3. WHAT IS SELF-MUTILATION?
• Cutting is an act whereby an individual runs a sharp object along a
part of their body, usually to the point of bleeding.
• Individuals who engage in cutting are often referred to as “cutters.”
• Injuries are most commonly inflicted on the wrists or forearms,
although cuts to the face, genitals and thighs have been observed.
• Self-mutilation through cutting is a form of Non-suicidal Self Injury
(NSSI).

4. IMPORTANCE OF ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE.
• Cutting brings about many harmful side effects which may
practically destroy the possible futures of individuals.
• Recent research have shown that there has been a significant
increase in the cases of cutting among young people especially
from the ages of 13 to 19.
• Thus it is only necessary that awareness of this issue be brought
up and is spread to the public.

5. CONDUCTING A SURVEY
• A survey was being conducted on approximately thirty students
varying from the ages of 16-19 years old.
• Several questions were brought up to help us get a better
understanding of how aware students are of self-mutilation
through cutting and how they would handle situations like this.

• Self-mutilation through cutting can sometimes lead to serious
medical consequences, up to and including death.
• It is also often easy to misjudge the depth of a cut or end up with
an infected wound.
• The relief wanted or expected is more often than not short lived
and is usually followed by other feelings like guilt and shame.

• Keeps individuals from learning better and effective strategies to
deal with their emotions and feelings.
• Puts them at risk for bigger problems down the line including;
major depression, drug and alcohol addiction, and even suicide.

manipulating them, trying to make them care, trying to make

• Some young people also view this as a way to physically express
the pain buried inside them.

• A commonly supported theory behind the motivation of self-
mutilation is that it is a way to achieve emotional equilibrium
(“emotional balance”).
• Cutters describe an increasing feeling of tension, which
immediately diminishes after the act of self-mutilation.
• In most cases the self-mutilation is not motivated by interpersonal
manipulation, but rather by the individuals’ attempt to manage
themselves.

• Thus she/ he has someone to talk to whenever she/ he needs

• Helps individuals to release stress, anxiety and tension.
• Slowly but surely, individuals will come to realise how redundant

Although cutting is not an act of suicide, it should be taken very
seriously. It is a very dangerous act which brings about many
negative side effects and may essentially cause individuals to lose
whatever future they might had have. Thus we must play a part to
spread the message and awareness of self-mutilation.
