However, all is not lost! This session will demonstrate how you can use PHP on AWS Lambda using the Serverless Framework with the same functionality as other natively supported languages. We will also discuss how it works, how it was built and also some of the current drawbacks and limitations of this approach.

In this talk we present a prototype solution for multitenant, scale-out Prometheus. Don't worry, its open source!
Our solution turns a lot of the Prometheus architectural assumptions on its head, by marrying a scale-out PromQL query engine with a storage layer based on DynamoDB & S3. We have disaggregated the Prometheus binary into a microservices-style architecture, with separate services for distribution, ingest and storage. By designing all these services as fungible replicas, this solution can be scaled out with ease and failure of any individual replica can be dealt with gracefully.
This multitenant, scale-out Prometheus service forms a core component of the Weave Cloud, a hosted management, monitoring and visualisation platform for microservice & containerised applications. This platform is built from 100% open source components, and we're working with the Prometheus community to contribute all the changes we've made back to Prometheus.

Migration of 1.1 billion existing photos to the new system took 4 days using Spot instances. This reduced storage usage by 75% to 184 TB and number of S3 objects by 82%, cutting total photo costs by 68%.

The distributed cache is becoming a popular technique to improve performance and simplify the data access layer when dealing with databases. Bringing the data as close as possible to the CPU allows unparalleled execution speed as well as horizontal scalability. This approach is often successful when used in a microservices design in which the cache is accessed only by a single API. However, it becomes more challenging if multiple applications are involved and changes are made to the database directly by other applications. The data held in the cache eventually becomes stale and no longer consistent with its underlying database. When consistency problems arise, the Engineering team must address that through additional coding — which directly jeopardizes the team’s ability to be agile between releases. This talk presents a set of patterns for cache-based architectures that aim to keep the caches always hot; by using Apache Kafka and its connectors to accomplish that goal. It will be shown how to set up these patterns across different IMDGs such as Hazelcast, Apache Ignite or Coherence. These patterns can be used in conjunction with different cache topologies such as cache-aside, read-through, write-behind, and refresh-ahead, making it reusable enough to be used as a framework to achieve data consistency in any architecture that relies on distributed caches.

Manual creation and management of AWS CloudFormation stacks became inefficient. This document discusses how Between, a mobile app for couples, migrated their photo architecture to reduce storage costs by 70%. The old architecture generated and stored multiple thumbnail sizes for each photo, using 6.6 billion thumbnails and 738 TB of storage. The new architecture resizes thumbnails on demand using the fast Skia library, saving the original high resolution photos as smaller WebP files. Migration of 1.1 billion existing photos to the new system took 4 days using Spot instances. This reduced storage usage by 75% to 184 TB and number of S3 objects by 82%, cutting total photo costs by 68%.

Keeping Your Data Close and Your Caches Hotter (Ricardo Ferreira, Confluent) ...
The distributed cache is becoming a popular technique to improve performance and simplify the data access layer when dealing with databases. Bringing the data as close as possible to the CPU allows unparalleled execution speed as well as horizontal scalability. This approach is often successful when used in a microservices design in which the cache is accessed only by a single API. However, it becomes more challenging if multiple applications are involved and changes are made to the database directly by other applications. The data held in the cache eventually becomes stale and no longer consistent with its underlying database. When consistency problems arise, the Engineering team must address that through additional coding — which directly jeopardizes the team’s ability to be agile between releases. This talk presents a set of patterns for cache-based architectures that aim to keep the caches always hot; by using Apache Kafka and its connectors to accomplish that goal. It will be shown how to set up these patterns across different IMDGs such as Hazelcast, Apache Ignite or Coherence. These patterns can be used in conjunction with different cache topologies such as cache-aside, read-through, write-behind, and refresh-ahead, making it reusable enough to be used as a framework to achieve data consistency in any architecture that relies on distributed caches.

Serverless architectures refer to cloud applications that depend substantially on 3rd party services (Backend as a Service, BaaS)
or on custom code that is run in ephemeral deployment units (Function as a Service, FaaS). By moving much behavior to the front end, such architectures reduce the need for ‚always on‘ servers. Therefore, such systems can reduce operational cost and shift operational complexity to BaaS service providers at cost of vendor dependencies and (still) immaturity of supporting services and tools.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices.
