HELLO
Some reflections and thoughts from
Scotland
In this webinar
▪ Keith will do a short introduction
▪ Danielle are Debbie will share some thoughts from
their personal experience about:
• What self-directed support has meant to them
• What has been working well and what have been
the challenges and obstacles
• Hopes for the future and things learnt
You can ask questions at the end of the presentations
In Scotland we have both national
strategy and legislation
 National Strategy for Self Directed Support 2010
-2020
Vision to create a change in the delivery of
support which respects equal citizenship, rights
and responsibilities
 Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland)
Act 2013
To direct care and support and make
informed choices about how the support is
provided
With statutory principles (principles in law)
 Collaboration
 Dignity
 Informed Choice
 Involvement
 Participation
The rules for what you should
expect
In our legislation, there are what are called
the four options of self-directed support
And a national implementation
plan for 2019/2021
Leaders and systems
 Senior decision makers and systems create the culture and conditions
for choice and control over social care support
Workforce
 Workers enable and empower people to make informed decisions
about their social care support
 Workers across all aspects of social care support exercise the
appropriate values, skills knowledge and confidence
People
 People have choice and control over their social care support
How is it really going?
There is considerable variation in the experience of
individuals and families in different areas of the country and
even within areas
There are many challenges, alongside examples of positive
progress in implementing self-directed support. There is little
evidence of the transformation required to really unlock the
potential of self-directed support
There are examples of people directing their own support
and being supported in new and effective ways BUT not
everyone is getting the choice, control and flexibility that
was envisaged.
What do you think?
' After we come out of lockdown and are in our new normal:
A. I am a lot more optimistic about self-directed support working
well in my country
B. I am a little more optimistic about self-directed support working
well in my country
C. I am neither more optimistic or pessimistic about self-directed
support after lockdown
D. I am more pessimistic about self-directed support working well in
my country
What do you think?
I think the most useful next steps in our country will be :
A. Try to build an alliance/movement with other people and
groups wanting to take forward self-directed support.
B. Test out a small scale pilot where people can make their own
choices about support with limited risk
C. Share some resources and information about self-directed
support to stimulate interest
D. Gather some good stories from my country of people doing
some different things
Thank you for coming
along this afternoon.
Without you, it wouldn’t
have worked as well!
