Manual Overview
The Self-Guided Media Training Manual is designed for employees and management throughout an
organization to provide clarity, support, and valuable resources for a social media platform. The main
elements included in this guide will focus on how and why the implementation of social media can be
beneficial and the importance of infusing social learning into classrooms, training, and the overall
infrastructure of the organization.
The Self-Guided Media Training Manuel explores four social media platforms, including YouTube,
Facebook, blogs, and Twitter. An explanation of what each tool is can be found in the manual, as well as
how the individual tools can be utilized to enhance effective training, organizational, and engagement
opportunities.
An annotated bibliography is also included in the manual, supporting research with recent peer-reviewed
articles on the benefits and limitations of social learning for problem solving, business issues, and
strengthening relationships. A comprehensive PowerPoint presentation accompanies the Self-Guided
Social Media Training Manual offering additional support and resources.

Self-Guided Media Training Manual Overview The Self-Guided Media Training Manual is designed for employees and management throughout an organization to provide clarity, support, and valuable resources for a social media platform. The main elements included in this guide will focus on how and why the implementation of social media can be beneficial and the importance of infusing social learning into classrooms, training, and the overall infrastructure of the organization. The Self-Guided Media Training Manuel explores four social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, blogs, and Twitter. An explanation of what each tool is can be found in the manual, as well as how the individual tools can be utilized to enhance effective training, organizational, and engagement opportunities. An annotated bibliography is also included in the manual, supporting research with recent peer-reviewed articles on the benefits and limitations of social learning for problem solving, business issues, and strengthening relationships. A comprehensive PowerPoint presentation accompanies the Self-Guided Social Media Training Manual offering additional support and resources.

  1. The Self-Guided Media Training Manual is designed for employees and management throughout an organization to provide clarity, support, and valuable resources for a social media platform. The main elements included in this presentation and manual will focus on how and why the implementation of social media can be beneficial and the importance of infusing social learning into classrooms, training, and the overall infrastructure of the organization.
  2. Social Media is an effective way to connect with students, friends and neighbors, and clients. Many social media sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and blogs create platforms to help cultivate the learning experience, are easily accessible, and millions of people already know how to use that technology.
  3. Learning is universal, evolving, and moving at the speed of technology! Learning in a school setting or training for a corporate organization doesn’t have to be done in a traditional setting. The use of social media sites enhances the learning and training experience from making interactive videos to creating community groups to share information. This boosts the opportunity for collaboration, diversity, creativity, and the creation of even more content.
  4. YouTube is a free social media site built around the use of video to share information and interests with others across the web. YouTube is one of the most popular distribution sites for audio and visual content on the internet. YouTube is an engagement tool for students and instructors to visually demonstrate competency. It is also a search tool, tremendous resource library and has unlimited uses for instructional and engagement opportunities in the traditional or online learning environment. (Moran, 2011)
  5. Facebook is a free social networking site designed to make it easy to connect and share with friends and family. The platform was created in 2004 by college student Mark Zuckerberg, and is now the world’s largest social networking site with more than one billion users worldwide (Goodwill Community Foundation, 2016). As a tool in the classroom, Facebook can be used to engage your students, create enthusiasm, and change the perception of education. Ways to include Facebook in your curriculum include integrating videos, articles and additional resources into your lessons. Facebook also allows you to build relationships with your students by sharing motivational videos and quotes, is a place for sharing, asking questions and providing resources and discussion topics. It can also be a forum for reminding students about deadlines, assignments, and encouraging interaction in a safe, welcoming environment (Norman, 2016).   
  6. A blog is a series of inputs, entries or posts, created by individuals on the internet. The term blog is abbreviated for web log. The blogs are stored in a sequential order, they are searchable and provide the reader the opportunity to comment on the material. The purpose of a blog is to share personal journals or professional products and advertisement. Within the blog the producer is able to include pictures, videos, and podcasts. Blogging is the new way individuals share knowledge, opinions and ideas in this social learning era. Students should be encouraged to post work online and receive commentary from classmates or outsiders. Students can exchange hyperlinks through their blogs for feedback and editing. Incorporating blogging within the classroom can foster different educational genres. This provides students with an environment of critical learning.  
  7. Twitter is a social media network designed for real time messages and global reach. There are many benefits to using Twitter in a social learning setting. Twitter is an easy to use, powerful social media platform, training, and engagement strategy. Chat session in the eLearning platform, as well as to find new content to create courses are a few of the benefits Students can create hashtags that are exclusive to their class, in order to share content with each other. (Webanywhere, 2015).    
  8. In the Self-Guided Social Media Training Manual an additional ten studies were analyzed and shared to provide the reader with more information on examples of social media uses in training and classroom settings. Additional applications categorizing the successes and challenges of utilizing YouTube, Facebook, Blogs, and Twitter platforms in effective strategies are presented in the lengthy, comprehensive section. The Annotated Bibliography supports research with recent peer-reviewed articles on the benefits and limitations of social learning for problem solving, business issues, and strengthening relationships.
