Student Name (please print) _Brianna Youngblood
Teacher_Lester Date _8/17/12_
All questions must be completed thoroughly to receive approval for your Senior Project. Some projects
will be submitted to a committee for final approval. This form must be completed and returned to your
senior English teacher by Friday, August 17, 2012. You will not be allowed to change your topic after
October 12, 2012.
The Senior Project is subject to the plagiarism policies set forth by the district and Creekview High
School.
1) Describe the overall topic of your Senior Project.
I am going to be creating a dog treat that is both healthy and delicious that both dogs and people can
eat. I am going to be selling the treats to benefit the National Canine Cancer Foundation. I am then
going to organize a dogwalk to benefit the foundation. All proceeds will go to the foundation.
2) What is your previous experience in this area of study?
My experience in this area is minimal, although I have cooked and baked all my life. I grew up watching
and helping my dad cook. I eventually started to cook on my own, and I found that I loved to bake. Ever
since, I’ve been baking everything. The part I am not experienced with is making something that both a
dog and human could eat that is both healthy and nutritious. It would be beneficial for both dogs and
people to eat.
3) To what career will you connect this project (required)?
I am going to connect this project with a nutritionist. It connects to a nutritionist because I will have to
research and create a “treat” that is healthy and nutritious for both humans and dogs.
4) Describe what you are proposing to do for your Product step-by-step and in detail. Write on the back
of this sheet if necessary.
I am proposing to create a dog treat that is both healthy and delicious for dogs and humans. The first
step in the process is to come up with the recipe for the treats and then test the recipe and make any
changes until its perfect. I will offer two different sized treats, one of small dogs, and the other for
2. medium-large sized dogs. Then I will contact the National Canine Cancer Foundation and tell them
about how I would like to organize a dogwalk to benefit their foundation. I will then have to get
sponsors, donations, find a place to hold the dogwalk, find vendors, organize activities to do at the
dogwalk, and find volunteers to work during the walk. About a month or two before the walk, I will start
selling the dog treats during school. I plan to have some of my friends sell them during lunch and their
classes. I will also be selling some myself. I have done research about the t-shirts, and I found that
National Canine Cancer Foundation will supply me with shirts at the dogwalk and other various items as
well to sell. I will also advertise widely. I plan on making a Facebook page for the walk and making a lot
of posters to put up around the school. The foundation also has an option to create a page where you
can set up a way for people to donate and to read a story about why you are having the fundraiser. I am
going to have the walk in memory of my dog Mika. She passed away earlier this year from cancer. We
could not afford to put her through surgery because it was very expensive, and also, she was very old, so
the chance of surviving the surgery was very minimal. The foundation puts 100% of the money into
research and other funds in the foundation. I am planning on going into stores like PetSmart and
Kroger(because I work at Kroger) and asking if I can sell some of the treats there. I will also ask if I can
put up a poster to advertise the dogwalk. My facilitator will be helping me throughout the process, from
helping me come up with the treats, to helping organize the event. I will be doing majority of the work
though. To be a coordinator for an event for the National Canine Cancer Foundation, you are supposed
to be 21. That is where my facilitator will come in. I will be able to tell the foundation about what I am
proposing to do and explain how my facilitator will be there almost every step of the way and to
supervise and make sure everything is done properly. My overall goal is to raise $2000 for the National
Canine Cancer Foundation.
5) How is this project a “learning stretch” and a challenge for you?
This project is a learning stretch and challenge for me because I’ve never created something that both a
dog and human can eat and enjoy. Also, coordinating an event like this dogwalk, will take a lot of
preparation, work, and learning. I will have to learn how to advertise, get sponsorships, and sell my
product efficiently.
6) What are your estimated costs for completing the Product, and how will you fund these costs?
My estimated costs for completing this project are very rough, I’m estimating around $500, but there is
a very decent possibility of it costing more. To fund these costs I am going to get sponsorships, and ask
for donations from companies. If they donate food for me to use for the dog treats, or if they sponsor or
donate money for the walk, I will advertise their company’s logo on the back of the t-shirts that will be
sold/given to people at the dogwalk. All proceeds will go to the National Canine Cancer Foundation.
7) Who have you chosen (or are considering choosing) as your Project Facilitator?
I am considering choosing Sally Gerlach.
8) What is this person’s expertise in this field?
3. Sally Gerlach graduated from the University of Georgia. She and her husband own their own animal
hospital, Ball Ground Animal Hospital. She is a DVM. DVM stands for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. To
put these letters behind your name, you have to go to school to become a vet. This requires a lot of
science and is similar training to what medical doctors receive. She has worked as a veterinarian for over
25 years.
