Medsin is a student-run charity that aims to create a network of empowered students who can enact social and political change through education, advocacy, and community action locally, nationally, and globally related to health equity and non-communicable diseases. Their mission is to tackle health inequities by educating on non-communicable diseases, advocating for policies and resources, and supporting activities that work directly on these diseases, especially in neglected groups. They equip students with lifelong tools to work on non-communicable diseases through educational events, campaigns, branches, and involvement in their activities.

Careif believes that knowledge should not only be available to those with wealth or those who live in urban and industrialised parts of the world. It considers knowledge sharing to be a basic human right, where this knowledge can change lives and help realise true human potential. Further-more there is substantial knowledge to be found in the less developed, rural and poorer areas of the world and this is valuable to the wellbeing of people in areas which are wealthier.

Centered around a theme of reenergizing and rejuvenating the work environment, this FREE web-based learning opportunity is open to the public and will be similar to a professional conference – no travel involved! Part 2 of the Virtual Learning Event Session will focus on professional development in the area of ‘Cultural Competencies.’
Cultural competence and linguistic competence are widely recognized as fundamental aspects of quality in health/behavioral health care and in the provision of social services and supports. Cultural and linguistic competence are viewed as essential approaches for reducing disparities and for promoting equity by improving access, utilization, service delivery, and health and well-being among patients, their families, and communities. While the evidence suggests the efficacy of these approaches, many in health/behavioral health care and social service organizations continue to struggle with the full integration of cultural and linguistic competence into their policies, structures, practices, and procedures. This VLE session will explore the conceptual frameworks of cultural and linguistic competence and examine their relevance for supporting service members and their families.

Careif believes that knowledge should not only be available to those with wealth or those who live in urban and industrialised parts of the world. It considers knowledge sharing to be a basic human right, where this knowledge can change lives and help realise true human potential. Further-more there is substantial knowledge to be found in the less developed, rural and poorer areas of the world and this is valuable to the wellbeing of people in areas which are wealthier.

Part 2 of the Virtual Learning Event Session will focus on professional development in the area of ‘Cultural Competencies.’
Cultural competence and linguistic competence are widely recognized as fundamental aspects of quality in health/behavioral health care and in the provision of social services and supports. Cultural and linguistic competence are viewed as essential approaches for reducing disparities and for promoting equity by improving access, utilization, service delivery, and health and well-being among patients, their families, and communities. While the evidence suggests the efficacy of these approaches, many in health/behavioral health care and social service organizations continue to struggle with the full integration of cultural and linguistic competence into their policies, structures, practices, and procedures. This VLE session will explore the conceptual frameworks of cultural and linguistic competence and examine their relevance for supporting service members and their families.

While social media poses risks like reputation damage, Mind finds that being transparent, responsive and thanking supporters helps to maximize benefits and minimize risks of using these new channels.

Session 2: Carol Brayne
Global mental health is a significant public health issue, with around 450 million people worldwide suffering from neuropsychiatric conditions. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Large international studies like the 10/66 study have helped measure the prevalence of mental disorders across different countries and cultures, finding that conditions like dementia and depression are highly prevalent and associated with substantial disability. However, there remain many barriers to improving mental health globally, including insufficient funding, stigma, and lack of trained healthcare workers. Advocacy is needed to promote human rights and reduce treatment gaps for mental disorders.

The UN High Level Meeting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) recognized NCDs as a major global challenge and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Key outcomes of the meeting included agreeing to develop voluntary global targets for NCD prevention by the end of 2012 and calling for multisectoral approaches across government sectors to address social and environmental risk factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. While the meeting raised awareness of the growing NCD burden, some critics argued it lacked specific funding commitments and targets to drive real progress against NCDs at a global level.

An old but unresolved issue, is the weight that should be given to questions that the general public feel need urgent answers. Other groups remind us of the unsolved pressing issues of the developing world and the responsibility we have developing preventive measures and treatments for tropical and orphan diseases.
This keynote lecture, delivered by Professor Martin Bobrow, will introduce us to some considerations relating to science funding in this. Should global disease priorities, achievability of research goals or research quality be guiding funding allocation? As a society, do we need ethical guidelines that would drive future research agendas? Are these guidelines more urgently needed in recession times?

Abstract
Charities, governments and other funders of research must
prioritise the areas in which they allocate research funding. An
old but unresolved issue, is the weight that should be given
to questions that the general public feel need urgent answers.

Speaker
Martin Bobrow studied medicine in South Africa. He worked in
Edinburgh and Oxford, before becoming Professor of Medical
Genetics in Amsterdam, London and then Cambridge in 1995.
He retired from this post in 2005.
He has been Deputy Chairman of the Wellcome Trust, Chairman
of ULTRA (Unrelated Living Transplant Regulating Authority),
Chairman of COMARE (Department of Health Advisory
Committee on radiation in the Environment), Deputy Chairman
of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, Chairman of the Muscular
Dystrophy Campaign and a member of the Medical Research
Council and the Human Genetics Advisory Commission.
