The document discusses several topics related to social and professional identity in education:
1) Examples of real-world research projects and their messy but vital nature.
2) The sociocultural paradigm and how it defines learning as a social activity.

Internet Experience In Education Conference 2008 B Domurchudomurchu1
This document discusses the potential benefits of using mobile technologies like EeePC laptops and content management systems (CMS) to create enriched learning environments for students. It argues that technologies can enhance learning by allowing students to actively construct knowledge through hands-on experiences, collaboration with others, and making their ideas public. When implemented properly with support for different learning styles and intelligences, mobile technologies may stimulate learning and help develop skills for active global citizenship.

Rapid technological changes are impacting higher education, often outpacing developments in pedagogy and theory. While technology promotes connections between learners and resources, a theoretical understanding of networked learning is still needed. Research on student experiences shows that effective e-learners see technology as enhancing rather than driving their learning. Universities must plan strategically to ensure flexibility in responding to a digital future.

An implementation of virtual worlds platform for educators in Second Life is summarized in 3 sentences:
The platform brings together educators from different universities in Turkey to share experiences and improve skills regarding pedagogy and virtual worlds through weekly academic meetings on the Infolit iSchool island in Second Life. Educators participate in presentations, open forums, and brainstorming to discuss using virtual worlds for education. The goal is to create a community for educators to learn from each other and find solutions for challenges of implementing virtual worlds.
Second Life is a 3D virtual world where users create avatars and interact in a simulated environment. It has several potential educational uses including fostering collaborative learning communities, facilitating identity formation through avatar representation, and providing an immersive experience for situated learning. Effective educational uses of Second Life require constructivist pedagogical approaches and consideration of both synchronous and asynchronous participation. It is best used as a supplement rather than replacement for traditional classroom methods.
The document discusses cultivating a personal learning network (PLN) through informal pedagogical dialogues. It describes how PLNs can be developed through interactions online that include sharing ideas, materials, and discussions with other educators. The document outlines a proposed study involving Mexican English language educators participating in open online discussions over 10 weeks to enrich their PLNs and professional learning. Data would be collected from participant blogs, websites and interviews to analyze the impact on individual educators and the concept of a PLN.
Learning with new technologies. The case of Second Lifeelena.pasquinelli
The document discusses the use of virtual and telepresence technologies in education. It notes that these technologies can enable new forms of learning through simulations and remote collaboration. However, it also raises ethical questions about their effects on teacher-student relationships and the need to distinguish real from virtual experiences. The document advocates for developing dedicated educational tools rather than using general virtual worlds like Second Life, with a focus on complementing rather than replacing teachers.

The document discusses posthuman classifications and proposes adding "determinate kinds" to Ian Hacking's conceptualization of scientific classification. Determinate kinds account for the active participation of technological objects in shaping social realities. The document uses examples of deafness to illustrate how classifications can be indifferent, interactive, or determinate. It argues that considering these three types of classifications provides a framework for analyzing how gathered objects and ideas are linguistically shaped by technologies.

This document discusses the implications of digital identities and learning in virtual worlds and future metaverses. It notes that over 700 educational institutions currently use Second Life for digital learning. Studies show that virtual world simulations can be as or more effective than traditional classrooms, as seen in Loyalist College's border security training simulation in Second Life. Virtual worlds allow for geographically dispersed students and faculty to collaborate synchronously from different locations. However, concerns about cyberdisinhibition effects and potential addiction are also discussed.

Teacher Feedback and Linguistic Profiles Can Help to Improve Learners' WritingBenjamin L. Stewart, PhD
The document discusses a study on analyzing writing errors in English compositions to help improve learners' writing. The study identified types of errors in 31 English learners' essays on friendship. It analyzed syntactic errors like word order, morphological errors like verb tense, and lexical errors like word choice. Questionnaires on learners' linguistic profiles were also used. Statistical analysis found correlations between error types and profiles. The study aims to help teachers provide better feedback to learners based on their individual linguistic needs.
This document outlines a three step process for narrowing down a research topic. The first step is to select an initial topic of interest and identify an indirect question that reveals a problem within that topic area. For example, the author expresses interest in learning more about teacher feedback and wants to understand when it allows students to feel more confident speaking a second language with peers. The second step is to explain why this topic is being explored in order to answer a "bigger question." For the teacher feedback example, this is to understand how teacher intervention can promote or discourage student oral production. The third step is to make the research problem or question specific. The document provides examples of applied linguistics topics that could be explored.
An introduction of a personal and professional eportfolio for the English language teacher trainer and life-long learner. It is recommended that eportfolios remain easy to navigate and easy to read.
When writing academic writing texts, consider indentations, margins, citations and references, headings, active voice preferred, text, and serial (Oxford) comma.

It defines purposeful practice as opportunities for meaningful language use and practice of difficult linguistic features. The document also discusses performance tasks and flipped learning as methods for implementing purposeful practice. Performance tasks provide real-world language tasks for students while flipped learning involves delivering instructional content online for homework and doing interactive activities in class. The document argues that purposeful practice through performance tasks and flipped learning can help improve language teaching.
This document discusses key elements of APA style that should be prioritized for academic essays. It lists 10 important aspects of APA style: indentations, margins, citations and references, headings, active voice, text formatting, serial commas, and formatting references for different source types like books and websites. It also discusses departmental plagiarism policies and ways to ensure consistent expectations for applying APA style and addressing plagiarism across degree programs.
How to Reach Out to Every Student by Personalizing the Online Learning Design?Benjamin L. Stewart, PhD
This document discusses building an online teaching business through differentiated instruction and assessment centered around performance tasks. This document discusses why educators should share knowledge and resources. It provides examples of how educators can share, including through social media platforms like Twitter, online communities, open educational resources, and open courseware. The document suggests that sharing helps combat teacher isolation, explore new ideas, and build a sense of community. It also notes that some see sharing as important for student and colleague benefit, as well as professional responsibility and development, while others may feel it threatens their sense of power or competence.

This document discusses personal learning networks and how educators can develop their teaching practice through networking. It begins by asking how an educator's perceptions, skills, and knowledge impact their contributions to a personal learning network. Next, it explores how pursuing a personal learning network can influence changes in teaching. The document then discusses what a network is, how learning occurs through networking, and the differences between groups and networks. It also examines connections between networks, communities of practice, and sociocultural theory. Overall, the document advocates that educators can improve their practice and contribute to their personal learning network by sharing resources and participating in open collaboration online.

Seldom do Teachers Become Lifelong Learners by Accident
1. Life is 10% what happens to you and
90% how you react to it.

6. Maxims of a Personal Learning Network
1. A personal learning network (PLN) is a collection of ideational,
material, and human actors that are a cause and/or consequence
of one’s knowledge base, skill sets, and overall disposition.
2. An actor is any node within one’s PLN that has the potential to
change and/or cause another actor to change.
3. A PLN never remains constant: it or parts of it are either growing
or withering… and it never starts from nothing.
4. Understanding (metacognitively) one’s PLN can occur at one point
in time and over time.
5. What usually is meant as “personalized learning” is simply
understanding one’s PLN… (professional) learning is
understanding one’s PLN!
7.
8. How does a PLN contribute to an
(English) language teacher’s
professional development learning?
10. Teacher competence is “a complex combination of knowledge, skills, understanding, values, attitudes
and desire which lead to effective, embodied human action in the world, in a particular domain” (Crick,
2008 as cited in European Commission…, 2013, p. 9).
