TYPES OF DRIVE SYSTEMS
 Real wheel drive.
 Front wheel drive.
 Four wheel drive.
 All wheel drive.
REAR WHEEL DRIVE
 The transmission is usually mounted to the back of the
engine.
 Power flow on this system is simple and straight forward
going from the engine, through the torque converter,then
through the transmission and the drive shaft until it reaches
the final drive where it is split and sent to the two rear
wheels.
 Example of rear wheel: BMW all series cars except the x-drive
varient.
REAR WHEEL DRIVE
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
 On front wheel drive car,the transmission is usually combined with the final
drive.
 Transaxle: It is the device set up in the transmission gear box, clutch,final
drive, combined into a single unit.
 Front wheel drive layouts are those in which the front wheels of the car are
driven. The most popular layout used in cars today is the front engines,front
wheel drive, whith the engine in front axle, driving the front wheels.
 This layout is typically choosen for its compact packaging.
 Front axles are connected directly to the transaxle and provide power to the
front wheels
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
Four wheel drive – 4WD
 Part-time 4WD : Typically systems that operate in two wheel drive
until the driver commands the four wheel drive operation.
 The torque is divided (50/50 fixed) between the front and rear drive
shaft.
 Selection of two wheel drive or four wheel drive is done by a shifter
and electric switch.
4WD
ALL WHEEL DRIVE - AWD
 Difficult to clearly define the difference between the
4WD and AWD.
 AWD is nothing but the Full time 4WD,which
constantly provide power to all four wheels but it
does not give the driver the option of 2WD or 4WD.
VTEC TECHNOLOGY
This technology is first introduced by Honda Research and development
team in their HONDA CIVIC MODEL – a dream car for youngs.
 This technology is nothing but the activation of bigger sized cams
for both air and fuel valves after the vehicle achieves a particular speed
especially 1200rpm.
 While on a normal pushing of accelerator a normal sized cam is employed ,
but when the driver is in need of more power at high speed,the larger cam is
deployed.This allows more fuel and air in to the engine producing more torque
 This therby counterbalance a main drawback in higher gears i.e producing lower torque.

WHEEL ALLIGNMENT
The alignment of wheels is an important parameter deciding the safety, cornering
capability and some comfort affecting factors.
Types of wheel alignment
 CASTER ANGLE
 CAMBER ANGLE
 TOE ANGLE
WHEEL ALIGNMENT
 CASTER ANGLE
IT IS THE INTENTIONAL MISALIGNMENT OF WHEEL AXIS WITH VERTICAL.IT HELLPS IN
AUTOMATIC RETRACING OF WHEEL BACK TO ITS POSITION ONCE THE DRIVER STRESSED THE
STEERING FOR A TURN AND RELEASED AFTERWARDS.
 CAMBER ANGLE
IT REFER TO THE INTENTIONAL TILT OF THR FRONT TIRES RESULTS IN GREATER COMFORT AND
EASE WHILE CORNERING TRANSFERRING THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCE VRTICALLY AVAOIDING THE
SHEAR FORCE WHILE TURNING.
 TOE ANGLE
TOE OUT AND TOE IN IS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE FRONT
WHEEL, WHICH PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN SUSPENSION COMPENSATING THE FRICTION DUE TO
CONTINUOUS PUSH FROM REAR WHEEL IN RWD.
DIFFERENTIATIONS
Turbo charger
Turbo charger is a mimicried technique from airplanes that need sufficient
oxygen supply at higher altitudes. This method to eliminate insufficiency at
greater altitudes is utilized for higher performance at sea level.
 The main objective of this is squeezing out the highest possible efficiency from the
engine.
 This supplies large amount of compressed air to the engine leading to greater power
and torque.
 The turbo charger mounted in the bonnet takes air from the atmosphere,compresses it
and transferring it to engine. Since compressed air contains more amount of oxygen,it
leads to complete combustion of fuel providing decent mileage.
