SharePoint 2013 as a Records Management Platform - SharePoint Fest NYC 2014Ryan McIntyre
Platform changes in SharePoint 2010 provided true records management capabilities to companies that rely on SharePoint for their document management and collaboration needs. SharePoint 2013 Online and Server builds upon this success with additional capabilities and features. Among other improvements we’ll be looking at in this session, the eDiscovery and hold capabilities have been greatly improved utilizing a new search engine and many platform features are simpler to use. Come learn about the record management capabilities in SharePoint 2013, see how to utilize them properly, and hear real success stories.
While MOSS 2007 introduced content and document management capabilities, it was restricted by a number of missing key features that one would expect to see in an Enterprise solution. In this session you will learn about new features introduced in SharePoint 2010 and discover how you can use these tools to develop a cohesive strategy to bring together traditional content management, document and records management and social computing.
Organizations are slowly waking up to the enormous value that enterprise social knowledge networking can unlock. With the new Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 now Collaborative Knowledge Management (CKM) becomes an approach to enabling organizational intelligence in the enterprise. Taxonomy is the key: Managed Metadata can drive navigation, discovery, relation, and re-usability of content. Managed Metadata provides a common vocabulary and can connect people to social networks. While Microsoft has provided a state of the art API-based backend solution for taxonomy management and search, the Knowledge Management Suite for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is focused on term life-cycle management, content tagging, knowledge browsing, navigation and content discovery.

Coexist or Integrate? Manage Unstructured Content from Diverse Repositories a...Concept Searching, Inc
Are you successfully managing your unstructured content? Have you quantified the risks and costs of not proactively managing your content? Did you know that you can dramatically improve search, eDiscovery, security, records management, migration, collaboration, text analytics, and business social applications, just by getting your unstructured content in order? Learn how to effectively clean up, optimize, and organize your file share content.
There are key solutions built on core technology platforms that will enable you to achieve these improvements. The conceptClassifier for SharePoint and conceptClassifier for Office 365 platforms automatically generate multi-term metadata that form concepts. Imagine it – eliminating end user tagging.
And the conceptClassifier for File Shares utility makes file shares discoverable, searchable, optimized, and organized. It automatically tags and classifies documents to a term set, for improving search and eDiscovery, and preparing content for migration.
Auto-classification and one natively integrated taxonomy/Term Store, available on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid environment, provide the backdrop for a single enterprise search, regardless of where end users are located. Tackle information governance and standardize processes across the entire enterprise. The team from C/D/H provided the knowledge, planning, and optimization to intelligently migrate the manufacturer’s content from on-premises Search 2013 to the Office 365 Hybrid Search platform, using Concept Searching’s new utility, conceptClassifier for Hybrid Search.
The solution allows any of the 40,000 users to search 20 million documents from over 30 content sources, securely and within seconds. It leveraged the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, which reduced the required infrastructure tenfold, while improving performance and reducing complexity in the digital workplace.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

6. CDH Agenda
Approach
– What’s different about SharePoint RM
Tools
– What’s in the SharePoint RM Feature Set
Governable and Usable Taxonomy
• Content type syndication
• Applying metadata
• Managing enterprise metadata
Records Management
• Declaring Records
• eDiscovery and Holds
• Auditing and Reporting
7. SharePoint 2010 RM: How is it
CDH different?
Key tenets of RM in SharePoint
Integrated Governance Familiar and Easy to Use Flexible
9. CDH Applying Metadata: ‟Tagging”
• Web Browser
– List items can be tagged by using the ‟Edit Properties” UI
• Automated
– By a workflow
– By virtue of the location in which we choose to store the item
(location based metadata)
– Values from the parent Doc Set
• Office Clients
– Document Information Panel allows for tagging in the authoring
surface of the Office client
– Backstage in the Office clients will allow full fidelity of the
managed
metadata controls
– InfoPath forms
• Custom Apps
– 3rd party or custom applications using SharePoint Metadata OM
10. CDH Metadata field & features
Closed Term Open Term Set Keywords Set
Set
Controlled & Flexible &
managed open
12. CDH Definition of Terms
• Content Type Syndication - Publishing, sharing, pushing
one or more content types across site collection, Web App,
and farm boundaries
• Hub - A site collection designated as a ‟source” from
which we share content types throughout the enterprise
• Taxonomy - Hierarchy, synonyms, descriptions, and
translations
• Folksonomy - Informal flat list of adhoc values
• Term Store - DB that contains one or more taxonomies
available as a ‟Shared Service”
• Term - Node in the taxonomy with a unique ID and many text
labels
• Tagging - Applying metadata to an item (authoritative or social)
• Keywords - ‟Not just a text string”
13. Metadata Governance in SharePoint
CDH through Content Type Syndication
What’s the benefit?
• Up-to-date and consistent schemas across the Enterprise
• Syndicated content types can have a single policy i.e., from
now on blogs postings must expire after 18 months
What are the features?
• Publishing Content Types
– Ease of use: Content Types are ‟published” from a ‟normal” Site Content
Type Gallery
– Granular delegation: Only one hub per Managed Metadata service
application—but many MM service apps per consuming web application.
• What gets published?
– Content Type with all the corresponding columns
– Including Document Set Content Type
– Policies
– And workflow associations (not the workflows)
15. Taxonomy Governance through
CDH the Managed Metadata Service
• Managed Metadata
– Single or multi-value field
– Binds to a term set of any term store (Share Application Service)
– Many managed metadata columns on a list, library, or content
type
– ‟Like a super choice field”
– Inclusive/exclusive filtering
– MUI enabled
