Shetland sheep feed mainly on grass, food pellets or hay. They evolved from Northern European short-tailed sheep brought to the Shetland Islands by Vikings around 1000 years ago. Shetland sheep are similar to Icelandic sheep but smaller, and their long wool with undercoat provides insulation from cold, wet weather.
