However today this is more “Push than Pull” with more supply and interest from designers and educators than from NGO’s and social enterprises. In order to change that we designers need to both adapt our practices and our business models. In this perspective he shared learnings from his current personal transition into social innovation and made a case for social design not necessarily being better for society or the designer’s soul but rather serving as a new and better model for design, particularly service design.

From Big Data to big business! Nowadays, only 5% of the data generated in the cities is utilized for something it wasn’t created for. Using an underground trip card “only means” you are allowed to travel, we discard information that could let us optimize routes, lines, waiting times, etc. In 2025 billions of sensors will invade our cities trying to make our life easier, sensors in traffic lights, parks or streets. Can you imagine? At BBVA the future is now so we found an alternative approach to Big Data, based on people rather than sensors. This is the story of how we were able to transform a large number of financial transactions into actionable innovative services.

It has a mandate from the government with a clear vision “A society in which everyone can enjoy alcoholic drinks with due regards for health considerations and without harming themselves or others”. This means that 5 000 employees are selling alcohol from special shops and under Swedish alcohol law restrictions. During the biggest change of the company they went from the typical stateowned company that was not too popular to receive multiple rewards for “Best in Service”. Their journey has been amazing and was done in three years, the Swedish people support has never been so good. They choose to develop their service throughout leadership training with a clear intention on “becoming the best I can be”. Only to realize, that not only did the meaning of work change – even the value of life changed. Passionate leadership that involves and engage employees to become “the best they can” be was their key. How they did it? Mia inspired the audience sharing some key takeaways. How to Help Your Fellow Man Stay Healthy Together with Handisam, the Swedish Agency for Disability Policy Co-ordination, and three major Swedish companies, Doberman created a new type of first aid kit. Today, there is a compelling need for a kit that not only addresses physical health, but psychological health as well. Its goal is to prevent sick leave by erasing taboos around mental health issues in the workplace, demonstrating how colleagues, managers and whole companies need to establish a constructive environment together. Co-creation also played a large part in the project, with executives, employees and people who have experienced stress and burnout taking part. As of this conference, the project is being tested by 1000 people.

The Service Design Imperative by Nick Leon Service Design is the application of design practice to the other 80% of the economy. It demands new skills, tools and techniques, perhaps even a rethinking of what we mean by design itself. Designing product service systems and the business models that enable them, means crossing boundaries between design disciplines, business and technology. It means changing the processes and practices not only of designers but how firms innovate and organize themselves. This isn’t easy as we share different working practices and cultures, but, it’s essential, for service designers, if we are to collaborate or even lead innovation. Innovative service systems can create rich and integrated customer experiences – delivering real social and economic value, opportunities for self-expression, and bring meaning to peoples’ lives, as well as to the world we share. We live in extraordinary times, a perfect storm faces us; the environment and climate change, an ageing demographic, pressure on resources, rapid urbanization and issues of social and economic exclusion. These systemic issues need a systemic design response and that’s the role of service design if we are ready to take up that challenge and responsibility.

Chi Staff Research Scientist, Google Research (work done at [Xerox] PARC) Abstract: Despite the widespread adoption of social media internationally, little research has investigated the differences among users of different languages. Moreover, we know relatively little about how people reveal their location information. In this talk, I will outline our recent characterization studies on how users of differing geographical locations and languages use social media. First, on geographical location: We found that 34% of users did not provide real location information in Twitter, frequently incorporating fake locations or sarcastic comments that can fool traditional geographic information tools. We performed a simple machine learning experiment to determine whether we can identify a user’s location by only looking at what that user tweets. Second, on language, Examining users of the top 10 languages, we discovered cross-language differences in adoption of features such as URLs, hashtags, mentions, replies, and retweets. We discuss our work’s implications for research on large-scale social systems and design of cross-cultural communication tools. Homepage: edchi.net Speaker Bio: Ed H. Chi is a Staff Research Scientist at Google. Until recently, he was the Area Manager and a Principal Scientist at Palo Alto Research Center's Augmented Social Cognition Group. He led the group in understanding how Web2.0 and Social Computing systems help groups of people to remember, think and reason. Ed completed his three degrees (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.) in 6.5 years from University of Minnesota, and has been doing research on user interface software systems since 1993. He has been featured and quoted in the press, including the Economist, Time Magazine, LA Times, and the Associated Press. With 20 patents and over 90 research articles, his most well-known past project is the study of Information Scent --- understanding how users navigate and understand the Web and information environments. He also led a group of researchers at PARC to understand the underlying mechanisms in online social systems such as Wikipedia and social tagging sites. He has also worked on information visualization, computational molecular biology, ubicomp, and recommendation/search engines, and has won awards for both teaching and research. In his spare time, Ed is an avid Taekwondo martial artist, photographer, and snowboarder.
