2. BIOGRAPHY
• Born in Brazil in 8th February 1944.
• Became interested in photography in 1970.

3. EARLY EDUCATION
• Attended the first part of secondary school in his hometown of Aimores.
• Moved to Victoria to complete his secondary education in 1962.
• Left for Sao Paulo where Sebestiao received a master in Economics.

4. STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Salgado's photography has often focused on the effects of hardship,
poverty and oppression on people of various cultures, and with the effects
of industrialization on the natural landscape. Inspired by the
photojournalism of Lewis Hine, W. Eugene Smith and Walker Evans,
Salgado has tackled subjects like famine, poverty and social inequality in
black-and-white photos that are unsparing yet often beautiful.

• Sebestiao travelled to Africa to document famine.

• Moved to Paris to begin his life as a photographer in 1973.
• Worked as freelancer.
• Joined Sigma photographic agency in 1974.
• Joined the Gamma photographic agency in 1975.
• Photographed Indians and peasants of Latin America during 1977.
• Left Gamma and joined Magnum photos in 1979.
• Salgado remained in Magnum photos for the next 15 years.

• Sebastiano Galgado worked on an 18 month project documenting the
African famine.
• He published two books during this time, Sahel: Man in Distress and
Sahel el fin del camino (the end of the road).

30. • Salgado is a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and an honorary member
of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in United States.
• He and his wife, Lélia, an architect and urban planner, were married in
1967. Together they founded the photographic agency Amazonas
Images to represent Salgado's work. They have also worked together on
the restoration of Brazilian rainforests, and they co-founded an
environmental education center called Institute Terra in 1998.
