2. In simple terms, telling a computer to
"render" is like telling the computer to
"draw the information I've given it so
far". Projects, whether still or
animated, aren't complete until
they're rendered.
Rendering is the final front-end and
product of the 3D process. Generally
speaking, your 3D application is
rendered throughout the workflow.
The OpenGL wireframe or shaded
view of your model that you are
working with is a kind of renderer.

3. However, most "feedback-
driven" renders lack some very
important details, such as
reflections, shadows, and true
transparency. The most widely
used large renderers today are
phong, gouraud, raytracing,
radiosity, toon, and other
stylized renderers. Phong and
Gouraud shaders are among the
earliest renderers available and
are generally very fast rendering
processes.

4. In fact, they're so fast that
some applications, such as
3D applications, use gouraud
shading as a feedback
renderer; that is, they display
quickly enough to be
interactive. A major
drawback of these engines is
that they often use a
reduced form of rendering
transparency and never take
any refraction into account.

gouraud shaders display
light effects, but their
shadows do not (there are
some phong shaders that
are exceptions to this rule).
Some applications, such as
ElectricImage, use a very
fast form of phong shading
that calculates refraction,
shadows, and, with some
adjustments, reflection.

6. Ray tracing is by far the most
widely used rendering engine.
The theory behind ray tracing is
that the renderer creates
imaginary rays between objects
in the scene and the viewer (or
camera lens). This line is direct,
but can take long detours if it hits
objects that are considered
reflective. It's a great way to
display reflective objects,
refractive objects, and
transparent surfaces.
