Shakira was born in Colombia to Colombian and Lebanese parents. She began her singing career in Colombia at age 13 and crossed over to the US pop music scene in 2001 at age 24. To appeal to US audiences, she dyed her hair blonde and sang primarily in English, adapting to mainstream US pop styles. While this helped her commercial success, some criticized her for abandoning her Latin roots and folk/rock influences. Shakira believes she remains true to her Latin identity while gaining new international fans.
