Segregation
Many communal areas were split to segregate white
people from other races. This included phone boxes,
                              waiting rooms and cafes.
In many cases, it wasn’t just a case of segregation, but
completely banning ‘coloured’ people from even
entering some areas. For example “Whites only
                                   telephone booth”
It was seen as unhygienic to mix
‘coloured’ with ‘whites’
This demonstrates the strong separations
which occurred in public places
‘Coloured’ people were seen as dirty
because of the darker colour of their skin
Therefore white people did not want to share
toilets, swimming pools or drinking
fountains with these people and
consequently the areas were strictly split off
The areas designated to white people were
often cleaner and taken care of, whereas the
other areas were neglected as they were
seen as less important
Black people were treated like
minorities or less important.
This is shown thought the fact hat
even drinking fountains were not
shared.
This raises questions as to
whether it is right to separate
people because of their skin
colour, so that they may not
share a fountain, as everyone is
still human.
The blatant segregation used
labels above fountains to state
who may drink from it.
It is clear that the “white”
fountain is well maintained
with shiny taps and a large
basin. The “coloured” basin is
simplistic, small and comes off
from the main supply of the
whites, meaning the “white”
fountain does not associate with
the water use leading tot he
smaller basin.
Segregation spilled into every aspect of
             the community, even public
      transport showed the splitting of
                           different races
As this picture shows the front of the
bus is occupied by white people which
implies that they felt superior and had
to be further forward. Black people were
sent to the back of the bus with no
                      priority of seating.
This was challenged by Rosa Parks
who refused to give up her seat for a
white man in 1955 which caused a lot of
               shock and controversy
The facial expressions of the white
people in this photo shows that they
were favoured in society and treated
better in comparison to the sadness and
loneliness of the black people who were
pushed out and treated like animals
