Secondary Research Into My Target Audience
For my filmopening I have decided to do a ‘Zombie’ Genre. I will need to research the target
audiences that zombie films attract. I will be doing this using a range of secondary data to
help me decide on who my film should be aimed at e.g. age/gender/social class. Once I have
established this I can start more detailed planning for my film opening and by talking to
people in my target audience and find out their psychographics. This will overall ensure my
film opening is at a high quality and a success.
UK Film Council Post-
I have looked at secondary data from the UK film council post and I have used the
information and data to help pinpoint my target audience. However my genre that I have
chosen wasn’t in the UK film council post data, so I had to compromise and look at another
genre that similar (thriller) and use this data instead. First of all I looked at page 106 of the
UK film council post. This is a page showing data of ‘Types of film that the general public
typically enjoy watching’.
From this data I can clearly see that the most common social class of people who watch
thrillers is c2 (middle class. This then means that I should more than likely aim my video to
middle class people. You can also see from the data that out of males and females are most
dominant in enjoying thrillers with 60% of females over the age of 35 enjoy watching them
compared to only 57% men. From this you can see that there females are most common in
enjoying the thriller film genre. From the data I also looked at weather it makes a difference
if the audience has children or not as to weather they enjoy the thriller genre. I found that
it makes a slight difference weather the audience has a child or not as 59% of people who
watch thrillers don’t have children but 42% don’t. So I will have to keep this in mind when
aiming my film opening at my target audience.
I also looked at page 105 which was ‘Types of filmthat the general public typically enjoy
watching’
This data shows to me that 53% of people typically enjoy watching thrillers. This shows to
me that there is a wide range of people who enhoy to watch a thriller genre. As the thriller
genre is close to my genre of ‘Zombie Apocolypse’ I can use this data to find a target
audience for my film.
I also looked at data from page 116 of the UK film council page :
From the image above I can see that the thriller genre is very successful in what people class
their favourite genre to watch and it’s a popular genre with cinema audiences in the UK, this
then suggests that there is potentially a huge market for this mainstream genre. This means
I can aim my filmto a wide target audience.
From page 117 of the UK film council page I can see the types of films that the general
public consider their favourites and I can use this data to help me decide on what the target
audience of my film should be in order for it to be good!
From this data I can see that the thriller genre is considered a favourite and watched by
both by men and women who are mainly over the age of 35 and also who generally don’t
have children. There is no significant pattern in the social class who consider a thriller as
their favourite genre as all of the percentages are within 1% of each other.
Overall from the UK film council page I used the data to help establish who my target
audience should be. As I used a different genre to compromise for my one genre that isn’t
on here I have decided to firstly aimmy target audience at male and females under the age
of 35 who are middle class. This then brings a wide target audience and this is very useful as
I believe the ‘Zombie’ genre that I am doing is a mass market so it’s got to appeal to a lot of
people!
I also did some more secondary research into my genre (Zombie) to further establish my
target audience. I will do this by studying box office data and fan reviews to help identify the
scope and demographic of Zombie film fans.
Thenumbers.com-
From thenumbers.comIlookedatthe box office historyforthriller/suspense movies.Ididthis

Box Office Mojo-

WorldWar Z was a verypopularzombie filmfrom2013, this

genre that I am doing.Fromthe box office mojowebsiteit

IDMB-
From the IDMB website I can analyse
different films in the zombie genre. As you
can see from the image a zombie film
‘Shaun of the Dead’ has got a star rating of
8.0. From this I can see that it’s a successful
zombie film, and I know that a lot of people
clearly liked it. I can use this information to tell me that zombie films are usually very
successful and there is a target audience out there who enjoys watching zombie films.
I can also see from the IMDB the
budget, opening weekend and
gross profit made by films. I
looked at a zombie film (I am
Legend) and from the
information I can see that it had
a budget of $150 million! This is a massive budget so can tell you that they knew the film
was going to be a success. This is then backed up by the gross profit made by the film as
they made nearly $257 million which is a lot more than their budget so they made a profit.
This can also tell me that in the film world zombie films are successful and popular!
From all of this data I can see that the zombie genre is very successful worldwide. I can tell
this from the budget, the casting and the reviews of different zombie films. I can use this to
know that when I make my zombie film it will be a success and appeal to an audience.
