoming of the TAM method is its utilitarian focus on cognition and intentionality, rather than affect and emotions. While this may be useful for explaining SNS account creation, it is insufficient for explaining continuous SNS use and engagement. Furthermore, the framework assumes that all users have the same preferences for the same technical factors, such as usability. This view completely neglects that users may adapt SNSs for their own idiosyncratic purposes that may defy the original intentions of designers. As a case in point, Lu and Lin (2011) demonstrate that perceived enjoyment is a significant predictor of continued SNS use even more so than other design based... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other scholars have continued to criticise the over reliance on Facebook in this field of research. Stoycheff and colleagues (2017, p.9) point out that 559 (84.3%) of the reviewed publications were single medium studies that examined one SNS in isolation. This represents a burgeoning literature on the effects of Facebook use, but we oftentimes forget to ask, why we are studying Facebook in the first place despite the wealth of alternative platforms. Single platform often studies run the risk of potentially omitting important distinctions between different SNSs in terms of their social affordances, audiences and uses. Furthermore, focusing on one particular SNS paints only a partial picture of how people use and are affected by social media (Kim 2014, p.2). This may limit the generalisability of studies due implicit biases towards particular user groups, usage patterns, platform policies and social affordances. Examining a social media platform in isolation, as opposed to being part of a larger social media environment, may thus inadvertently inhibit the reliability, generalisability and interpretation of results. Despite the wealth of studies on users motivations for joining individual SNSs, in addition to recent scholarly work on the gratifications obtained from each site (Papacharissi Mendelson 2011; Shao 2009; Whiting Williams 2013), little ... Iraq accused Kuwait of pumping oil and not sharing the benfits, and Kuwait was pumping more oil than allowed under quotas set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, it decreased the price of oil, Iraq s main export. Iraqs complaints against Kuwait grew more and more harsh, but they were mostly about money. When Iraqi forces began to assemble near the Kuwaiti border in the summer of 1990, several Arab states tried to intervene the dispute. Still other countries made other contributions: Turkey allowed air bases on its territory to be used by coalition planes, and Japan and Germany gave financial support. The primary goal of the force was to prevent further Iraqi action, but most countries were aware the force might eventually be used to drive Iraq from Kuwait. The Iraqis tried to prevent and split the growing international coalition through several means. They made it clear that their adversaries would pay heavily if war broke out, and they hinted they would use chemical weapons and missile attacks on cities. Iraq also held citizens of coalition countries who had been in Kuwait at the time of the invasion and said they would be held in militarily camp areas in effect using them as human shields to prevent coalition attacks. Iraq finally released the last of the foreigners in December 1990 under pressure from several Arab nations. The coalition s greatest military concern during the closing months of 1990 was that Iraqi forces would attack before coalition forces were fully in place, but no such attack took place. • 48. Understand The Difference Between A Hoist And A Crane To understand the difference between a hoist and a crane, one needs to understand what each is. Hoist A hoist is the machine that does the lifting. It can move in a vertical direction and runs along the bridge girder. A hoist can either be fixed to a single beam (single girder) or it can run on the top of the trolley trucks in between two beams (double girder). The hoist lifts or lowers an openly suspended (unguided) load. The hoist runs along the girder (the principal horizontal steel beam) with the trolley in the x direction. A trolley is a wheeled mechanism that the hoist suspends upon to provide horizontal motion of the hoist along the girder. • 49. The American Dream In The Overnighters And The California... Since the inception of this country, the concept of the American Dream has been driven forward by men and women who believe that they can be as successful as they desire if they only roll up their sleeves, take charge of their lives, and work hard to accomplish their goals. Indeed, it was this idea that brought many foreigners to settle in this country in the first place. These types of men and women jump at any opportunity to better their lives, such as when hundreds of thousands flocked out to California in 1849 to become wealthy through the search and acquisition of gold. The underlying situation at play in The Overnighters is no different from the search for the New World or the California Gold Rush. The communities that form around such fountains of opportunity often strain the surrounding areas, however, and the Overnighter community of vagabonds and strangers that formed in the town of Williston, North Dakotawas no different, ultimately becoming a source of conflict that forced the metaphorical moral hands of nearly everyone they surrounded. In recent years, the North Dakota oil boom has attracted men and women looking for wealth and success from all over the United States. In some cases, these people packed up nearly everything they have, left everything they had ever known, and made the hike to North Dakota to seek a job in the oil industry that they did not know they would receive once there. These individuals no doubt heard stories of plentiful jobs with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Emily Grierson looses her moral compass, and her trace of reality, her inability to be loved, her desire to be considered as someone important, was never accomplished. The author shows plans of development; using characterization, symbolism, and setting. This is a very symbolic and animatic story. William Faulknerpoints out his views of empathy towards Emily in the story when he illustrates that Emily had an emotional abusive upbringing with her father. In addition, we see the historical fiction and setting which reflects the racist times that was given in the past. A Rose of Emily is also a symbol of a gothic, and horror ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emily s house symbolizes her state of mind, it was once nice, but then turns into the town most stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps an eyesore among eyesores (140) The breakage and liberation of her freedom held much imagery through her hair cut. The poison represented revenge against Homer. The story shows archetypes of her emotional state of denial for example, she told them that her father was not dead (143) . She denies her father s death, when clearly doctors and ministers were trying to persuade her to that she needed to dispose of his body. This is a great symbolism of her emotional attachment to her father, and how it affected her state of mind. The empathy and sorrow sets the atmosphere of Emily s fallen monument, her emotional breakage into sadness. The setting of 1894 gives the historical fiction and the enveloping action of the racist times in America, No Negro woman should appear on the streets without an apron (140) At this period America still had a racial mind set, and where the rich were treated differently than the poor. We see the atmosphere of her once upon a time pretty house, described as squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spices and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies (140). • 51. The Moral Issue Of Vivisection Paige Simone English Research Skills Atrocities are not less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called medical research. ~George Bernard Shaw (1856 1950) Introduction The everyday products we use such as toothpaste, makeup, and medicines have more than likely been tested on an animal in a laboratory before being available for human consumption. These animals suffer greatly and live lives of isolation and torture. They endure cruel treatment all in the name of scientific research. Many people believe that these tests are necessary to discover cures for human illnesses. This is simply not the case. There is a large amount of research that indicates that animal experiments often lacks validity and do not stand up when transferred to human beings. In addition, the moral issue of vivisection is one that we must all struggle with as human beings. Mohandas Gandhi said I abhor vivisection with my whole soul. All the scientific discoveries stained with innocent blood I count as of no consequence. and To my mind the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to the protection by man from the cruelty of man. Scientists and all human beings alike have an obligation to develop alternative methods of testing drugs and products that do not harm animals. Paige Simone English Research Skills ... • 53. A Feminist Film Theorist Who Is Best Known For Her Essay... Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist who is best known for her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. In this essay, she claimed that men and women are positioned differently by cinema: men are the subjects who drive the story s plot, while women are objects solely for male desire. Her theories were heavily influenced by Jacques Lacanand Sigmund Freud, while also including psychoanalysis and feminism. Mulvey used Lacanian psychoanalysis to support her account of gendered subjectivity, visual pleasure, and desire. She is also widely known for her theory of sexual objectification of women in the media, or more commonly known as The Male Gazetheory. As one of the most recognized theorists in the world, Mulvey s ideas and proof of misogyny in film opened eyes around the world and female objectification was finally questioned. Mulvey was born in Oxford on August 15, 1941 and studied History at St. Hilda s Oxford University. She came to prominence as a film theorist in the early 1970s and wrote for periodicals such as Spare and Seven Days. Her early critical works analyzed questions of spectatorial identification and its relationship to the male gaze, and her works, especially her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, helped feminist film theorybecome a serious field of study. And that caused the appearance of the Reconstruction Era in 1865. It was a period in which Americans put the pieces together .
