Reinforcing Red2Blue
Proactively focusing on Red2Blue skills will support and improve the mindset elements of performance.
While there is a lot of attention given to training for specific processes and core functional skills, your Red2Blue
coaching follow up sessions will fill the gap around specific training for mindset.
Your clients should have been introduced to Red2Blue so that they know what it is, how to use it, and how to
practice it with specific tools and exercises (refer to Red2Blue Certified Coach Lesson Plans).
Your coaching should focus on refreshing this knowledge and enthusiasm for continued improvement through
ongoing application of the tools and exercises.
It should also be proactively structured to address current situations and challenges.
The following slides outline a suggested focus for how to structure your sessions.
Deciding and agreeing a regular cadence with your clients and/or teams will support the discipline required to
deliberately take time for this work.

Recap on the basic concept
Refresh on what Red2Blue is
• 0---100
• Structure / Skillset / Mindset
• Bad day
• Skill vs Problem
• Control of attention
• Red2Blue Map
• Discussion and reflection
• How do they use it?
• What have the observed?
• What help do they need?
Practice using short scenarios
Lead group discussion and
facilitate enhanced
understanding with short
scenarios*
• What is happening in terms of
red head / blue head?
• How does it effect
performance?
• What could they do to adapt in
the moment?
• What could they do in
preparation to mitigate or
avoid?
*See end slides for examples
Practice using the tools
Lead and facilitate reviews
using the tools
• Control Circles
• Complete as an individual or team within a specific
context or to address a specific problem
• What ifs
• Complete to address upcoming events and how to
prepare for and rehearse mental “what if” strategies to
become familiar with the feeling of pressure
• Recognition Template
• Continue to complete and share examples of
observations of what people can recognise as Red head /
Blue head responses and how to have rituals and routines
in place to help shift from Red to Blue
• Priority Planner
• Keep working a one page overview to establish clarity
and priority focus and ensure real meaning around
overall purpose, This is important for ‘zooming out’
• Mental Skills X Check
• Keep driving regular use to establish routines around
review process. It is important mentality is checked in the
same way other elements are. It helps remind people to
review from the blue side rather than get defensive or
avoid scrutiny. It helps people take ownership and stay
intact / keep perspective around areas to improve.

Using the basic process to reflect on mindset elements of performance
Mindset is not unconnected from Structures and core Skills, and even though it can be addressed in isolation, it
is useful to always start with a broader diagnosis and discussion first.
Repeatable Process
• Dialogue and diagnosis 0--------------100
• Discuss the topic / issue / ask questions or set the context. Where does the issue sit on the performance line? Get individuals and teams
to discuss the issue or gap or how they are doing vs where they want to be on the 0 ---100 line
• Draw the Performance triangle and broaden the discussion:
• What are the various issues? What do they think they need to work on? What is working well?
• Using the Control Circles, prioritise the focus areas.
• Agree on actions that can be taken.
• Give them something specific to do (e.g. work on a Red2Blue attention exercise, complete their Recognition tool, etc.).

Preparing for big moments
Practice preparing teams and individuals for big moments of pressure (e.g.. ‘with a sales professional or team in
advance of a critical client meeting, launch of new initiatives or changes in directions and strategy.)
These sessions can be facilitated using any of the tools – Control Circles, Recognition Template, What Ifs
Repeatable Process
• What is the performance challenge (Discuss perspectives on where they are / need to be using 0----100)
• What are the main pressures? (Use the Performance Triangle again to broaden the discussion)
• Focus on Mindset
• What Red thoughts will happen?
• What techniques / processes / rituals can help you stay or get Blue?
• Complete the Tool
• Discuss learning
• Agree to actions

Example Scenarios
Scenarios are a useful way to stimulate reminder discussions around Red2Blue.
These are merely examples. It is sometimes helpful to write specific ones related to a group
or even to get the group to write some example scenarios for other teams to work on.

Questions
You have just finished a very important meeting with your boss. You come out and you are very upset about how
it went. You could not communicate with your boss probably as you were so nervous due to the significance of
this meeting and you will now, most likely, not get the funding for your new project. You look at your phone and
see you have another meeting planned in an hour. However, you feel like the life has been sucked out of you
due to the earlier meeting not going as well as you had hoped.
What Red thoughts might this scenario lead to?
How could those make you feel and act?
What might help shift your attention from red to blue?

Questions
You are getting into the car for your third driving test after failing the previous two. You realise that the same
examiner that previously failed you twice for not being able to parallel park enters the car with you. You are
hoping that he does not make you parallel park this time. You start driving and the roads are extremely busy as
there has been an accident – you make a couple of minor errors but you continue with no major concerns.
Suddenly, the examiner asks you to parallel park between two cars in exactly the same spot you failed last time.

How could those make you feel and act?
What might help shift your attention from red to blue?

Questions
You are losing a basketball game 76-77 against your local rivals with 10 seconds to go. Whoever wins this game
can progress onto the final of the regional cup. You are the team's star player and have been playing at a very
high standard since the start of the season. With two seconds to go, your team is awarded two free throws. You
step up to take the throws, and everyone is expecting you to score both. You shoot your first throw, and you
miss. Your coach and teammates seem very upset, and the opposition cheers at your miss. The crowd starts to
create a loud and hostile atmosphere. You need to score this next shot to reach extra time.
