(6) - Star Theory
1. Star Theory - Nicole
Scherzinger
By George Picton-Clark
2. Richard Dyers theory
The theorist, Richard Dyer has suggested that there is a distinct difference
between a pop star and pop performer. He believes that a pop star is a
constructed product that is exposed to the general public, they also go through
different stages to expose themselves more, this can be anything from attending
anywhere where a camera is in sight, or having their personal life constantly
reported on, for example break ups and relationships, the music isn’t necessarily
the most important thing, whereas with a performer, this is different. A pop
performer is somebody who isn’t necessarily a manufactured product, and
someone who conforms to their own standards, however this can also be a
transitionary stage of someone who may end up becoming someone who is
labelled as a ‘popstar’.
3. Nicole Scherzinger
Nicole Scherzinger is somebody who I think has been
constructed by an industry. Nicole’s musical beginnings
started back in 2001 when she auditioned on a show
called ‘Popstars’, she proceeded to win this show and
became part of a girl group called ‘Eden’s Crush’. The
group had minimal success releasing a single called “Get
Over Yourself” which charted at #8, this was the only
time this group had made the charts successfully. Nicole
then proceeded to become a solo artist leaving ‘Eden’s
Crush’ behind.
4. The Pussycat Dolls
After Nicole’s solo career failed to take flight, she was asked to go for an audition
to join a girlband ‘The Pussycat Dolls’ her audition was successful and was
instantly cast as the lead singer. She was instantly launched into the limelight
after controversial stories of her struggle with bulimia hit the headlines, this
immediately made her part of the public eye. This run-in with her newfound
public image continued and in 2006 was fined $3000 for sexually suggestive stage
routines whilst on tour in the Muslim state of Malaysia. The Pussycat Dolls went
on to become one of the worlds most famous and recognizable girl bands selling
millions of records.
6. Personal life and continued exposure
From the years of 2007-2010, Nicole was
in a relationship with F1 legend Lewis
Hamilton, this boosted her appeal even
more especially in the UK where Lewis
was from, the couple were even on and
off after 2010. She left the music
industry from the years of 2011, Nicole
had appeared on the X-Factor, reigniting
her relevance after sabbaticals from the
public eye, this was a success for Nicole
both in the US and UK series…
7. Exposure to the public continued.
The manufactured pop star has since been exposed to many different ventures,
she continues to do the X-Factor in the UK which has proven very successful and
seems to have linked her to more business opportunities in the UK, she is no
longer deemed as a musician, but instead a personality due to the huge array of
ventures she has opted into, for instance TV reality shows (such as the X-Factor),
advertisements both in the UK and USA for popular food brands, and also
clothing deals with different labels, here image has been completely fabricated
from the offset after she was crafted from the very first day she set into the
industry.
8. What do you need to consider when making your own
music video?
When making my own music video, for my genre of trance, I will take into
consideration all of the generic conventions of the genre, this being the colourful
transitions and striking detail to the eye, I will also portray a story of emotion to
the audience which goes alongside the music. In this type of video, the story is
usually very important, as there is sometimes no lyrics to go alongside the piece
which makes the visual aspects important, this will also be reflected in the way
that the actors and people who feature in the video will look, they will stand out.
