Dr. Jan Diels, a soil physics professor at KU Leuven in Belgium, will give a seminar on February 5, 2014 in Room Jacobo Zender at the Agronomy Faculty. The seminar, taking place from 10-11:30 AM, will discuss Dr. Diels' current research on physical soil processes at KU Leuven and an overview of ongoing research in Belgium and Africa. Some of Dr. Diels' current research topics include the vulnerability of groundwater and surface water in Flanders to nitrate pollution, the mechanical and hydrological influences of trees and grasses on stabilizing riverbanks and landslides in Ethiopia, and transport of dissolved organic phosphorus from soils

Dr. Jan Diels works as a Professor in KU Leuven in the Division of Soil
and Water Management and will work for the VLIR-UNALM Project in
the highlands and arid coast of Peru. He teaches Soil Physics, Soil
water modeling, Irrigation Agronomy, Research Methods for Data
Collection and Processing. Some topics of his current research are:
vulnerability of groundwater and surface water in Flanders to diffuse
pollution with nitrate. Mechanical and Hydrological influences of
multipurpose trees, shrubs and grasses to stabilize riverbanks,
landslides and gullies in Southwest Ethiopia. Transport of dissolved
organic phosphorus from soils to surface water in agricultural areas.
Research, education and extension program for sustainable manure
management practices. Learning from the Belgian model.
