This document summarizes a study on self-help groups (SHGs) in India. Key findings include: (1) SHGs enable women to save money and access credit, promoting financial inclusion and alleviating poverty. However, over half of long-term members remain poor. (2) SHG membership provides women social and political opportunities but most groups remain single-caste. (3) Record keeping is a challenge due to members' low education levels. Loan repayment issues affect sustainability, with some members falling significantly behind on payments. Overall, transparent management and guidance on issues like domestic violence are needed to strengthen SHGs' impact.
