Despite being the world's fastest growing sport, mixed martial arts (MMA) is still not legal in all US states. MMA originated from ancient Greek sports and has evolved significantly since the 1990s. It now involves athletes training in multiple martial arts and has much stricter safety regulations. MMA appeals to a wide audience internationally and has many benefits for practitioners like physical fitness and self defense skills.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Despite being the world’s fastest growing sport, mixed martial arts is still not 100% legal in the United States. This mainly due to the public having a bad view of MMA, when in reality, it’s a legit sport that many people just don’t give a chance.
My journey through the Senior Project and my Senior year has been a lot like riding a bull. But it’s important to know that…
To successfully ride a bull, balance and consistency are key, just as they are in life. Without these, failure is imminent.
By balancing myself and being patient, I can successfully ride out the tough bull. Nonetheless,
Riding the bull was definitely no easy task. I had to hold on tightly and be prepared.
The great Chinese philosopher Confucious once said….I applied this quote to my topic.Choosing my topic was easy. Mixed Martial Arts is a sport that I am a very big and passionate fan of.I grew up as a boxing fan (and I still am), watching boxing matches with my dad and uncles,Watching Roy Jones Jr, Oscar de la Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and Ronald Winky Wright. As soon as I watched mma, I was hooked. I was exposed to it at a young age.I remember me, my brother, and cousins renting DVD’s one summer and watching all the old fights and just being intrigued. How did this all work?!
My paper was on the legalizing the sport of mixed martial arts. My paper primarily focused on debunking the myths the public has about the sport. Now, It can only be legalized by educating the public.Educating the public and awareness are absolutely key for the cause.
It’s comes as a surprise to some people that Mma is STILL illegal in a few places. However, some states such as Alaska and Wyoming have no athletic commissions.
Before one can understand the complexity of modern MMA, you have to take a look at the ancient lineage of mixed martial arts and how far it has come.was introduced in the 1st Ancient Olympic Games in 648 B.C. so this sport has a really old and rich history.
My paper was on debunking common myths the public has about MMA. The two main categories of myths people have about mma are that:MMA has not changed; it’s still as violent and bloody as it was in 1993The MMA community and MMA fighters aren’t good
BRIEF AND TO THE POINT!!!!!!People must understand that MMA from 1993 and MMA from 2011 are two completely different sports, and virtually indistnguishable when looked at today.1.No mouthpieces1. No gloves2.Incredibly few rules2.No organized weight classes3. No readily available emergency personnel4. No pre and post fighter medical checksExtremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening 1.Mouthpieces and gloves are REQUIRED.2.The Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts(a set of 31 rules) are used, which sets time limits, set numbers of rounds, mandatory judges, and imposes five distinct weight classes3. Emergency personnel at every sanctioned event4. Pre and post fighter medical checks are conducted by athletic commissions-pre and post-fight MRIs, four ringside doctors and two ambulances in case of emergency at each event and mandatory steroid testing
Today, athletes in MMA cross-train in multiple disciplines and come from a variety of backgrounds today. It’s a very diverse sport in terms of martial arts used.Fighters today also take the sport very seriously; a lot of fighters today have nutrionists, managers/agents, and they train at world-class facilities.
Many would be surprised to know that Mixed martial arts’ popularity with women has grown exponentially with women over the last five and six years.
Superbowl example. Superbowl Is popular here, but no so popular elsewhere, such as europe.Sport has no boundries. MMA breaks a lot of cultural and social boundries; afterall, it’s in our human DNA to fight. We’re a competitive species, so it’s a sport that naturally applies to ALL of us.
During my research, I learned a fact that was surprising to me and it probably is to other people. Though I knew MMA fighters were educated people,It may surprise you to know that 70% of UFC fighters currently hold a college degree.
Despite the brutality of the sport, there has never been a single death in the history of the UFC.There have been, however. two recorded deaths in two unsanctioned MMA events, but never in the UFC.Deaths can be prevented if MMA can be sanctioned, which would provide the sport with the supervision it needs to be safer everywhere.
In fact, MMA is a rather safe sport and has many benefits for people that choose to practice it. -obvious physical benefits; training is grueling and you use every part of your body-a lot of MMA techniques are self-defense proven.--one of the few sports where you get a good workout, learn self-defense, and learn important values all at the same time.
A challenge presented to me as I rode the bull was the fieldwork phase of the paper.
Koons’ Martial arts experience includes being a former La Serna High School assistant wrestling coach and a practioner of karate, brazilianjiujitsu and kickboxingHe’s a man that has been through a lot in his life, a former alcoholic who once lost everything in his life. He’s recovered and now he’s a changed man. Very humble and one of the most generous individuals I’ve met in my life. Known to me as Coach Koon.
Though I trained and attended class at the gym regularly, I was only able to do community service hours when members of the VIDA program came to the gym so I can help them.Together, me and Coach Koon completed 15 hours of fieldwork together.
Blackmat MMA Is a local gym designed to keep at-risk youth OFF the street and occupied. Keeping them OUT of trouble, all while giving them a great workout, teaching them self-defense skills and good values. and just be there for them.
The VIDA program is a program created by the Lakewood Sheriffs program that brought at-risk or troubled youth to the gym to train. Its an outlet for the them for their anger/stress/frustration. It provides good physical exercise. They would come every Monday and Wednesday. Explain “vida days”It wasn’t easy working with these kids.
My learning stretches aren’t as bad as the learning stretches of others.Like I stated before, I picked a topic I loved. Fieldwork was never a drag for me; I enjoyed training and working with other kids
In this picture here, I’m teaching a student how to properly apply an arm bar maneuver, which is a brazilianjiujitsu technique. I was teaching him how to apply the technique from the mount position. The key is for your legs to contract as your shift your hips up. It’s a very devastating technique, as it completely breaks your arm. A lot of these kids are at-risk youth; they’re really angry kids It was tough working with the youth and it really tested my patience as well.
Along with working with kids, participating in the VIDA program and helping kids on their homework, I also trained and practiced with the Blackmat Team. Practice was grueling and it really took a toll on my body.In this picture here, me and another gym member are having a live 1 on 1 match in which I was completely dominated, yet won because he gassed out. All those muscles need oxygen. Matches like these were everyday things for me, and it took it’s toll on me definetely.
Every Wednesday, the gym had a tutoring session in place to help members of the gym with their homework. On this particular day, I helped a kid named esteban on his geometry homework. He was a junior and he was really struggling, mainly because he said he could not always see the board. He also told me he was shy to ask questions when he was confused. I told him not to do that. Hes a really bright kid and that he should apply his personality to school and that will follow him throughout everything he does.It was kind of difficult working with a kid’s math homework, as math is not my strong subject. That made it difficult for me to explain everything in a way in which he would understand. I remembered everything as well as I could and I managed to help him complete his work. It was tough explaining something that I was not too good at myself. However, I did the best I could and I helped him complete his work and his assignment
During my fieldwork, I grew a lot as a person.
By training in MMA, I got a good understanding of the sport for my researchIt was a very hands-on experience for me
Without properly preparing for the future, my ride on the bull can prove to be disastrous.
Thoughmma is something I’m passionate about, it’s not something that I would like to make a career out of. I plan to continue training for fitness purposes, but it’s not something that I can see myself doing professionally.I’m well-aware that it’s a possibility that my goals might change and that my choices will change, but as of this present moment, these are my plans for the rest of my life. My plan is still rough around the edges, but as I experience the college lifestyle, i’m sure I’ll get a much clearer picture on what I want to do.A lot of people have discouraged me and a lot of people have told me I can’t do this. I want to turn the skeptics into believers. And the completion of the senior project can ultimately lead me to that goal.
Without balance, I can be thrown off the bull in the blink of an eye.
By remaining consistent and persevering through the tough ride, I can successfully pull through and succeed. Its important to know that,
