MISSION
We bring communities together to build economies
that benefit people and protect the planet.
Economies that when faced with hardship, recover
quickly. Resilient economies must be inclusive and
sustainable; ones where all people and
communities can contribute and benefit while
protecting and restoring our environment.
3. SecondMuse works with entrepreneurs, innovators, and ecosystem actors to create economies that are better for people and the planet.
Over the last decade, weʼve built and operated programs on 7 continents with 600+ organizations such as NASA, The World Bank, and Nike.

The Inclusive Markets programs aimed to support
marginalized populations and improve livelihoods in
the Waste Management Recycling sector.
We disbursed a total of US$573,000 in funding across
22 projects, each project receiving about $15k-35k
Project partners ranged from women-led social
enterprises and for-purpose companies in India to
NGOs seeking justice for vulnerable communities in
Vietnam.

Da Nang, Vietnam
Both organizations utilized US$14,000 to formulate social media
campaigns that highlighted waste pickers as local heroes and gave them
a voice. “The Collector Network” reached 302 Informal Waste Workers
(IWWs), including 287 women.
BINTARI Foundation
Indonesia
With a grant of US$25,000, BINTARI developed a waste marketplace app
called Ambilin (meaning “take it away” in Indonesian) with and for waste
collectors who use motorcycles. After adopting the app, 147 waste
collectors were able to increase their service coverage and optimize
collection routes, reaching up to 1,700 households.

ReCircle
The SCALE100(t) program sought to help
startups and waste management
companies in South and Southeast Asia
increase their annual processing capacity
to at least 100 metric tonnes per month.
With a grant of US$105k, ReCircle in India
redesigned their collection centers and
acquired automation machines and waste
collection vehicles.
Collection capacity was increased from
30 MT/month into 120
MT/month.

GAP IN THE MARKET FOR
NON-DILUTIVE FINANCING
Due to the impact on revenue, our Scale 100(t)
grants could easily have been loans – opening up
smaller ($100-500k) CAPEX-supportive project
financing or revenue based financing is one area
private sector funding has not explored enough.
SMBs ARE AN UNDER-TAPPED,
FUNDABLE LEVER
SMEs run most of the collection and aggregation
operations in SSEA, yet are largely untapped in
formal recycling networks and investment plans.
Supporting the right set of SMBs with patient
midsize loans can increase system capacity.
RIGHT AMOUNT, RIGHT PURPOSE
TO ACHIEVE OUTSIZED IMPACT
Outsize social impact came from many very small
grants in our Inclusive Markets portfolio, and
outsize plastic + revenue impact came from
larger grants to a few carefully curated SMBs in
our Scale 100(t) portfolio. Focus on leverage, not
the grant size per se.
SCALING EARLY / INNOVATIVE
SOLUTIONS NEEDS FLEXIBILITY
Traditional financing leaves little room for
innovation. Pilot projects require flexible funding
and patient timelines to fully develop their
nascent solutions and drive towards scale.

Scaling innovative financing tools and
building more inclusive economies to
support climate-focused, gender-smart
solutions in Asia
To address the financing gaps in South
and Southeast Asiaʼs entrepreneurial
ecosystem, we are bringing our Future
Economy Lab (FEL) to the region.
Through this innovative research and
design process, we will work together
with local partners to identify the
most pressing gaps and stakeholder
challenges and co-design innovative
financial mechanisms that are (1)
commercially viable and (2) tailored to
meet the needs of climate-focused,
gender-smart entrepreneurs.
