“The Greatest”
“The real issue here is
not if pride exists in
your heart; it’s where
pride exists and how
pride is being
expressed in your life.”
GREATNESS
{ redefined }
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
19 And he took bread, and when he had
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
given thanks, he broke it and gave it to
them saying, “This is my body, which is
given for you. Do this in remembrance of
me.” And likewise the cup after they had
eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out
for you is the new covenant in my blood.”
21 “But behold, the hand of him who
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
betrays me is on the table….”
22 “For the Son of Man goes as it has
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
been determined, but woe to that man
by whom he is betrayed…!”
23 And they began to question one
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
another, which of them it could be who
was going to do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them, as
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
to which of them was to be regarded as
the greatest.
“Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let these
words sink into your ears: The Son of Man
is about to be delivered into the hands of
men.’ But they did not understand this
saying…. An argument arose among them
as to which of them was the greatest.
But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their
hearts, took a child and put him by his side and
said to them, “Whoever receives this child in
my name receives me, and whoever receives
me receives him who sent me. For he who is
least among you is the one who is great.”
~ The Gospel of Luke 9:43ff
“He asked them,
‘What were you
discussing on the
way?’ But they kept
silent, for on the way
they had argued with
one another about
who was the greatest.”
~ The Gospel of Mark 9:33
“We spend too much
precious time and
energy managing
perception and
creating carefully
edited versions of
ourselves to show to
the world.”
~ Brené Brown
Key Thought
Although pride is easy
to see in others,
it’s almost impossible
to see in ourselves.
“At every stage of our Christian
development and in every sphere of
our Christian discipleship, pride is the
greatest enemy and humility our
greatest friend.”
~ John Stott (1921-2011)
Anglican Minister & Author
“
What is your
standard of
measuring
greatness
?
25 And he said to them, “The kings of the
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and
those in authority over them are called
benefactors….”
26 “But not so with you. Rather, let the
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
greatest among you become as the
youngest, and the leaders as one who
serves….”
“Whoever would be great
among you must be your
servant, and whoever
would be first among you
must be slave of all. For
even the Son of Man came
not to be served but to
serve, and to give his life as
a ransom for many.”
~ Jesus of Nazareth in
The Gospel of Mark 10:43-45
27 For who is the greater, one who reclines
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
at table or one who serves? Is it not the
one who reclines at table? But I am among
you as one who serves….”
Do you understand what I have done for
you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and
you are right, for so I am. If I then, your
Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have given you an example, that you
also should do just as I have done to you.
Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not
greater than his master….
~ Jesus in the Gospel of John 13:13-16
“
“Humility is not thinking
less of yourself,
but thinking
of yourself less.”
~ CS Lewis
28 “You are those who have stayed with
The Gospel of Luke 22:24-30
me in my trials, 29 and I assign to you, as
my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30
that you may eat and drink at my table in
my kingdom and sit on thrones judging
the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Why does Luke record this
account in his historical

biography of Jesus?
Important Question
If you want to know how to
define greatness, look no further
than Jesus Christ.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,
but in humility count others more significant
than yourselves. Let each of you look not
only to his own interests, but also to the
interests of others. Have this mind among
yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
~ The Apostle Paul in Philippians 2:3-8
…who, though he was in the form of God, did
not count equality with God a thing to be
grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form
of a servant, being born in the likeness of
men. And being found in human form, he
humbled himself by becoming obedient to
the point of death, even death on a cross.
?What do you think our city would
look like if everyone took to heart
what Jesus is teaching here?
NCC, may your
life be marked by greatness
as redefined by Jesus,
the Great Servant of servants.
