Better than words : Say it
with a selfie
Argument by Gloria Chang
OMG ! Not another selfie !
Argument by Shermakaye Bass
Prepared by: Youness Bakri, Abdulrahman
Ali, Kamran Khan, and Mohannad Odeh.
The selfie has become a huge part of modern life. It has transformed the
simple self-portrait into something more immediate and has grown in cultural
importance, being linked to identity, self-exploration and narcissism. So is it
something to worry about, or just a bit of harmless fun?
We will find out what are the reasons behind the claim of each of
these two arguments !
Let’s compare and evaluate arguments !
In "OMG, Not Another Selfie!" the author describes a number
of problems that could result from taking too many selfies.
In "Better than Words: Say it with a Selfie" the writer
uses as evidence to support her claim that Selfies are all
about online special networks and social networks lead to
better relationships and that teens especially say they
have more positive experiences that this is todays way to
connect with other people.
“BETTER THAN WORDS : SAY IT WITWITH A
SELFIE “
“OMG, NOT ANOTHER SELFIE !”
Claim Selfies are a positive form of self-
expression.
Taking lots of selfies can have negative
effects.
Evidence
and
Support
• Selfies allow for creative expressions
and Selfies improve confidence.
“ humans, since the beginning of time,
have used self-portraits to express
themselves”.
• Selfies are better than words to express
who we are.
“ selfies obviously say it better than words”
• Selfies are about making connections .
“ the best part of taking selfies is that they
are a great way to connect with friends.”
• Selfies can lead to negative thoughts and Selfies
interfere with true friendship.
“However, selfies can put distance between us and the
people who care”.
• Selfies is a way of getting “likes “.
“the purpose of posting online often is to get likes “.
• Taking too many selfies can be bad for a person’s self
esteem.
“ the end result is a competitive environment with
increased self focus, less true connection and, more often
than not, increased self critism “.
Sources No specific sources cited quotes from experts: Teacher Katie
Schumacher , Dr.Allison chase (psychologist )
and research results using statistics.
Flaws in the Argument • She says that selfies are a form
of self-expression, but the idea
of "self" is related to narcissism,
so this is not the best argument.
• In the 1st paragraph you can
see the use of exaggeration:
“Everyone everywhere owns and
uses a smart phone “.
• Stereotypical statements, such
as people who are shy or lack
confidence hate confident
people, and name-calling, such
as "cavemen.
• The use of overgeneralization :
“All have smart phones and social
media is everywhere..”
• Overgeneralization:
“ after all, selfies takers are so in
love with themselves”.
• exaggerates the claim that
readers cannot change their
mind after posting a picture.
• rhetorical device may affect her
credibility because students may
point out that not all people
who takes selfies are narcissists
as the writer claims.
Hyperbole; loaded language
/name-calling; stereotype ,
emotional appeal .
No specific sources cited , it might
affect the writer’s credibility !
Stereotype , emotional appeal
