Kelley Threlkeld created a scrapbook documenting her weeklong fairytale dance camp for her senior project. The scrapbook focused on making the dance show a success. Though her research paper was on small business rather than dance, she learned how to be a better dance teacher during the camp. While initially interested in owning her own dance studio, working on the business aspects of running it made her realize it was not the right career path for her.

Dear Judges:
My name is Kelley Threlkeld. I am a Creekview thespian, a member of the National
Honors Society, Secretary of the Junior Optimist Club, member of Habitat for Humanity,
and an assistant youth leader at Liberty Grove Baptist Church. I’ve been dancing at the
Woodstock School of Ballet since I was three years old. For my Senior Project, I assisted
with a weeklong fairytale dance camp. The camp was for children ages 3 to 9 and the
theme was Princess and the Frog. My product is a scrapbook that documents the camp.
The scrapbook I created for my product focuses on everything that happened during the
dance camp to make the final show a success. My research paper was on small business,
which didn’t directly correlate to my actual project, but was an aspect of the total career
I’m interested in pursuing. I learned how to be a better dance teacher during my week of
camp. I had never made a scrapbook prior to my senior project, so I had some pages that
turned out badly but after a couple tries I was really happy with the whole thing. The
girls and the parents were extremely proud of the show.
I chose to do my research paper on small business because I was interested in opening my
own studio. I knew all the dance aspects involved, but was clueless when it came to
running the business end. I learned valuable facts about small business in general.
Unfortunately, I’ve decided that I no longer want to pursue owning a studio of my own.
Having to deal with the business aspects is not what I imagined when I pictured the fun
job I wanted. It’s also risky and quite costly, and I’m not much of a risk taker.
All in all, I enjoyed the dance camp. It was a fun experience for me and the kids that
participated. I also learned a great deal about: teaching, keeping control of a classroom,
and choreography. After I started working on all the other aspects of the Senior Project, I
couldn’t look as fondly on my dance camp, because it generated overwhelming feelings
that I had constant work that needed to be done throughout an already extremely hectic
Senior year. Thank you so much for volunteering your time to judge Senior Projects this
year.
