Shadows are formed in 5 parts: 1) The highlighted area where light directly hits the object, 2) The light to medium transition where values gradually change from light to dark, 3) The core shadow which is the darkest part receiving the least light, 4) Reflected light from the surface the object rests on, and 5) The cast shadow on the surface from the object.
