This paper analyzes the algebraic relations of the output bits of the S-boxes used in the Serpent block cipher. It finds that contrary to the designers' claim, some output bits are functions of the input bits with nonlinear order 2, not the maximum order of 3 as specified. Specifically, the output bits s0,3, s1,2, s2,0, s4,0, s5,0 and s6,1 have nonlinear order 2. It also notes that for the inverse S-boxes, the nonlinear order is either 2 or 3 for the output bits. This shows the designers' specifications for the S-boxes do not fully capture their properties.
