This presentation is in Italian. It was delivered by Valentina Kalk, Chief of United Nations Publications, at the Universita' Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan on November 29, 2011. It discusses the evolution of publishing in an era of e-books and e-book readers, and how actors such as Google, Amazon, Apple and others are changing the publishing landscape.

4. Print is dying.
Digital is surging.
Everyone is confused.
—Craig Mod—
5. [To me] it seems a good idea, rather
than mourning their death, to rejoice
that books now have two ways of
staying alive, getting passed on,
enduring, instead of only one.
—Ursula K. Le Guin—
6. «[…] stiamo celebrando la definitiva
separazione del messaggio dalla
presentazione del messaggio e la
prevalenza decisiva del primo.»
—Sergio Maistrello—
7. Ciò che sta cambiando
La scrittura e l'impaginazione sono
già digitali da un pezzo.
Sono la lettura e la distribuzione
che stanno diventando digitali
adesso.
15. Grandi gruppi editoriali
● Panico
● Seguire il cattivo
esempio (industria
musicale, DRM)
● Attesa, invece di un
atteggiamento
proattivo
● Messa in discussione
(ruolo, servizi
all'autore, servizi al
lettore)
16. Editori indipendenti
● Studio commissionato
dall'Alliance Int. Éditeurs
Indépendants
● Vista come un'opportunità
● Riduzione del rischio
● Atteggiamento proattivo
invece che attesa
● Messa in discussione (ruolo,
servizi all'autore, servizi al
lettore)
17. Negli USA
● Situazione geografica molto
diversa dall'Europa (grandi
spazi, gente fuori dai grandi
agglomerati urbani)
● Posizione dominante e strategia
commerciale di Amazon
● Forte concorrenza fra Amazon,
Apple e Google
● Industria editoria enorme
18. Nei Paesi del BRIC
● Spazi enormi
● Catena distributiva
carente
● Letteratura di
importanza mondiale
● Casa studies: Neil
Gaiman (Russia) +
"Original fiction"
(Cina)
19. In Africa
● Infrastruttura
internet carente
● Telefoni cellulari
molto diffusi
● Libri cartacei troppo
cari
● Problematica libri di
testo
20. In Europa
● Grandi differenze fra uno
Stato e l'altro
● Amazon c'è ma non è
Amazon.com
● "Resistenza culturale"
verso l'ebook?
● Catena del libro
tradizionale rodata e
efficiente
● Previsioni di crescita
simili a USA
21. 3. Sfide e nuove idee
L'editoria e il libro del presente e del futuro
22. Cos'è un libro elettronico?
● "Oggetto" indefinito
● "Oggetto"
indefinibile
● Da oggetto a
funzione
● Un contenuto prima
di tutto
—Les publics du livre numérique, Ipsos
MediaCT, 2010—
23. Dal libro all'ebook
Una nuova forma
per un vecchio concetto?
OPPURE
Un nuovo concetto
a cui dare forma?
24. Sfide
● Andare oltre il concetto di pagina
● Integrare (invece di aggiungere) audio, video
e interazione
● Concretizzare la biblioteca universale
● Riorganizzare la catena del libro
● Ripensare il diritto d'autore
● Trovare nuove idee tipografiche
● ???
25. Cos'è una pagina?
● Pagina è legato a
libro, non a lettura
● Pagina è un limite
imposto dalla fisicità
del libro
● Spazio finito vs.
Ritaglio di spazio
infinito
26. Pensare in verticale
● Dividere per
capitoli/articoli e
non per pagine
● Esempio nei fumetti
CC by flickr.com/photos/sbluerock
27. Il computer è infinito
● Sin da Alan Turing,
computer = infinito
● cloud computing =
memoria di
stoccaggio infinita
● pagina digitale =
infinita?
28. [An infinite canvas is] not simply a
huge piece of virtual paper, but
instead an elastic space that does
things no print surface could do, no
matter how big it is.
—Peter Meyers—
29. The "infinite canvas" is a challenge to
think big; a series of design strategies
based on treating the screen as a window
rather than a page. The basic premise is
that there's no reason that long-form
comics have to be split into pages when
moving online. Pages are an option […].
—Scott McCloud—
30. Infinite canvas
● Fortemente adattabile
● Costantemente aggiornabile
● Multistrato (zoom in & out)
● Strutture alternative (anche
in 3D)
● Interattivo (possibilità per i
lettori di commentare e
CC by craigmod.com
condividere)
