Search Engine

A search engine is
a web-based tool
that enables users
to locate
information on the
World Wide Web.
Features of Search Engine
 It moves around the Web
collecting Web Pages to
include in its catalog or
database.
 It searches when an
user requests
information from a
search engine; not the
entire Web.
 Each search engine has
its own catalog or
database of collected
How Do Search Engine Work?
 Every search engine uses different complex
mathematical formulas to generate search
results.
 Search engine algorithms take the key elements
of a web page, including the page title, content
and keyword density, and come up with a
ranking for where to place the results on the
pages.
 Search engine’s algorithm is unique.
Types of search engines:
. Specialty search
engines
. Hybrid search
engines
. Meta search
engines
Specialty Search Engines
 This is a search engine that is focused on
one or two particular specialty search
engines or categories, for example
Yell.com, Yell uses categorise to make It
easier to find the information that is placed
into the site.
 Examples:
-Askjeeves
-Medhunt
Hybrid Search Engines
 A hybrid search engine (HSE) is a type of
computer search engine that uses
different types of data with or without
ontologies to produce the algorithmically
generated results based on web crawling.
 Exmples:
-Yahoo.com
-Google.com
Meta Search engine
A meta search engine (or aggregator) is a
search tool that uses another search engine's
data to produce their own results from the
Internet. Meta search engines take input from
a user and simultaneously send out queries to
third party search engines for results.
Examples:
-Metacrawler
-Dogpile
How Are These Tools Different
. A search engine type is determined by how
the information contained in its catalog or
database is collected
• The sites in the catalog or database of a
search directory or index are compiled by
humans; not an automated software program
 A web search engine is a software system that
is designed to search for information on
the World Wide Web. The search results are
generally presented in a line of results often
referred to as search engine results pages
(SERPs).
