Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by Shigella bacteria, which invade and destroy intestinal epithelial cells. This leads to inflammation and damage of the intestines and symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloody stool. The disease ranges from mild to severe and can become chronic with recurring symptoms. Treatment involves rehydration, antibiotics in moderate to severe cases, and prevention through hygiene, sanitation and control of bacterial carriers.
