Literary analysis and Critical Interpretation: A 21st Century Learner Skill
In the 21st Century, literary analysis and critical interpretation is a skill the learners need to develop. This is because they play essential role in understanding human culture, history, and society. Analysis and critical interpretation of literary texts primarily begins with closely reading of the texts. Then it involves a rigorous examination of the written word, exploring the distinctions of language used, narrative techniques, and the underlying themes and ideas. As such, analysis and interpretation of literature is beneficial as it provides cultural insights, fosters empathy and understanding and hones critical thinking and creative imagination.
Since literature is a reflection of human life, a reader or a learner can gain insight from different cultures, values, beliefs, and societal norms from the context to which the text is written. This then helps the reader to understand and appreciate human experiences because they are aware of diverse backgrounds and settings. Literary analysis also hones critical thinking and creative imagination. When learners engage in a literary study, they undergo dissecting the beauty and complexity of the text to be able to uncover the hidden meanings from it. While doing so, they explore realms of fantastical worlds, challenging ideas and innovative story telling styles. These literary experiences would strengthen their ability to think creatively and analytically and solve complex issues from multiple angles.
Indeed, analysis and critical interpretation of literary texts extends far beyond the academic realm. It can offer means of personal growth and it broadens one’s perspectives which could somehow equip individuals from navigating the complexities of the world with greater wisdom and sensitivity.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Emily: Yes, sometimes I wish I could just be a princess. Raigen, Kayden, Summer: Yeah, look what you did to us!
Raigen: Where cooks do the cooking for us! Jacob: Mama Odie can help! Help me find her and you’ll become princesses!
Laurel: And no more mopping! All the little girls: Our dream come true!!

Jacob: Yes, I’m Prince Naveen. The evil shadow man turned me into a frog! Everyone says what is special about them and exits room.
Emily and Georgia: We don’t believe you! Me: The little frogs did a spectacular job finding something special about themselves. I think they’ve finally come to terms with
the fact that being a princess isn’t everything. Perhaps that was the point of Mama Odie’s encouragement to dig a little deeper.
The froggies are very proud of their realizations. Hopefully something good is in the cards for them.
Jacob: I’ll prove it! Rub my head and I’ll turn into a Prince!
The girls enter as princesses and dance.
All the girls line up to rub Jacob’s head. They proceed to exit to the other studio to go to the swamp.
